What really makes the game? Physics Environment!

Other than the fact I'm waiting for shoulder surgery, nothing. All is gravy.

Good then. 👍 (Not good that you have a shoulder issue of course)

Anyway, I might have been a bit unclear before, hope that this last post made some sense. ;)

After playing this game for 9 months now, racing at the ring during nightime is still one of the most glorious experiences of gaming ever.

Bravo PD bravo for getting the gameplay right

I'll explain. :)

While GT5 doesn't model things properly like the tyre model (no temperatures, pressure, different segments, etc.), has a simplified suspension model (e.g. simplified springs/dampers, no caster, no bump stop, no positive camber), no brake physics (e.g. modeled fade/temperatures), dumbed down online physics, exaggerated draft, etc. etc. it still manages to capture the real-life feel of the cars. E.g. when I get into a 350Z, it pretty much feels like the one I owned in real life. Same applies to other cars I have driven and/or owned.

There are other games out there that model all the things I mentioned, but still don't manage to capture the real-life feel of the car. :

Exactly what I'm saying!

Another problem in GT5 physics (that could be a combination of other issues such as too much simplified suspension dynamics, tire physics, or else) in addition to the other ones mentioned is that cars, especially tall ones, in GT5 are extremely difficult to roll over compared to RL and when they do (or better, try to), in addition of appearing to move in slow motion as soon as wheels leave the ground, they seem to be subject to some kind of "invisible force" which causes them to fall again on their wheels most of the time (except rare cases).

In RL it's scaringly easy to lift off wheels on one side of the car or rolling over completely with stupid maneuvers, especially on ecoboxes after fitting performance summer tires (as many do in an attempt to improve grip). In GT5 it's essentially impossible to roll over a car on comfort or even sports (= semi-slick) tires, unless it's purposely ran at odd angles against steep slopes or bumps (for example on Trial Mountain or a custom course maker track).

I can't fathom what PD will pull off when PS4 comes around.

And that's my fear. Imagine what people were anticipating with GT5 and the PS3. For most it's a tremendous letdown.

One of my biggest hopes is something that will allow periphreal vision. Turn your head and see the car that's over your shoulder!

The realistic physics is what gives gt5 and even gt4 it's identity. The only thing that could be made better is the tires but it's not that huge of an issue. I don't care I can't paint ridiculous things all over my car or ad body kits because they aren't a part of driving and that's what makes gt. There is no other game where you can compare handling characteristics to real cars. I've never driven a corvette z06 but I know it's tail happy. What other game can you accurately compare lap times to real life? The physics are gt5's strongest asset and as long as they stay cutting edge I dont care what kaz does I'll keep buying.

Yes, Forza 4 looks fantastic, but the Gran Turismo series is and has always been the best when it comes to vehicle physics. I doubt if Forza 4 will feel.....as solid, as realistic as GT5. The cars (mostly) behave like they do in real life and that's what I love about the series.

i dont know about forza since i dont own an xbox but GT5 absolutely kills on physics. I mean cars actually drive in the game similarly to ones i have driven in real life.

whatever engine PD is using, it is simply voodoo

I agree with the OP. The physical reaction of the car to the environment makes the game very enjoyable.

I don't care about the flaws or the damage. Look closely at anything and you can find flaws.

This series has kept my interest since the first version and I look forward to GT6.

Yeah this is an area I would love to see improved upon. Your comment reminded me of the video (which you found for us) that came out before release of a japanese girl who rolled an old fiat 500 going fairly slow, https://www.gtplanet.net/first-gameplay-video-of-car-rollover-in-gran-turismo-5/ looks like the video is down sorry.

Plus not being able to roll a car online or even jump without being forced to the ground unaturally fast is really dissapointing, to have an option to roll cars online would be incredible.
