As someone with both dead and near dead PS2s, the obvious reason to get another one is because the current one doesn't work.
I think it really depends on your habits. If you spend a lot of time on the go, a PSP would probably be better. If not, you probably already have a PS2 game library, so you might as well get another one to make use of it or just wait/save for the PS3.
OR, you could do as I'm planning to: wait for the PS3, and then buy someone's old PS2 for wicked-cheap.

If you're gonna get a portable for gaming RIGHT NOW, get a DS.

WAIT for '06 for a PSP. Trust me. By that time, Ps3 will be out, so you can then decide whether to get a psp or a ps3, with the later also have full backwards-compatability, as you already know.

The games for PSP right now are "teh s_uck", so just be as wise as possible with your purchase.

I got GTA Liberty City Stories and its great, I also have Everybodys Golf (AKA Hot shots golf) that I got for free from Sony and Its great fun.

I have been thinking of getting Lumines as everybody swears by it but it seems to me too basic to pay full price for.
