I've never spent any time on the Granturismoworld site, because there's nothing of value there. However, after seeing a reference on another forum to a Kazunori Yamauchi interview on it, I looked at it again. Here's the link to the fluffy, feel-good "interview":

Click on ">>Gran Turismo's creator speaks!"

There is nothing in the so-called interview that refers to "secrets of a good race" as mentioned under the link. Okay, fine, but there's something else there, and it ain't good:

"What part of Gran Turismo makes you most proud?"

"What we cherish most in Gran Turismo are the driving physics, what we call the 'Real Driving Simulator'. To enjoy it precisely, we think the licence test is the most suitable format. I love the licence test mode best over all the other game modes of Gran Turismo in fact. That’s because it's the best way to experience what we want you to experience - the fun of driving and the driving simulation physics."

Oh, my. Oh, no. Houston, we have a problem.

Any questions about why it is so hard to find a competitive race event in GT4? Any doubts about why the racing itself is the weakest part of what is otherwise a truly remarkable program? The license tests are what really does it for the game's creator. He just doesn't care that much about the actual racing, does he?

This does not bode well for future versions of the game...

Well that explains quite a lot really. we'll still all buy GT5 though, so I guess Kaz wins whether he makes it better or not.

That is absolutely hilarious. The one thing the vast majority of Gran Tourismo players despise the most about the game is the one thing it's creator is most proud of. I personally liked the tests a lot more this time around. The full lap tests, and pace lap tests. The Missions, to me, are an extension of the license tests.

OOPS!

I wholly agree with Zardoz that the racing is not competitive enough and the AI needs a lot of work.
However at the weekend i had my first 4 player LAN battle on GT4 and have to say that it is possibly the ultimate way to play this game. Racing becomes ultra competitive (assuming of course that your mates are any good). If only there was a way to use the cars from your own garage in LAN mode...

You can us youre oen cars in LAN in the Us and PAL versions.

Err, at the risk of sounding, um, stupid, what do i have in the UK? We tried and there was no way to select tuned cars from my garage, just standard ones from the manufacturer.

i think UK has PAL. In the NTSC version. there are a 1 and 2 at the top of the screen to load memory card cars.

wait a moment, for me the racing is just a means to and end.

let me explain...

In GT racing is just a formality for me to get the cars i want and the cash to do them up and drive around a track, im not that bothered about the racing being hard, as this isn't what its about for me getting a car and trying to drive it to its full potential and getting a fast lap time is where its at for me.

Anyway the game is a driving simulator not a racing simulator

and its not even the best driving simulator at that. :indiff: Tons of cars where the only way to progress is beating other cars... seems like competition with other cars should be considered one of the main focuses. i mean... if they werent gonna go all out with the physics they could have at least made the AI more competitive.

It seems that a lot of you don't agree with Kaz, and call me crazy, but I also enjoyed the license tests... getting gold in particular. I do agree though, it is sad that it's hard to find races with such a challenging need for driving skill as the license tests, etc, but they're possible. That's probably why I liked the mission hall too, good races without having to mess around with which car gives good competition to what other car.. its already set up for you

he doesnt mention physics being improved greatly in gt5, or what he would have liked to do with the physics, as if they are just fine. or the dumb AI. I like the license tests... its just i dont get where his head is. (Money!!??)

your a man after my own heart there sprite. imo GT4 feels more like an RPG than a racing game. with previous versions of the game, racing was a bigger part, but now, there are so many other things that you can do besides just race cars.
personally, i prefer to collect cars, upgrade them, and then drive in time trials. no matter how good the AI gets with future versions of gran turismo, the toughest opponent you will ever face will be yourself.

zardoz, if you read all the interviews with KY, you would understand that gran tursimo is not about winning races, its about driving cars. its about learing to master the machine you love, and pushing it to the limits.
KY constantly talks about the art of driving, he rarely talks about the art of racing. what does that tell you? anyway, if he beefed up the ai, then you would have similar threads to this but filled with bleeding hearts bemoaning the fact that the game is too hard! there are tough races in gt4, you just gotta go and look for them.

racing cars sells gran turismo games, but i think that if KY could release a driving game that involved no racing at all, he would; but for obvious reasons, he never will.

its too easy to drive. if you've ever seem pro drivers doing their thing, they are doing much more corrective steering and throttle controlling. Things are just too easy in gt4 on the limits. Plus u cant do donuts like you should be able to .

In gt5, the dfp should physicly lock differently depending on the the car.

Zaggin's post kind of brought out a good point of "people are gonna complain the races are too tough". This kinda reminds me of need for speed, how they have the fakest races in the world when you set it on hard, how the computer miraculously catches up to you when you could have sworn the same car thats right on your tail just crashed 3 seconds ago. Thank goodness GT4 isn't like that. Once you gain a lead, it's gonna stay, as it would in real life, even if the competition isn't as fierce as you want it to be.

How is your grammar ?
Actually, his grammar is correct. Physics is a singular word, even though it has an "s" at the end. Just like mathematics. Don't be nitpicking stupid things like that if you don't even have it right to begin with

Edit: No offense man, sorry if i sounded semi-harsh, my grammar sucks, but I know a thing or two about rules. To everyone else, what happened to your talking ability? This conversation was flowing like waterfalls a little while ago, I didn't ruin the tone or anything did I?
Edit the edit: It was the only thing i could think of.. I suppose "river" would have been better

First of all, try turning off all the aids (including traction control) if you think it's too easy to drive. Also, in GT there aren't nearly as many track variables like dirt or oil on the track. Take the F1 for a drive around Trial Mountain or Nurburgring with no aids on and see if you still think driving in the game is too easy. As for a driving game without racing, I would actually love to have that. Where you could take as many real cars as you want and just drive them around streets and to the track and have everything simulated beautifully. I like driving around in real life, why wouldn't I in a game? Unfortunately, I think I'm in the minority. Oh well, GT is close enough, I guess.
As for the grammar, "how is the physics not good" is not proper grammar unless referring to "physics" as a noun, for instance if you were talking about a physics class or physics book. If it were "how is the physics simulation not good", that would be better, but you still have the "not good" in there. No offence to whoever wrote it as I've seen a lot worse, but it's still not correct.

I would hope that with the increase in competition in the console driving/racing sim market and the impending release of the next gen consoles that GT5 will offer a whole raft of new and innovative features. I think that they know full well that racing is what generates volume sales while driving keeps the fanatics (in the nicest sense of the word) satisfied. I am confident [:nervous:] that GT5 will completely change the way racing games are thought of.

The new consoles will both/all need launch titles and I would guess they are looking at GT5 and Foroza to do that for them. They can't afford to dick about with this one, which ever one gets it right will be a big $ winner.

thats it, the game is sooooo faulted that i am taking it back and getting a refund. I will be hand writing a letter to the manager of PD for putting out such shoddy work! :grumpy:
how dare they!

I am also writing to the australian distributor because they allowed this lousy game inthe country in the first place. :ouch:

(incase you missed it the above is sarcasm... just play the game peeps and enjoy it for what it is, entertainment) :)

Well no wonder I like this game so much. Not so much for the liscense tests, but free run (or whatever it's called) is my favorite part. Like a very small number of you have said, the racing is a means to an end. I dont want to be tied down to a slow car to complete a series. I like it just the way it is. it's like you start at the ground level and you have to break out. The races are set at a certain difficulty determined by the cars competing in them, and it dosent change. (if you take your taurus to taledega does gordon have to trade his ride in for something tamer so you have a chance?) and for the first time the liscences required to enter the races are an acurate reflection of its difficulty. The A and B liscense races consist of street cars. And for any race requireing an IA or IB liscense you can expect to see a field of race cars. The races are there to give you cars, and money to buy more cars. I take whatever car I please to whatever race I please, Run my self ragged with pure speed, and the only buzzkill is when I catch up and have to work my way through the field again. Once I'm back in open air, the fun starts all over again.

I just love the driving in the game. I love to take a daihatsu midget to the test course and drive my own endurance time trial, just to enjoy the great driving physics of the game. Just wonderful, such an exciting game it is. It's such a challenge to stay on track. Why race when you can enjoy the beautiful trees while driving past them.

Doh!

No seriously, I hope they spend most of the time perfecting the racing in the next game.

Compare the physics of any GT game to any other racing game out there, and tell me that GT hasn't done the best job of simulating racing physics. Everything out there feels like an arcade game, including Forza.
Also, what the linsence tests do is force you to be good enough for all the races, whether the races are that hard or not, you have to prove you can race in them. Its almost like an initiation or something, and I feel it should stay.
Just my 2 cents though. 👍

yes nothing like cruising the ring in a drop top with nothing but the sound of the whale song ambient music playing on the sound track and light breeze whistling past....
and the 200kmh wind trying to rip your hair out!

quite meditative really.
