Sniffs
oh, we didn't get actuall mitsubishi labeled cars in the US untill 89. before that, we had a clone of Mitsu's "cyborg" in the US for Dodge/Plymouth as Colt ( forget the regular car's name)
What?! How can you reference the Starion then say that?!
Mitsubishi's first US model year was 1983, when they debuted five vehicles - Montero, Pickup, Tredia, Cordia, and Starion.
Montero was sold until 2005; now it's called Endeavor.
Pickup's name was changed in 1988 to Mighty Max, which was cancelled in 1996 after the federal government threatened to bring huge fines against Mitsubishi for not complying with any federally-mandated safety guidelines (forget airbags - Mighty Maxes didn't have OBD or three-point seat belts either). A new Mitsubishi pickup, the Raider, is set to debut in 2006 based on the Dodge Dakota.
Tredia from 1983 to 1988 at which point it was replaced by Galant (in 1989) which continues to this day in its fourth (and best) generation.
Cordia was also sold from 1983 to 1988 and was replaced in 1989 by the Mirage, whose name was changed in 2002 to Lancer. Technically the vehicle therefore continues today, but Tredia was strictly a 3-door hatchback whereas there are no Lancer hatches.
Starion had a troubled history - its last year was 1989 and of course in 1991 the follow-up 3000GT came out, only to die in 1999.
Original Mitsubishis were indeed badged as Chryslers - I wrote a really long history of Mitsubishi and Chrysler 1982-present somewhere - but Mitsubishi broke into the market in 1983. Even then though they had a lot of failed ventures with Chrysler - I still consider the Mitsubishi Montero-sourced Dodge Raider the second-worst SUV ever built.
