GT4 takes my vote on this one... And my reasoning is this...

Gran Turismo 4 in 2005 was a heaps better game than Gran Turismo 5 is in 2011.

I'd say that this is a fairly accurate assessment actually. If this (GT5) were the first installment of the series, it would be mind blowing. But it's the 5th installment. Granted, I think PD was caught a little off guard, not with the performance increase of the PS3's, but with the advent of High Definition. I'm not sure they thought it was going to take off as quickly as it did, hence why only so many cars are complete. If people can't recognize that, that's fine, but I'd also like to add that the 3D was a total surprise to them. I wish that PD would've left 3D out as I think it changed the way they had to approach everything so late in the development of the game, and this left them scrambling.

I chose GT3 because it was the last one that focused on fun.
And it had Special Stage Route 11, one of the best
made-up GT tracks ever.

GT5 wins it for me. Interior view + Ferrari, Lambo etc. puts it ahead of GT4 for me. Even though people complain about the AI, it's still better than GT4. And what's the point of 400+ events if, esentially, its the same thing over and over again, aginst the slow(er) AI?

(gt4)
not really... try b spec producer race (opel speedster) or the really hard special events ..its never the same like grinding :sly:

Being able to race with friends >>>> anything else.

Agreed. A reduced 'career' mode in no way depreciates the added online content of GT5 for me.

I have owned/played 1-5 and all things considered in terms of how I like my automotive gaming, GT5, warts and all, gets my vote.

GT5 is the best because relative to past GTs has:
1) Interior view magnificently designed (even in 200 cars only)
2) Online racing with lobbys
3) Trading with friends
4) Best physics ever in consoles
5) Can get even better with patches, addons, etc.

Only great drawback was small number of events, until seasonal events came up! others hopefully will get fixed. We also wait for save game in endurance races.

I'd say GT4. I've been playing since GT1.
- I have the most hours into this one by far.
- Nurburgring!
- My 3 different versions of my old CRX!
- *cough* you can change the wheels on ALL of the cars *cough*
- *cough*

Although GT1 holds a special place in my heart... you can't tell me you don't get shivers at 1:24!

Everybody is afraid of change and evolution. GT5 is the best, has some flaws may be (it's totally subjective) but it's the new-bold-thing.... by now.

Evolution? lol most of the cars are from GT4. All GT5 is is GT4 with a bit of polish & the internet & it should be called GT4 Epilogue lol

If by change and evolution you mean making a game worst than its predecessor and the competition then sure.

GT1, because if it wasn't for that first game, you wouldn't have any of the rest. If it was a failure, then most likely more would not been produced.

Excellent intro....It still makes me smile and funnily enough at the point you mention with the blast of a car blitzing off!!

ontopic...I voted GT3, even tho it was a bit light on content, it was just awesome at the time.

GT1 - blew me away...still got it and played it earlier this year for a laugh. looks so awful!

GT2 - Loved it, loved the content but lacked something....souless. Can't find my copy :(

GT3 - Blew me away with the next gen (at the time)PS2 visuals. Also my first console game played with a wheel, which blew me away. Played it a bit earlier this year.

GT4 - Loved it, but hated the understeer and the really confusing and crap menu (seriously PD are AWFUL at menus now!). Events made up for any problems. Also played it a bit earlier this year.

GT5 - Love it, but so disappointing. It's like watching you favourite football team win.....but by the skin of their teeth and with many players underperforming. I want to see my team play well and win with style...and that's how i wanted GT5 to be...and it failed completely.

In terms of car handling GT5 is miles ahead of GT4. In GT4 you could power-oversteer front wheel drive cars, for instance. GT4 was a step backwards from GT3 in that regard.

GT4 had polish, and some tracks I miss, but I wouldn't swap the GT5 physics for anything from GT4.

As a game GT4 wins, however GT5 has much better driving physics. And therefore for me the latter wins, because that's most important for me.

I think GT5 is really fun, and combined with the runaway graphics (standards notwithstanding) and physics,so that's what I voted for.

But my childhood GT2 days were also incredibly fun, even though that game was nowhere near as polished. I will fondly remember GT2 for as long as I live!👍

As much as I enjoy GT5, I'm with the poster who mentioned GT4 was more impressive back in the day than GT5 is now. It just felt like a more robust and polished game overall, so I think it gets my vote.

GT5 suprisingly leads with 1 vote above GT4.
My vote went to GT2 not because I think it's the best - but because of all the good times I've spent with that game when I was a kid, ah the nostalgia, priceless.

This is largely related to new technology however. I'm sure that if the GT series wasn't conceived in the dial up days, the genre would've had internet sooner.

The physics engine in GT5 as I've said repeatedly now is the only thing that really keeps me with GT5.

Although we can say technically GT5 is superior to all the past GT games it feels unfinished and needs more polish when it comes to game play. That feeling of it being unfinished even though it's taken over 5 yrs to make because you have standard cars and not all premiums. The standard cars actually had the option of changing their wheels in GT4 but not GT5 is another reason. As far as game play GT4 was a pleasure to play by earning points and winning cars without the feeling of griding to win cars and credits in GT5. GT5p had some good points that can't be found in GT5 I don't know why PD decided to remove the A.I. adjustment and replace it with the 3 settings in arcade mode.

I still voted for GT5 to be the best but still needs a lot of work. Hope GT6 is much more refined when it comes out. We deserve better, don't you think? Maybe an option of "Full Simulation" to make it have full damage with regards to physics not necessarily the graphics part where you see the cars blowup in thousands of peices but at least mechanical damage were you totally break down when you crash at over 150mph or do a head on collision even at 50 mph.

Damage has always been a touchy issue imo. Many have touted it as one of the greatest omissions from the GT series that so boldly claims itself as a "simulator". From someone who uses simulators almost daily, this is certainly not a simulator. It's nowhere near close either, but it IS as close as you can get on a PS3... though that doesn't say much really.

I've never really cared about damage previously, though once GT5 announced that it would be present, I really began to embrace the concept. I think this game would be infinitely more challenging (and likely more fun, for me at least) if it had a realistic damage model. If you purchased a vehicle from the dealership new (say an enzo) for $1M and then took it into a race, whilst racing you bumped here and there to get through some turns faster etc. This damage should stay both visually and physically (?) with the model. So if you bang up the rear quarter, perhaps the suspension becomes damaged in a way that causes the rear to track differently. In other words... the same way that a real car would become damaged. Instead of cleaning the model up however after each race... it should remain crumpled from race to race until it is repaired in the repair shop.

This is sort of what I was expecting in GT5. It would also be fanTASTIC if you could do engine swaps or some other extreme car modification that requires relatively minimal external modeling. As I would love to do insane things such as shoveling viper engines into fiats etc. But this is a topic for another thread.

Have played the series as far back as GT2... GT5 gets my vote despite the issues with game design, and being overhyped. It's the driving physics that wins it for me, especially when driving on the Nurburgring. Sometimes after a hard shift at work, I just want to settle down and have a good blast on the 'ring (also really like driving on Suzuka) with my own BGM playing some of my favourite rock tracks. Also really enjoying the photomode.

GT3 is probably my second favourite... I was another who felt the improved graphics on the PS2 was a wow factor back then, and as has been pointed out before the fun element of this game stood out. I still remember an epic battle I had in a BMW 3 series vs a Toyota Altezza for the lead of a race on the Seattle track that pretty much lasted the whole race. It was also the first GT game that I was able to use a wheel as well.
