I decided to buy GT4 from Play-Asia.com But the only thing is im not sure which one to get. One says GT4 and the other two say GT4 Japanese Lang, and GT4 Chinese Lang, Will anyone work with Swap Magic?

None of them will work with Swap Magic, as the game uses a dual-layer disc, which the SM system can't handle.

I personally got the chinese version because I have a friend that knows some chinese. Beyond that, it doesn't really matter which version you get.

P.S. I ordered from Play-Asia myself, and got confused by the three versions they offered. There's the one "NTSC-J" version for almost $70, then there's the asia/japanese and asia/chinese both for $60. I was wondering what the difference was between the $70 one and the $60 ones...

So For sure it wont work on swap magic? Do you have a mod chip?

Yeah whats the difference between NTSC-J and Japanese/Asia??

I ordered the NTSC-J from Lik-Sang. Should be here day after New Years day. Cant wait to sober up for it.

Right, the game won't work with swap magic.

um so that's like a REAL BIG...OH NOES!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111@@@one

I was afraid this was true, and I believe you. Do you know specifically why?

I was looking stuff up about it to confirm that it wouldn't work, before ordering a Japanese PS2, and I saw stuff about ToC size...

I think it has to do with how exactly the SM system works. The initial boot sequence is carried out by the SM disc to bypass the region code, then you tell it to load the game data when you hit X. But since the SM disc is only a single layer, the PS2 doesn't know what to do when you put in a disc with twice as much data...something about the table of contents on the SM disc not being able to tell the PS2 where the other 4 gigs of data are. Or something. I don't know much about how data structures work with this sort of thing, but that's what I gathered.

I think the Japanese version (the one that is more expensive) is originated from Japan and thus it is more expensive (more like a collectable item). On the other hand, the Asian versions (both Japanese and Chinese) are cheaper because they are meant to be targeted in other areas excluding Japan. Hence, they are a bit cheaper. That's what I think anyway.

It is more expensive if you buy it IN Japan due to some exchange rate.

I bought a Perfect Grade Gundam (GP-01FB) when it was just release last year in early November for less than $200 Cdn. I got it from Hong Kong.

If I got it from Japan. It is 20,000 Yen. which is less than $200 US.

Sven - will the new Swap Magic Disc 3.3 (I think the DVD loader is 2.1) work with Dual layer DVDs, i.e. GT4 NTSC-J?

I was doing some research on the 3.3 as well. There are disclaimers that it might not* (read: won't) work with the DVD-9s. :indiff:

I just ordered a Magic 3.1 modchip for like 25 bucks shipped. It supports the new DVD-9 discs and multi-disk games. I already have 80 bucks invested in the game and shipping. ..whats another 25? Oh well, I had an american express giftcard with 25 bucks on it. :dopey:

Oh yea? Well I just caved and ordered the racing pack! Crap, $269.00, I must be crazy. Thanks Sven for the heads up, it didn't even dawn on me that the dual layer wouldn't work with my swap magic disks. That would have been a HUGE disappointment!
I'm sure eventually there will be a patch to make it work by copying it on to 2 discs, but sounds like a pain and I don't want to wait for someone to figure it out, 'cause I sure can't.
I plan on getting Enthusia from Japan too when that comes out in March so hopefully that's on dual layer too to help justify my embarrassing purchase. Oh well, at least I'll have a collector's item. :dopey:

I won't need any adapters for the power supply, will I? Sven?

well , to stay on the "legal" side of the line, since you are buying the game and it's DVD 9, i've read tutorials about how to flatten the images for use with HDadvance on a PS2 HDD.

i'm just hoping that GT4 can be flattened and will work with my HDadvance. it works on other multi disk games, so i hope gt4 works! :)

*note creating a backup of a game is legal if you own the disc (i'm new to forum so i don't know if this is a touchy subject)

cheers :)

Creating a backup DVD of the game is also next to impossible, as I understand it. I don't believe burnable dual-layer DVD±R/W's can hold the full 9.4GB (burnable discs always have slightly less capacity than original pressed discs).

Me, I'm just getting the U.S. version. No Japanese/Chinese text to worry about, no ungodly shipping costs, no swap-disc/modchip required. Not only will I have a version I can read and play without difficulty, I'll get it for a hell of a lot cheaper than the folks that import it. :)

Yea, yea, yea. We've heard it before. Nothing wrong with learning a new language though, and I'll be playing next week on my 6 days off!

Word. I'm getting my wisdom teeth out on the 6th. I'll be worthless for 3 days. Lortabs + 3 days of nothing to do+ GT4= teh win. Furthermore, In my situation, it's better to get it now instead of waiting til it comes out mid-semester over here...that would be a ripe time for grade burnination. I'll be able to get my life-killing play time outta the way before school starts back up.

So you're just paying more because it originates from Japan? is this right?

Yeah, I think that's correct!

That sounds good with those numerous advantages, but there's one major drawback: you'll get it the hell of a lot later than the others will. On the other hand: if you can't use it, why get it now? :dunce:

so basically dems 4 pro should handel duallayer other region dvd?

Well my PAL PS2 with a Messiah 2 chip works with Xenosaga US NTSC, which is a DVD-9 game. So i'm sure a DMS 4 pro equiped one should cope fine.

I should also be getting both JP and Asian versions.

I´ve ordered all 3 versions, you can buy at www.play-asia.com. If they have a difference i will post here, when the game is released.
Wow some of you guys cant get enough, all three versions, and then i guess the english language one when that comes out.

Well, you can test all three, then choose the best one and sell the others for pretty much money I guess.

Believe me, I understand the importance to Hardcore fans getting the game early, but getting all 3 versions at once

I agree, but... Doh!! Why can't GT4 get to us first?? Why ain't it on the X-box and published by MS?? Doesn't anyone love us? :guilty: 👎

Unless the new Swap Magic DVD is a dual-layered disc, I don't think it will work any differently. I could be wrong though.

You might need a power supply adapter for an imported system, but I don't know much about that.
