Certain parts of Canada are cheap - Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba, once you get out of the larger cities. Vancouver, Victoria, and the larger cities on any water (West or East Coast, Great Lakes, St. Lawrence) are expensive. Housing in Victoria has been rising rapidly for the past six years or so - An average home won't be less than $400,000. New builds add a couple hundred thousand to that.
Gas, being on an island, is typically the most expensive in Canada - We're usually 15 to 20 cents per litre above the national average.
Basically... Any desireable place to live in will be expensive. Anywhere that's in the middle of nowhere, won't be.
