After today, I have decided to screw Christmas and get a PS3 even earlier. My 2nd Xbox 360 died today at 11 months old, and I will not be playing this whole, "I've been through 4-5-6 billion damn consoles" stuff I always happen to read on the official Xbox forums. I will probably still get a new one sent in just for the Xbox 360 games I have, but for now, my seven year old PS2 will have to last.

Thus, I need to know which GB version is the one worthy pursuing as well as what add-ons (I have a G25 already) and games are worth buying besides GT5:P.

Sony, as far as I can see it, is simply the better console maker, and I think after 2 and half years, it's time to return to the company I originally started playing with. This isn't a rant (well, the first part is), but I seriously want to know what in the Sony market is worth getting.

My Favs Games
MotorStorm - probley pick it up for £20 but its alot of fun
Call of duty 4
Unreal Tournament 3
Orange box - for Team Fortress 2
GT5:P
Resistance Fall Of Man - not Cod4 but a good game

that should keep you happy for a few months

and a rumble pad

Well, basically it depends if you want to have Backwards Compatibility incase your PS2 ever goes out or you don't wanna clutter up your entertainment center.

If you don't care about BC, then the 40GB is a great deal at $399 (it'll still play PS1 games though), it may not look as nice as the other models because instead of chrome it's grey.

If you'd like BC, then the 60 or the 80 is the way to go, the 60 has better BC because it uses the EE & GS chips. But the 80 is only slightly worse, and the biggest mainstream titles (that I know of and/or have) that don't work are Jak & Daxter, some of the Rachet & Clank games, and GT4, although the latter is only a few minor problems with the replays where cars will jump around, and a small square in the upper left hand corner will make some weird colors.

I personally have the 80, and love it to death and probably wouldn't trade it for a 60 either, as I'm using 60GB of space as it is.

Also, MGS4, CoD4, and Rock Band (if you already have them for your 360, get them anyways :P) would be my pick.

From,
Chris.

Games i would buy again are: Grand theft auto 4, Formula One (althought now i maybe wouldnt anymore since its from 2006!), Uncharted is very good! and MGS4 and if you like shooters ofcourse CoD4 but it could not keep me interested but im more racing gamer.

Games i wouldnt buy again: CoD4 thoughts its a good game and burnout paradise.

:) Also i dont know where you live, but maybe its worth waiting for dualshock 3 if its not on sale yet?

I have no desire to replay GTA4 again on a new console to be honest. That's why I'm going to get this X360 replaced just so I can continue to do so.

I am in the US though, so when is the DS3 expected to arrive?

I suggest:
  • Unreal Tournament 3
  • COD4 (If you don't already have it for Xbox)
  • Rock Band 2 (Out later this year)
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Skate 2 (Should be out soon enough)

Your PS3 should come with a DS3 now, if i'm not mistaken. Also look for deals at different retailers; they often bundle stuff together.

You could get a USB keyboard and mouse, if you don't already use those for your computer, to play some games like Unreal Tournament 3 and also to make internet browsing a little easier.

Also be sure to check if you have a USB flashdrive that is compatible with the PS3, so you can transfer music, movies, etc. I usually use my 30gb iPod. :)

Enjoy your purchase! :D

Its already on sale in the US :) lucky people haha :(

You can always import one if they don't sell them where you live.

I have an extra Logitech G15 keyboard. Might that work or does the PS3 use a different sort of port?

And does the PS3 have any cables that will allow it to be played on a PC Monitor?

I would first recommend that you check out Kent's recent thread, as it basically asked the same questions and received lots of excellent responses/suggestions:

In addition to what I said in that thread, as far as "add-on" hardware, I would strongly recommend you get the PS Eye... it's great piece of kit, that lots of games support, and some games who are designed specifically for it, and physically put you in the game, such that you not only see yourself in the game, but that you don't use any controllers of any type... just your own body movements. 👍

The camera is also very well used for video conferencing on the PS3 with up to six friends at once. 👍

It also has an excellent multiple array microphone which you can use for chatting instead of a USB or Bluetooth mic.

The fact that it's so cheap (about $35) doesn't hurt either. 👍

Is that regular USB? Then yes.

Yes you can play on a monitor, as long as your graphics card has the right port and you get the right cable. Doesn't come in the box.

colors.

.

Get a bigger hardrive for 50 froghides:rolleyes: I think GRID is a blast, especially if your into driving games. I bought a Japanese copy of GT5P for $20 shipped and honestly if I'd have paid $40 and discovered it had so little on it I'd have been pissed. Warhawk can give you hours of head to head combat against your fellow gamers too. I've had some peopel get their panties in a wad because I'll grab an enemies jet and start hunting them but hey welcome to the war, put down the purse and pick up a gun:sly::mischievous:

When I had the dough to buy one I instantly hit egay and found a 60gigger. I wanted the flawless BC of the EE chip. I also bought a brandnew WD Scorpio 120 gig HDD for $50 shipped. I bought it from another middle aged adult like myself who had babied it but also included the bluetooth remote, Motor Storm, a coule bluerays and some PS2 games for $550+ $20 for shipping. I would do it again in a heart beat if I had to do it all over again.

You need to buy a seperate HDMI > DVI cable, and the monitor has to be HDCP compliant, then you can use it. Just have to sort the sound out also since DVI does not carry the sound signal.

Oh yeah, for sound i use the S-Video on my monitor. Pretty ghetto setup

Ah, good. My PC monitor makes everything look better than my TV in the game room, so I'm happy to know that.

Thanks for all the information, guys. 👍

I wish I could run through my monitor especially on Warhawk. I just got a wide screen 19" Dell LCD monitor for the PC. Its justthat when I want to play my wife will be using the computer so thats a it of a conflict.

Ouch, that sucks. Second one? speaking of which, did Mista X's die yet? Am I the only one left still on their first 360? although it's half dead because of the freezing...

Anyway, MGS4 IS A MUST!

The g15 keyboard should work, since i have the g11 and that works just fine.
Ofcourse the G buttons and the lcd display aren't going to work, but that can be expected.

I have my ps3 hooked up to my monitor with a HDMI to DVI cable and the sound from the composite cables. (Logitech X-540).

Thanks for the info, Dust. 👍

BTW, are the 80Gb still for sale? I haven't seen any anywhere along with the 60Gb. The only one I've managed to see is the 40Gb in a bundle for $500.

My brother and I are still on our first. I think it was bought somewhere in late 2006. Only had very minor problems so far.

The 80GBs should still be on sale. It's the replacement for the 60GB one. You'll probably have to look around. Only the 40GB is available straight from amazon. The 40GB isn't bad if you don't care about backwards compatibility, 2 extra USB ports and the memory card reader.

As for games I would recommend Ratchet & Clank if you are into those types of games.

I don't think HDCP is involved when the connection is DVI, but I could be wrong.

It is, or more specifically it can be.

In other words, while all HDMI inputs are by specification HDCP compliant, the same is not the case with DVI. Some are, and some are not.

It is optional only, decided on by the manufacturer of that display whether or not they want to use a DVI input that is HDCP compliant.

The good news is that a lot of HD content currently available does not use HDCP, so even if you use a DVI input on a display without HDCP compliance you may bery well not have any prblems, but better safe then sorry right?
