I'm sure that this topic has been brought up tons of times, but I'm just not excited about damage. Here's the thing really, I'm not a huge car enthusiast, more amateur really, but regardless, I'd have a hard time dealing with the fact that my dream car is damaged, even if it is in the game. From my perspective, although it is a driving simulator, isn't Gran Turismo about appreciating the cars? Well it is for me anyways.

I could see why people would want damage; it would make online play better, as I'm sure that less people would punt, and it would also make the game more realistic.

But still, seeing a Ferrari F430 totalled would break my heart. Still, this is simply my opinion.

What are your thoughts?

EDIT: Darn, messed up on the thread title. >_<

I think initially I was slightly opposed to the idea, but having seen some of the online antics, I'd have to say a little damage may just make that crazy Clio driver (you know who you are! All 8 of you!) consider not making a lawnmower of my WRX ;)

Having said that, I think when private rooms are introduced online, or even offline racing versus the AI, there will probably be a toggle feature for damage to allow you to play as you enjoy it the most.

All the best

This is pretty easy to solve - just make damage an option.....just like every other game that has damage. Then you have made both sides happy.

Damage is needed, as it is pretty much a standard in racing sims nowadays.

That being said, I far more looking forward to see what new features they may add to the online experience. Hopefully support for racing leagues and such...

I am not concerned about it, but I am very interested in how PD finally approaches it and how far PD can take it. So far I am not really happy how most other games and sims have handled it.

I would love mechanical damage though, watching all these people damage their engines from downshifting too early (very common in Youtube videos) would be halarious.

I'm looking forward to having damage.
If i'm getting really frustrated with a race i want to be able to just smash my car into a million pieces.
Now driving into a wall just doesn't give the same satisfaction.

I couldn't care less about damage.

The point of the game is to drive the car, not crash it. >.>

i'd like to see damage then you have to use your cash to repair your car and maybe even pay towards other players damage if it was deemed your fault, that way you could end up spending more on repairs than you could win, maybe make people a lot more cautious when racing

Damage is needed for online, but even that won't stop the punters. That being said, it will be a lot more fun to watch someone try to punt you, go ghost, then total their car in a wall. . .then the game ends because they were hosting.

Can't wait for it, gonna be awesome. The one thing GT has been lacking for ten years is damage. I do hear that PD are intent on dumbing down the damage feature because they understand that it will be no fun if it's too hardcore.

Having said that, they will have an off/on feature for newbs, but I'm wondering if they'll have a 'standard and pro' damage system as well?

Could you imagine the arguments online about who was at fault! If GT itself decided who was at fault it would be even worse, just look at how often you get a time penalty because someone rams you from behind or the side.

It is a good idea in theory but I can't imagine it working in practice. A option to optionally give money to another player may be a good idea for honest players that feel bad or want to make up for their mistake, though some will still get pissy and demand it.

Jos, I think you are right. I don't think damage will stop the punters one bit and may in fact encourage them. I also don't think PD can make the damage discretionary with apportionment of fault etc. You only need to look at the current penalty system. Wish I had a dollar for every collision penalty I have had after being rammed in the rear or side.

That being said, damage will be another facet of the game which will add to the challenge. It will alter the way we play to some degree and will add a another point of controversy for us fanatics to debate endlessly. :)

damage is for those that just want to go around and destroy, not those of us that want to take driving out of GT and be able to apply it in real life.

I love seeing wrecked Ferraris:lol: TVRs look nice when damaged, too!
damage will make online racing a destruction derby for sure.
Not if a proper penalty system is implemented, like the one who causes the crash pays it :) Thats hard to do yeah, but not impossible for a famous software company like PD- maybe they could ask Hideo for how to make a game on PS3 act intelligent ?

Sadly, with most games these days any feature i tend to think "ok how is this gonna get exploited online" unfortunately online breeds alot of people who like to manipulate things instead of build skill because they cant handle getting beaten. While i think damage could eliminate some ridiculous time penalties, i also think it could be used by malicious players to headhunt people who they feel wronged them. I think private rooms and perhaps a lobby system could really seperate serious players from simply childish players more effectively than a sort of punishment system with damage. However I have alot of faith in PD and if they implement damage it will be done right.

Collision is good idea online, but offline the AI is not improved enough
to make it work, looking at GT5P problems with the penalty system,
a collision penalty caused by AI car last 4 seconds plus/minus, but a
collision in GT5 could last until you limp to the pits. (This being caused by mistakes that real life professional drivers don't make). That being said I still want it, the AI is my biggest problem. The AI still seams to not know
your on the track coming into a turn, the AI still wants to get back
into it's racing line.

To me, damage isn't all that important, all I hope for is the driving expierience and gameplay to make up for it. Damage will only make my friends quit playing GT with me.

I've played some online races today and changed my opinion on this issue: damage is more important than I thought. It's true that the game is about driving correctly, with realistic physics on the car behaviour, not about crashing it. However, online mode is a battlefield, those guys must think this is a first-person-shooter. I can't get clean opposition and I'm always getting punted, so I can't trust other players anymore, I can't move as I would if it was a real race because I have to stay safe. Damage will persuade players to take care of their (and others') cars during races.

I thought the damage modelling in TOCA 3 (or Race Driver3 or V8 Supercars3 or whatever else it was called) was done quite well, not only visually (for a PS2) , but the way it cumulatively built up in its effect on key components. I recall it was also able to be set to about 3 different levels from weak to realistic.

I'm with those who are more interested in seeing just how PD handle all the issues surrounding damage, than thinking its lack is really spoiling the game at the moment.

i'm all for damage. would be funny to have yourself retired from a race if you crashed etc, although not funny if someone totals you out the race. in clean racing that we normally have it will only be minor scratches.

Here's my favorite answer so far. Not just damage..but the ability to pay to have things repaired. That's what i want.

...Damage will persuade players to take care of their (and others') cars during races.
Will it though?

Even if PD does the system right (ie: it takes a lot of money and time to repair said damage, or the car is just a total loss) what do you really have to lose by totalling your car?

God knows there will always be a cash-cow race that will allow you to simply buy another in a couple of minutes.

Dear Sainted Murphy... why? I do enough of that already with my real cars...

It will certainly put some punters off, however, some may not be discouraged if they have finished the game as they can easily make the money back pretty easily.

^ Exactly.

Even if you have a total loss, after a certain point in the game, attaining another car is not a big deal.

I guess Im in the minority but I could care less about damage. To me its all about enjoying the driving experience. I just foresee me getting PO'ed bc someone ran into me and messing up my car, and the rest of my race.

I an not really that concerned about damage. But I really hope it will make it on. Always adds new level of game play and simulation.
