I'm looking for a True 5.1/7.1 Headset, I will use it primarily with the PS3 and GT5 but I'll probably watch the occasional movie and might try some 5.1 Music.

If you have one or have trued a few especially with GT5 can you please tell me what model you have and your thoughts.

At the moment I have been considering trying the Tritton Pro AX but these are difficult and expensive to get in Australia and I am wondering what other good alternatives there are.

Just something to think about, that may change your mind (well, not really, but its just food for though). I bought Tritton AX720's (optical audio, simulated 5.1) and I use them in Call of Duty and can pinpoint perfectly. If you race in the cockpit view, prepared to be annoyed to all ends. In say a right hand drive car, your left ear will hear the engine A LOT more so than the right. Very bothersome IMO. I've been racing mostly on roof view now though, which it isn't a problem then.

do headsets correctly reproduce the "5.1 feeling" if the ear monitors are so close to each other. i mean, isn't it hard to discern the sounds in the rear from those coming from the front?

It depends on the headset, but if it's at least average quality you should be able to tell what direction the sound is coming from.

I know that the AX Pros have 4 in each ear cup. 3 30mm drivers and one 40mm (subwoofer) I guess the way they are positioned. I haven't had any complaints with my 1 driver with simulated 5.1

I haven't set a price limit because I want something good quality and the reason I'm asking about True 5.1 and not Dolby Headphone simulated surround such as in the A40 is because I have listened to a lot of Dolby Headphone demos and a lot of binaural clips and they do not work for me. I can hear stuff going behind me and beside me, I can hear stuff inside my head but the image in front of me never appears in front of me, most of the time it appears either above me or in the middle of my head.

It's possible that no surround headphone will work for me but I'm not willing to spend that amount of money blindly on something like the A40's when the Dolby Headphone demo's have never worked for me properly with any headphones I have tried.

Another vote for the Triton AX720s. I originally purchased them for MW2 and they performed great. I could hear 360* with pinpoint accuracy. I went from 1.65 K/D to 2.25 K/D. Yes, they helped me that much. And no, I'm not a camper.

They've been working great for GT5 as well. From a cockpit view you can hear which side the exhaust is on and where the engine is mounted. It definately creates a more immersive experience, especially when combined with a wheel.

Think I paid $120 at Best Buy. I've had them for over a year and no issues. If you don't want the simulated, get the AX720 Pros.

A40s and AX720s work differently I think, I could be mixing them up with something else. You actually set the sound output on your PS3 do Optical Dolby 5.1 I thought the Astros were just for 2 channel sound. I could be entirely wrong though.

And yeah, I've had mine since black ops came out (I hate that game so much, MW2 is so much better in comparison) and I payed 120. The AX Pros as mentioned, are $170-180 and are true 5.1

The Turtle Beach headphones unfortunately rely on the same Dolby Headphone Technology as the Astro A40's but the A40's are considered better.

For those that don't know, True 5.1 usually refers to headphones that incorporate multiple drivers, in the case of the Trittons they use 4 per side which translates into 5.1 because you require the centre channel in each ear and the sub in each ear. I don't want to get into the whole multiple driver 5.1 headphones are a scam debate because clearly those that argue about this haven't tried them from the debates I have seen.

The A40's use a Technology called Dolby Headphone Technology, this is a technology that takes a 5.1 or 7.1 sound source and mixes it down to a stereo mix in a way that when you play it through headphones you get the same illusion of 5.1 or 7.1 sound, this works for many people but unfortunately not everyone and I unfortunately seem to be one of the people it doesn't work for.

These videos are demos of Dolby Headphone technology the last is a binaural demo that most of you have probably heard, you must listen to these through headphones, if these work for you chances are you would love something like the A40's, unfortunately these don't work for me and I can only sometimes detect the correct direction, in real life I have excellent directional hearing.

I have tritton ax pro's and for GT5 they are amazing. I can almost pin point the exactly location of cars on tracks, and they are really comfortable. But for $180 dollars they are a bit expensive.

I know some time has passed since the last post in this thread, but here is my take on the Triton AX Pros.

I purchased a set last week for late night gaming when I can't use my 5.1 setup in my gameroom for noise reasons. I almost have to admit that I may end up using the headphones more than the 5.1 receiver setup. They are that good in my opinion. The directional sound it very accurate and clear. Though some have said they are a little heavy on bass, I find them a little lacking in that area, but I am kind of a basshead. The main reason I like them so much is that I can hear everything in the game without having to crank the volume too high which is not the case with my traditional 5.1 speaker setup. I would highly recommend them for gaming and movie watching.

I do.

The Tritton AX PROs. An excellent head set. I've had 'em for a lil' over a year and they are still going strong.

They work unbelievably good in MW2 and only so so in Black Ops(due only to the games sound issues, blame Treyarch for that.) and they work great in GT5, but they are pricey, at $180usd, they are not cheap but they are that pricey for a reason.

Although, they are really designed for 1st person shooters, not race car games, but still, going through a tunnel in a RM 69' Camaro with pedal through the floor IS breath taking. 👍
