The best thing about Sage's avatars is that he'll think nothing of spending 4 hours making a perfectly rendered little bas-relief sign, with smooth drop shadows, nicely rounded corners, and a theme-inspired decoration, even though all it says is he'll be out of town for two days.

I use to spend a decent amount of time making avatars for forums... just here, well its harder due to file size limits. Which is a good thing, because people abuse larger limits far to often elsewhere.

That, and I just have too much to work on now To spend much time in Photoshop. That, and my computer is so slow at home it can't really handle it anyhow.

As for other people... I can't really think of other avatars people use. It's something I just overlook most of the time.

If there's one guy on this site who has managed to be a "jerk" it would have to be me.
With that in mind, I apologize for giving you a hard time when you first met me. Hopefully by now I've managed to smooth that over but just in case... Sorry!
In any case, Jet's way cooler than I am and far more awesome in the ways of being a space bounty hunter.

Nothing is cooler in an avatar than making people think of the person behind the avatar and not what's in the avatar. 👍

I remember liking that long ago (now that I've seen a reminder).

I wonder how many others there are that have just faded away in my mind (going un-appreciated)?

One style of avatar that comes to my mind is from all those great WRS mods. Boom for sure, CFM maybe, flat-out I'm pretty sure, and even weary... Those guys all used various Gauge Gifs with WRS written onto the gauge. Boom also did some great work with that on lexus gauges... I think M spec did the same with some of his BMW work. 👍
All those gif style guages were real cool. 👍
Oh, and that mod with the B17 bomber. 👍

Yeah, a few are starting to come back to me now... Let me see if I can go find a few of these that I've been talking about.
