It's sad that I'd get so personal in a situation like this, but with that said...
The avatar means something to me.
Jet is a character who has been forced to adopt a stern persona with little emotion. He's a character that represents everything I've slowly become in life.
On the other hand, whiney EVA boy represents something just as important in my life. For that though, I will only say this- you must watch the series and understand it to appreciate what Shinji represents in my life.
Likewise, Gendo also represents part of my life. The only problem with Gendo is that I am unhappy with what it represents... It's true that Gendo represents part of me, the part that has "sinned" but more importantly, the part that regrets and wishes to correct those sins.
Each avatar I pick represents something more than just a picture in my life. I don't pick avatars because they look good or because they are trendy. I choose the avatar I have because I hope it speaks to someone on the GTP and tells them more about me than I would ever be willing to disclose on the public forum.
With Jet, Shinji, and Gendo the case is the same although they each represent something different.
