Who is buying a HiDef TV this year or next mainly for the next gen consoles, i will mainly be buying a HiDef TV for better TV and for Next Gen Consoles.

Hopefully we'll be able to afford a HDTV sometime next year. I don't think I'll jump the PS3 bandwagon immediatly after it comes out, so I'll get one mostly for the HD broadcasts from the Soccer World Championship and my HD-DVDs...

I got my HD Ready tv last week. A Samsung SP46L6HX - cost around £1500 but online can be as cheap as £1100.

Not all HD Ready tv's need to be pricey. 27" LCD's can be as low as £600. Just make sure it has the HD Ready logo as not all tv's are truly HD.
Also consider what type of inputs you need. HD Ready tv's should have at least 3 types (not including Scart or S-Video) which include HDMI (PS3) Component (Xbox 360) and VGA (PC).
Sky will start HD next year..no idea how much it will cost. And the BBC should have HD by 2010..perhaps earlier.
However, you may want to wait until the next-next generation tv's turn up. They will have 1080p. They are already available in the US and Japan.

I got an HDTV like 3 years ago. It's a Sony 36" CRT, it's got 1366x768 native resolution I believe, and supports 720p and 1080i. I've also got HDTV programming from my cable company, it's free to the people who buy the HiDef cable receiver since it's only about 8 channels. Having MovieCentral (HBO) and Sportsnet and all the good shows in 1080i hi-def is awesome. The games I have on Xbox that are 720p (two of them) also look very good too.

Looking to buy this Hi Def TV which supports HDMI aswell, and it is the Sharp LC-32P50E 32" LCD TV.

Found I can buy this for £800, would even sell my current TV. For this aswell as my Xbox before I get a Xbox 360 on 2nd Dec 05. But may just leave to buy it next year like in Feb 06 or March 06 w00t.

Its Response Time is 12m sec, which is not bad, sounds like i be getting a bargin. When I order it oh yay oh yay.

I so want to order one now, but i got Christmas coming one. But when i finally get it i tell you lot, if my Big bro and Dad gets jelous of it.

If only i could afford one, in a few years maybe. I saw one in dixon that looked amazing though, if only i had a spare £1800

Mmm the ones i've seen in Dixons and Currys look pretty awesome. That's where i spend most of my time (obviously :P).

There was a Sagem one in Currys that looked pretty cool. I think they had that hooked up to a PC for the HD.

There's a huge one in the front entrance of dixons too. Usually playing some guy skiing. From the high street, it looks even more awesome 👍

The nearest i have is my Samsung 710MP, which is an LCD monitor/TV. The TV tuner and scart sockets it has are pretty bad though - if i'm watching a DVD, i stick it on my laptop and plug it in, rather than watch it through my ps2.

So, how's the HiDef technology in televisions these days? Is it like in a generation where one has to worry less about problems?

I see those big Hi-Def TV's in Dixons, they must have a lot of fun. Before they open to test out the TV's.

Somethings to look out for are HDCP compliance, 1080p capability and others.

Not all high-def connections, and that includes HDMI, are HDCP compliant. Right now, a lot of people are having a very difficult time with watching high-def satellite movies in high-def because HDCP is preventing their HDCP complaint devices from communicating with each other properly. HDCP is a flawed product, and it creates a lot of problems, but there's nothing we can do about it. You just gotta make sure the products you buy can properly communicate with each other.

Next, 1080p. This is becoming the standard quality for all high-def media, including future games, movie discs and over-the-air TV broadcasts. Make sure your HDTV is actually capable of displaying at this resolution. Most HDTVs that list "1080p" don't actually display at that resolution level.

Something else to look out for is 1008p support of the HDMI inputs. Yes, Mitsubishi, and others, have made true 1080p HDTV sets that wont except a 1080p image via the HDMI connection. Why? I have no idea, but it's true. So, make sure you HDTV set has a 1080p compliant HDMI input connection.

The Cell chips are coming to HDTV sets soon. I'd wait for them. In fact, I am.

Unfortunately here in the UK HD ready TV's have only just started becoming commonplace and that's just 720p and 1080i resolutions too. As for 1080p...I think there are a few out around now but they're very pricey.
As there is no Hi Def material to watch on tv's in the UK at the moment (except what you can download legitamately from the internet) there's not too much call for it. But Satellite will start broadcasting next year along with trial runs from the BBC. But to be honest I'm really only interested in Hi Def games and DVD's.

Solid Lifters
Lots of info.
Damn, there's a lot of stuff to look for. Is there a good reason to wait for a HD television that will come with Cell rather then one without, other then just having the chip and the name it comes with it?

I bought mine quite some time ago, I wish I would have held out a little longer so I could get a better one with 1080p..

Already have one. Bought it 4 months ago. It doesn't support 1080p but it does all the resolutions below.
I'll post pics in a minute.

Edited my post, put the wrong link in. You'll find the specifications in there.

The Pioneer PDP plasmas are very good. One of, if not the first to come with HDMI when it came out a few years back. A mate of mine is getting one cheap next year (the git).
Still, not sure if I'd want to play games on a plasma. Things like screen burn and image retention bother me.
Bulb life is a prob for DLP's and LCD's can have dead pixels. Nothings perfect but generally the more you pay the better you get.

Currently playing SCII on my 46"DLP at 525p and it looks gorgeous! Can't wait for the next-gen consoles to arrive!

Pioneer claim it is the very first to have that. The picture quality from DVD's is amazing.

Also, I think it's one of (or is) the first plasma's not to have fan's built into it. That is another reason why my Dad didn't go for others, he didn't really want to hear fans running during his movies, even if it is slightly heard.

Very nice! When I bought my HDTV for GT4, ironically it was when my PS2 started to collect dust and my Xbox started to shine. I was shocked at the amount of Xbox games that supported 480p vs PS2's 480p+ games.

I will be buying a new TV probably early next year, I've been looking around not too deeply though yet because I'm not bothered until next year, then the living room telly can go into our ain bedroom and the one in the bedroom can go into the spare room, and the one in the spare room can go into the attick.

Whats the cheapest hidef tv at 28 inches? Remember when widescreen first came out and they were a couple thousand pounds and now you can pick them up for peanuts. Well i decided to skip those and get a hidef when theyre cheap unless something even better comes out and the process will carry on.

Except in the UK where Microsoft kindly left out progressive scan! Thanks Microsoft! 👍
I'm being sarcastic.
Here the only people with prog scan Xbox's are those that have had them modded which I believe is now illegal in the UK! So it's strange there are prog scan games on the PS2 in the UK but not on the more "advanced" Xbox. Pffft.
Still both the PAL 360 and Pal PS3 will have 720p & 1080i.

A cheap 28" LCD can be as little as £600 maybe cheaper. link
Or link for US prices.
But a lot depends on make and quality. many of the cheap ones are by companies I've never heard of.

Maybe in a year or two I shall get one. All those that have flatscreen hi defs is just how much better is the picture compared to a normal TV? Do you need a TV channel provider that supports hidef?

G.T glad you said how good HDMI is, I am so looking forward to getting my HiDef TV with HDMI.
