I was wondering, what is the point of playing Gran Turismo if you dont use a steering wheel? I was curious if anybody present in this forum uses a dualshock 3 or sixaxis controller for Gran Turismo.

I sadly am stuck with a sixaxis at the moment. However, I'm saving up for a G25.

That's like asking "What's the point of trying to set fast times with an automatic transmission or driving aids?" Some people prefer driving their own way and if they're satisfied with their gaming experience, great.

Just because you get an extra sense of realism from playing the game with a wheel doesn't necessarily mean that something is taken away from those of us who use a controller. That's one of the reasons the game appeals to so many, IMO.

i play with a controller because i dont have an adequate setup for a steering wheel. (i have a dfp.)

i project i will get my tax return before the release of gt5p and i will then upgrade to the g25 and either buy a cockpit or the materials to make one.

I've been using the controller, and i feel i'm actually pretty good with it....however, i do plan on buying a G25 soon, i just have other financial stuff to take care of first, but no rush, i've got the japanese version of GT5p, and awaiting the US version.

I still use the Dual Shock Controller, but I really do need to upgrade to a wheel as after a bit of experience they can land you much better times .

well this game is a driving simulator..!!!!so you dont simulate driving by using a litle joystick and 2 buttons....!!!!sorry,this game should be played with wheel only ,otherwise go race an arcade game or so where left/right steering is just only left/right steering and nothing else!!!!!......but ofcourse everybody should do whatever they fancy....

I used to use a controller AT until Christmas this year. And have to say that after the learning curve of getting used to using a wheel, because although I drive IRL playing GT with a wheel felt very alien to me after using the controller for so long

The overall gaming experience is better and although there is still room for improvement My lap times have improved.

Bit of contradicting yourself there, aren't you?

As for the actual question, I am and will always stay, a button basher. Don't feel like putting a table, desk or other construction in front of my tv just to bolt a wheel on to it...

I'd agree.

After owning a DFP for years, before it croaked, yes wheels are far more immersive. But they are also quite constrained in how they can be used.

For example, i had to unpack, setup, plug in and constantly readjust the wheel and pedals after every race due to them moving around and pack it all up again at the end of the session. I don't currently have the space to build the setup that i want.

For others, GT is not the only game they play and they're not the only person using the console so it's just not practical.

I totally agree with Zs comment at the start of the thread. Proof being the fact that i regularly thrash the pants off talented friends playing with wheels on GT4 with my trusty DS2.

Like many women have said (not to me!)....

It's not all about what you've got, but what you do with it! ;) :p

Sometimes I'm just lazy to build steering wheel set in front of my TV and playing GT in basic physics mode w/ 6axis on my sofa

One or two things wrong in this, depending on your experience with the controller. What is certain is that if you really master the controller the wheel doesn't make much of a difference in the lap times. Some of the best players in the world use the controller. And about the wheel giving much better times, after "a bit of experience" is wrong if you're good with the controller. I was good enough with it to complete all GT games (GT4 being the last one) with everything winnable won but my first days, even weeks, with a wheel were horrible. It took closer to two months of daily playing to reach the same level because I really had got the controller playing down.

The teaching of the story: a steering wheel is not the magic thing that makes you a GT master in one day. Unless you're pretty much hopeless with the controller you won't be shaving seconds off on your first runs. It's entirely possible that you won't be shaving them off ever.

Greycap, I just feel things in my G25 before they happen on the screen. Catching the skid is much easier then.

True, I have the G25 now myself too so you're definitely right on that but having seen some scarily fast DS2 runs there's no doubt about some people being able to do just what they want with the DS2. The wheel gives feel and immersion but it doesn't give actual speed when compared to skilled use of the DS2.

come to think about it, I wonder if time trials should include filters like controller/wheel.

imo, playing with a wheel definitely makes the driver feels more 'busy', be it simple up/down paddle-shifting or engaging into a much more immerse simulation like clutching in, up/down shift, clutch out etc. i reckon when all the actions come into play, the driver needs to concentrate more to obtain a good timing...well, at least for myself :)

No room for practical G25 implentation for me :(

Doesn't bother me none. I grew up "racing" with a controller and I'll probably continue to do so for a long, long while :)

I am Strongly considering a G25, epecially as my BIrthday is only a few weeks away so I could get one for free/very cheap...

However, I only have a computer desk to mount it on which is made from thick glass, I used the 360 wheel on it and it was fine although it was a horrid wheel IMO.

Secondly my only experience with a wheel was the 360 wireless one with Forza 2, it felt awful as all the road cars had very little feel and of course its stupidly easy to lock the brakes on Forza. The only car I could drive with the 360 wheel was the le mans racers purley because they had lots of grip and dowforce to keep them planted whereas all other road cars gave no warning of when they reached their grip limits.

So can anyone compare the 360 wheel and Forza 2 with the G25 on prologue? this will be the difference between getting a wheel or not.

Also will the FFB motors shatter my desk!?

If someone just make a list of G25 owners?
I can't.:indiff:

When I bought GT2, 3 and 4 I Used a controller. About two years back or so, I bought a DFP for my GT4, change my experience and my thoughts about GT4. Then abut year later, year ago, I bought the G25, both for PS3 and PC games. Now that GT5P came out in Japan, its a really good wheel to use. The experiance is just as almost as riding a real car :)

<G25 user here, put me on that list :P

i play with a controller. i've used a few different wheels before (friends not mine) and i've never liked the way they feel. seemed too mechanical and doesnt feel any more real to me.

if i want that much realism i'd just hit up the local autox and have my fun there.

GT is designed well for use with a controller, however since having bought the g25, it seems funny using buttons to control a car.
I would advise everybody to save up for a wheel - it really is worth it, ecspecially with the new physics.

The great thing about a realistic wheel like the g25, is that you have an idea of how much car control you have in reality. eg: catching a sudden drift requires cat-like reactions( Those who have played gt5p with a g25 would understand) whereas to catch the same drift with the controller is pretty easy.
The wheel although trickier in certain situations definately makes you feel heroic after successfully catching a drift!:sly:

I've always used the controller in the past, only when i got prologue in Jan did i decide to get a wheel, did'nt take long before i was matching or even improving my controller times but by no means slaughtering them.

The level of control on steering, throttle and brake you get from a wheel/pedals cannot be matched with a controller imo, if looking for a big jump in lap times then you may well end up disappointed, depends how good you are with the controller, if looking for more immersion and general feeling for whats going on then a wheels the way to go as long as it's practical to do so.

I'm finding it a far more enjoyable and rewarding experience using a wheel :).

I'm back to my sixaxis :(

My g25 is ****ed up somehow (and I didn't do anything) I was away for the weekend, didn't touch the wheel at all, was working properly when i left and when i came back plugged the usb in, no calibration so basically the wheel doesn't work but the shift and paddles work :(

Am I missing something here? (I unplugged, plugged back everything, checked evertyhing... wheel's not working anymore :()

I think this post about sums it up.

Performance wise there's little in it. It depends more on your skill at GT altogether.

I know that it the level of immersion of pedals wouldn't be matched with this, but the remodelled L2/R2 triggers on the SIXAXIS and DS3 have a good degree of travel and the accelerator/brake can be mapped to them, allowing a finer degree of control to both inputs.

I changed to this control setup on GTHD and have found it far easier to balance the car on the throttle mid corner than i did by changing the pressure i put through the X button (remember DS2, SIXAXIS and DS3 all feature pressure sensitive buttons that allowed the throttle to be held at a constant RPM with a steady enough hand).

The only drawback with this is if you choose to shift gear with L1/R1 that it strains your hands during long runs. I didn't have time to try mapping shifting to the right stick though, so that might be the answer!

I'll test it over easter when GT5P arrives and let people know

Alba, i'm sorry to hear about your G25. Perhaps you could get talking to Goo and see if he has any knowledge of such probems?!

I use a controller and always have done for GT... no reason I just haven't bought a wheel and don't really want to..

Ever plug it in to the PC.. a start up disc came with it,,, I know you dont need it for PS3, but See if it works on the PC.. might help.

it doesn't work on the pc either, i tried (and i already had the drivers installed)

Make a poll to see the controller to wheel ratio.

Weird. That's exactly what happened to my G25.

¿Solution? Call Logitech to get a new wheel. I did it and got my new wheel after 4 days of wait.

I'm gonna use a wheel in about 2 years, when i'm 16, but for now i'll be using my favorite control.

well thanks for the input, champ. unfortunately, from what i can tell so far, it's not quite a sim. far as i can tell it's still a video game with decent physics.

and you do know that the joysticks do have a range for applying different amounts of throttle/brake pressure and steering, right? they're not on/off switches. it's just harder. and probably controls the car better than people (i'm sure there's more than a few) who just mash the gas on their wheel and slam on the brakes every corner.

just out of curiosity, do you think using anything other than a G25 is acceptable? do you put the shifter on the left for cars with right hand drive? do you adjust your seat position for different cars? i mean, if you want to be completely realistic, you are not going be using the same seating positions for a corvette as you would an sti. of course, if you were being completely realistic, you wouldn't be using a G25 either, considering the shifter offers very un-lifelike shifting feel, the pedals are way too close together, don't offer different resistance on different cars, doesn't have controls for blinkers, head light OR windshield wipers. need i go on?

it's a video game.
