Why do people use X as gas, D pad for steering in gt5?

I use L3 for steering, but still use X and [] for gas and brake, even though I can't get the level of throttle and brake control I want, because I use R2 and L2 (with index fingers) for gear changes.

What are people who use the trigger buttons using to change gear?

I have always preferred the sticks since GT3, but I use L2 and R2 for brake/accelreate in other racing games. However I recently badly bruised my right thumb in a MTB off so I have gone back to L2 and R2.

For all the bad things about GT5, at least be thankful we have the choice and go with what you feel best most comfortable with.

I also remember the days prior to analogue sticks and six axis. Started out with GT1 which back then really was so ahead of its game that I think is the reason so many whine about GT5 like they do...its hard to replicate what GT1 did back then... people expect so much these days.

I only briefly touched on the rest of the series from GT1 up until now. The real world took over my life and consoles became not so important as they once were. (Im 41 by the way :) )

Personally I use either the arrow pad or the left joystick for steering depending on the track. And use the x and [] for acceleration and brake. Must admit I have not tried the triggers and keep thinking I should but...never have! lol

I cant get on with using the right analogue for acceleration/brake because I always seem to push it left or right too much and find that messes up the top speed or braking potential.

I have done all the licences now...admittedly the majority of which are at bronze. Struggled with one of the special ones...at Suzuka I think it was but the rest I have managed eventually. The Rally special events though (The higher lvl ones) and the Lotus Elise TGTT have evaded me so far and im sure I could do better if I stopped being so stubborn and 'old school' :)

I would love to get a wheel...but then I would want a seat as well and the two reasons I havent yet are 1) Can I really justify several hundred pounds just to get Golds and 2) If I sit anywhere but on the settee my dogs think its free for all playtime and I know will pester me to death!

Maybe one day I will get with the future so to speak but at the moment Im managing the old fashioned way!

I seem to be the only one using sticks :(

I like sticks, my PS1 controller came with sticks, so I've grown used to them, I'm not into faffing around with L2 and R2 for acceleration and brake either >_>

Yeah I'm old school and I'm use to the x for gas, I do use the left analog stick now for steering tho lol.

I too use X / Square and the Arrows , But i am of the "If it is not broke don't mend it" brigade.Tried using the L2/R2 and it felt like "If it's not broke, then mend it until it is". So went back to the tried tested and assured method ! But i have progressed to a wheel .. Although i still find the Licences easier with a controller , i think it is just what one gets use to. But racing times do improve with a wheel once you get use to it.
Started GT from series 1 and have always played GT no other racing games compared IMO.. I am too old now to remember how old i was when i first started.

I have a lot of sympathy for those who are unable or unwilling to change. When GT3 came out I tried hard to adjust to the shiny new analogue stick but just couldn't get the hang of it, although I did adjust to the pressure sensitive buttons very happily. A work colleague laughed at me for days when he found out I was using the d-pad, until we got chance to race each other

I'd probably still be driving that way if not for Forza 2/3. I was forced to adapt and I found that my driving really benefited from it - I was certainly better at Forza, and now at GT5, than I ever was at the earlier GT games.

GT has changed a lot. The PS1 iterations were designed expressly for digital control pads, and the way inputs were interpreted to allow smooth driving was very clever in my opinion. The PS2 games were designed for analogue controllers but accommodated digital inputs acceptably. GT5, while not as bad as GT5P, is clearly designed for a wheel and accommodates other analogue controllers very well, but doesn't have the same variable rate of decay on input levels that earlier versions had - I'm very glad I made the switch away from that.

I use Square and X for as long as I can remember... I have the DFGT wheel but haven't got anything to mount it on yet!

I am in the same situation, tried mounting it on a coffee table, it's more like wrestling then driving, needed sturdy and cheap setting for the wheel.

My friends are using the L2/R2 setting, even I have added the trigger thing onto those buttons, I am still feeling more comfortable using X & [].

I think some ppl use X and [] for shift up/down, is it like this in Forza's setting? (X/A)

Damn, I must be one of the only ones to use R3 for Throttle/Brake, lol.

Since NFS Shift i've used the L2 R2 buttons for acceleration and braking because when i switched back to GT5 Prologue i found i could drive faster than using X and Square. I've always used the left analogue stick for steering.

Before getting a wheel, I had used the sticks to steer and throttle / brake, in GT2, 3, and part of 4. It reminded me of the days I raced RC cars with those big, boxy dual-stick radios.

I use the right stick for gas, L2 for brakes and R1 and R2 for gears - I moved from the face buttons, to L2/R2 and now to my current set-up. Each change gained me even more speed.

Exactly like me. :) R1 is shift up and R2 is shift down?

Analog stick > R2/L2 > [], X etc.
The analog stick gives the best control for steering as well as throttle. L2 for brake as its the best button assignment that allows to to control brake pressure to a certain degree as well as brake and accelerate at the same time when necessary.

So for the people who use L2/R2 for brake and gas, what do you use to shift? X and square?

I've always steered with L3, and I use X and square for gas and brake, but I shift with L2/R2.

And yes the face buttons are pressure sensitive but it's hard :P

Dang, I feel out numbered! It definitely seems like more people would use a more modern set up like triggers and stick. To the people asking, my setup is:

L2/R2: Brake/Gas
[]/O as shifting
left analog as steering
right analog as look left and right.

I use d-pad steering, x/square for gas/brake. I actually trained myself to use the left analog stick for steering in GT4, but I switched back to x/square early on in GT5 because it felt better to me for some reason.

I think I'd like to train myself to use the R1/R2 triggers for gas/brakes and go back to the left stick for steering. If I do that, it seems x/square are most popular for shifting. Which is the "standard" for upshifting and which for downshifting?

Analog stick > R2/L2 > [], X etc.

Yup, R1 is shift up and R2 is shift down. Using the stick for throttle makes wet races so much easier as you can modulate it so much more smoothly than the other set ups.

L3/R3 > L2/R2

the only l2/r2 vantage i see is that you can control brake and gas pedals at the same time, but they are both tooo sensitive! if you press 50% of the button, it'll brake 20% then if you press 80% its already braking 100%

this is my settings:
l3/r3 brake and gas
l2 - brake
r2 - look behind
l1/r1 - change gears

so I can gas and brake at the same time

The X pad buttons are pressure sensitive. It's easier to flip your thumb to the upper left in a hurry? I'm old school, just how I've always done it.

exactly my friend. My thumbs have been big enough to cover both x and square since gt1. I do use the analog stick to steer but find with some practice its quite easy to control the prressure on x.

i play GT5 the same way i play GT1. why? im just used to it? and im used to it. and i love it. i have way more control over the car with it than with the analog stick. i have a wheel, but u know, it gets tiring after a few hours of endurance race..... plus, im not good at drifting so i tend to spin out all the time. so left and right + x and square ! :D

I still use x and square for throttle and break. Just used to it I guess. No, I don't use the d-pad anymore for steering though.

It really does go back to the GT1 and GT2 days. It's what I'm used to. I'm sure I could adjust to a different set of controls, I just haven't yet.

I mastered the X and Square buttons on PS2 in GT3/4

They were the only choice because of pressure sensitivity.
I also used the D-Pad on oval tracks or high speed areas.

But now that we have R2 and L2 and the Dpad is just not the same in GT5 as GT4, I'm always using the R2/L2 and stick.

People still using the old config??? Hmm they must be max traction control and ASM lovers too.

Back in the day before dual sticks or wheels, us GT players had to use X and Square buttons and a D-Pad to control the cars in the game. We only had one controller, and we had to share it. Barefoot. In the snow. Uphill both ways. In the dark. And we liked it. Some of us moved on to wheels and such, but a select few still find comfort in their old ways. The disadvantages are many. The only 'real' advantage is familiarity.

+1, been using face buttons and directional pads since the original Nintendo. It's what i know and don't have the time nor the want to bother with the analog sticks.

I play videogames since 1983. Since Sega MasterSystem in 1988 i've been using d-pads. It's no deal to me.

Btw, using X and square for throttle and brake is easier to me as I can press both simultaneously with my thumb, using different pressure on each. Leave the upper buttons to gear shifting.

Not that means that I have an uncommon thumb. I am just used to it. Its the same thing as using directional arrows v.s wasd in PC games.

I use an old kitchen cupboard with the back taken out and layed on it's side for stability the pedals grip the carpet in the room atm i find it just the right height too , i am going to measure the height and length then go to the local hardware store and have him cut me a unit out to encompass the wheel and pedals plus beer holder on the side. I believe there is a guy on GT prologue forums who has a set up for you to make with diagrams etc search there for it it maybe of use to you..

I started off on GT1 with the d pad and x/square, but moved to the r2/l2/left stick configuration with GT3. It's easy to control slow cars with precision, but the faster cars (x1), not so much. I couldn't imagine trying to control the x1 with the d-pad.

Wish I had a wheel though....

Another [] and x user, have done since gt1 although I did make the jump and now use the left stick for steering.

For those of you using L2/R2 for gas/break get these... they're worth every penny

They're cheap, they snap right on, and you don't have to worry about your greasy sweaty fingers slipping down the stupid trigger buttons.

evolve or become extinct.

Repositioning throttle and brakes to L2 and R2 not only is relatable to real pedals but also gives you the advantage of always having a finger attending them and lets you drive more aggressively

I use X and [] without any problem of using both at the same time since I use the tip of my thumb for [] and the base of my thumb on the throttle.
