Why do people use X as gas, D pad for steering in gt5?

For those of you using L2/R2 for gas/break get these... they're worth every penny

They're cheap, they snap right on, and you don't have to worry about your greasy sweaty fingers slipping down the stupid trigger buttons.

Just ordered a pair, including some pads for the sticks. I'm hoping they'll give me a longer lever (heh heh), and as a result more sensitive steering.

For just 5 USD inc. shipping, can't really go wrong.
 
Because they are analog as well since the DS2, and I'm far faster with them then with the analoge stick. And using R2/L2 for throttle/brake is incredibly unnatural to me, to the extent that I refuse to play games where the developer was too pigheaded to offer alternative control schemes.
 
The first thing i did was change mine to l2 r2 braking and accelarting and l3 steering as that what all the modern racing games got me used to

Me too, its because i'm used to it since Gt1. After owning FM3 for awhile, i tried the R2/L2 for accell/brake on Gt, but it did not feel as 'progressive' as FMs, so i feel on FM, the accel/brake works nicely on R2/L2, but on Gt it doesn't feel as good(as in FM). So i reverted to the standard Gt setup, because i'm faster and more comfortable on it( on Gt)
 
Seems I'm the only one, of the posters at any rate, who uses the x and square buttons for gas and brake, but flipped. Square is my gas, and x is brake. I can keep my right thumb plastered on the gas and just roll it down a little to nudge the brake if I need to. It's much much more ergonomic this way. With x for gas, you pretty much need to lift your thumb off that button to get to the square to brake. Not sure if this will help anyone, but it can't hurt to try right? And of course I use the left stick to steer, always have, always will until something new comes along that I can afford.

I as many others started playing GT along time ago. Just can't change setup... So D-pad and X Square...

Same here. That's what I used in GT1 so why change now. Although I play with both my wheel and controller, most of the time I am more comfortable with the controller because that's what I somewhat mastered GT with. The wheel is to add to the racing experience. I can't go with my wheel exclusively because I can't leave my custom racing seat set up permanately.

Actually if you place your thump right, you wouldn't have to lift your thumb. Using the joint portion of your thumb to race, you can use the tip of your thump to hit the brake.
 
Used to in GT3, used X to accelerate up until recently with F1 2010 not allowing me to have throttle control with X,either no throttle or full throttle, (same with GRID & DiRT 2 but was manageable in those games)!

But I use L2/R2.. not for any accuracy reasons, i cant modulate R2 any more than X. I just find it easier on the hands.

And I know for a fact its because of this that I cannot gold the NASCAR special events.

I could barely get bronze before the wheel. After wheel gold first shot on them.
 
since gt1 was my first race "simulator" ive gotten used to it... every time a new game came out with trigger throttle and brake like forza i had to change it in the settings back to x [], xbox x a or whatever.

now i do play with a wheel and when i go to my friends house i use x [] completely fine. but using the analog sticks was a big advantage then tapping the dpad around high speed ring.
