and the glare effects maybe less exaggerated.

The glare effect is absolutely tooooo much. I'd love it if we could tone it done in settings (as it is possible in photo mode).

1: Dirt/Rain/Snow effects on the car.
This is probably where GT7 looks least realistic. Your car shouldn't look like new after a race. And when driving in the wet in cockpit view, especially when driving behind other cars, there should be a lot more impact on visibility. I want my windscreen dirty and the wipers smearing the dirt, not completely removing it. I would even go further and say that insects should be a thing. (Has any game done this yet?)
Many games like DriveClub or Dirt 4 have much dirtier and more impactful rain effects in the cockpit view, which affect visibility and are visually striking. But it seems to be a conscious decision by Polyphony Digital to limit the effect of raindrops on the windshield for the sake of better gameplay. When they first introduced the first-person view with rain in GT5, the effect was much more realistic (though in low resolution). In the next iteration, GT6, they completely changed it to a sharper effect that was much less obstructive for the player.

I mean if you want realism that bad, why not just cut the "game play" out of the equation altogether and just hit up your local track day. That's always an option.

I don't have hundreds (if not more) to throw away on tyres and brakes every time I want to drive fast.
Turning to sims lets you get that fix whilst not bankrupting you.

I think there's something to be said about the type of sim you look at for realism though, and I don't think Gran Turismo is ever that, it recreates the experience in its own way, but I don't think it tries to really replicate it anywhere near 1:1.

and each and everytime you hit the wall on the PS you should go outside and throw yourself against your garage wall to simulate the injuries...

sarcasm button on.

I totalled up my total spend for GT7 rig and PSVR2 in all is just under £1,400.

Running my go kart, just one mistake* cost me 10% of my GT7 budget. Each race I spent 15% of that budget on tyres alone.

*ran over the edge of a kerb on the inside which hit the sprocket, ripping some teeth out, splitting the chain and buckling the sprocket protectors

I think this might be due to different TV settings. I‘m playing the game on an HDR TV and it definitely doesn‘t look this dark. I’d agree that the lighting in that screenshot looks too dark though.
I had considered that and checked and mine is set to HDR , having said that it's the PS4 version, I don't have it on PS5 yet. This has actually been in side since GT5, the London track was the worst for it when you drove between the buildings.

On a (good) PC maybe....on PS5 AC is nowhere near GT7.

Is the screenshot taken on PS5? They improved cockpit lightning for PS5 Pro:

I'm playing on PS4. Looking at that I can see the shadows are still way to dark. It is a realistic representation of a camera but not human eye.

Can't believe people didn't know it's on Xbox now.

Yeah, the "downgrade" we experienced from GT5 onward was very noticeable (in terms of rain).

In GT5, it was very well represented (with its own physics, accumulating at the edges of the windshield, etc.).

One of my graphical wishes for the next installment is that rain (and weather effects in general) would be better represented.

I would give anything to even see snow falling and accumulating on the windows and the car itself.

Rain projection effects (and smoke) were also better in GT7 earlier in its life cycle than they are now.

Yeah the graphics were much better in the early days, better smoke, dust and less pop in - they may have seen something that was causing an issue.
