Why won't you people just be original?

Great topic, but it's lacking some substances. You know, that sticky stuff that great threads are made of. Something that someone out there might read and go, "hummm..., well how about....", but I see that it might not happen. In which case...I might add that the great philosiphers of the time once stated that no idea, no thought is truely original as it is always inspired by our experiences and our environment, unless it is divinly inspired from an outside source not effected by such environmental influences. So, the next time someone comes up with a great original idea, think to yourself, where did this come from? Once you've come to understand that, you can truley be free to be creative.

Whoosh!!
This thread is totally over my head, I have no clue what the point is...

But I'm sure "mr original" knows what's going on.. ????

Who was that philosopher? I have a list of likely suspects, but I'd like to know for sure. Sounds like somebody I ought to read about, so that I can avoid ever falling into that kind of thinking. What an evil, anti-human statement.

Indeed, a person must know and understand his/her environment in order to think about it. But therein lies the originality - in coming up with new explanations, ideas, and uses that no one has thought of before.

Show me the person who does not believe that mankind is capable of original thought, and I will show you a person who wishes to keep human beings as animals and savages.

Ahhh, exactly! As humans we have the ability to think. This ability, as it was explained, our ideas are not original, but rather extensions of other's ideas that we build and improve on. I do not totally agree with this school of thought. Being a musician, I thrive on my creative expression in my efforts to be original. But in adobting that school of thought, unless I was isolated from the rest of the world and created my own musical instrument, then and only then could my music be truly original. Every note in the scale has already been played, every tempo and rythem have already been explored. And now with the mass world media of communications as it is, we have more influences than ever before which makes it harder and harder to have your "own" idea expressed without the influence of an outside source.

I'll have to lookup that philosopher as I can't remember his/her name.
