Windows... 10?!?

Installed it yesterday and I've used it a bit today. Really happy with it so far, only issue I've run into was that I wasn't able to right click on my taskbar to unpin programs from the taskbar the first time I used Win 10, but that just required a restart and now it's working perfectly. Games seem to be working fine, all I play is Dota 2 these days but so far it's been fine for me, just required the newest Nvidia drivers (GTX 670).

Biggest immediate quality of life improvement I see is the task view, it's basically a combination of a virtual desktop feature and the exposé feature from Mac OS X, it's activated by using Win + Tab and it's really helpful. Other thing I've noticed is that Alt-Tab out of games works incredibly quickly, it used to be pretty slow with most Source games (Dota 2, CS:GO), but with Win 10 it's really snappy to tab between a game and other open windows.

I was fairly happy with it so far on my desktop. Only issue came about. And it's an annoying one, and also a very old from early win7 days apparently. The Explorer wont update instantly when I make a folder, delete a file etc. Ie when I create the folder I wont see it, until I hit refresh manually (it should/will pop up by itself after a while). Never had it on win7 though myself. :)

There's multiple 'fixes' suggested, I've tried a few but no luck so far.

I'm waiting it out. It would be nice to see some kind of rollout schedule from Microsoft.

@Naveek Darkroom

Yes it would. Cause I'd like to have Windows 10 now, because apparently it's actually good. I guess the Windows Cycle has not been broken. I'd just like to know when I can get it.
Well me too. I use the "wait"method.

The windows itself has been downloaded tho.

After an hour of messing around with Windows 10 on my PC connected to a 37 inch TV, I'm indifferent. I like how the start menu works and such, but the UI in general feels too sharp and clean for me. Maybe it's because I came from 7 (so I'm used to aero, rounded edges, etc,) and it will take some time getting used to.

Back to Windows 8.1 (desktop) and Windows 7 (laptop). The early bugs aren't worth it. :(

Surely Microsoft will fix things, but for now I'm going back to the ones that I've been used to...

It feels great to have a real Start Menu again. I think Windows apps finally close when being closed rather than just linger around to where you shut them down from the Task Manager. Folders I use regularly can be accessed from the Start Menu. For the most part, I approve of Windows 10 primarily for a lot of the missing functionality of the former Windows 8.1 I've used for with my PC was shipped with. Windows 10 does feel more like an upgrade more than some quantum leap in computing.

My issues have mostly been in trying to ensure everything has been set up properly since manually downloading (that's right- I wanted to download it immediately) Windows 10. I had to deal with a blank screen early before eventually getting things sorted out. I guess I have to get used to this new window layout. It can be tough knowing what window is in focus unless you look down at the taskbar to know what program has the top focus. The way the windows are outlined are also strange to me.

Otherwise... I am fairly pleased taking part in getting Windows 10.

So I upgraded my laptop and it's been going pretty well, just that now the mute, wi-fi and other buttons on my keyboard don't work, which is really weird considering the play/pause, volume and brightness do.

My only pet peeve not related to a bug is that pressing Alt + Tab doesn't show the desktop anymore. Anybody know how to change that?

How does the official license of Windows 10 works?

@TJ13 .. You can download and run this to force the upgrade or create an .iso, DVD, or a bootable USB drive.
If you install windows 10 after using the download from the link, do you still get an official license (key thing) or do you have to wait when the "windows 10 reservation" is ready to download your copy of win10?

May I ask why you're opting to wait for the upgrade to start? I mean, you could just as well download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and run it. The upgrading process is the same, anyway.

Windows 10 seem to generate the key based on your previous one. Didn't bother waiting for the automatic upgrade and it activated itself just fine.

Hey everyone, I have Windows 7 ultimate and I have this 80070490 error when I try to install updates from Windows Update , do you think everything would be ok if I upgrade to Windows 10?

Guys, I know that some might fail to install the upgrade. One thing for sure, though:
1. Forcing an update via CMD doesnt work since it will display error at the end.

2. Using an ISO might work for most people. However some might encounter the infamous "Something Happened" bug. Plus it doesnt help when you already has the full $WindowsBT folder but also downloading the ISO which might hurt the quota for some people.

So heres how to enable it, the safer, easy, and most quota friendly way:

0 (prepare): You need to clean up the SoftwareDistribution>Download like stated on previous page. Or just use MS FixIt tools (fix windows update) on the net.

1. Open Regedit. You can type it on the search bar and it will show you.

2. Open Folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>WindowsUpdate>OSUpgrade

3. Add the new registry of D-WORD (32-bit) Value. Name it: AllowOSUpgrade (Case sensitive)

4. Set the value to 1 (The -eximal part does not need change).

5. Check again the update. It should have welcomed you with the upgrade to windows 10 afterwards.

6. Click "Get Started" and voila!

Total is 2,711.4 GB But in reality it grabs less from the net, that is if you happen to already have the full $WindowsBT on C: folder.

And what about a clean install from DVD (iso)? Wonder if that is going to give problems.

I also got tired of waiting but didn't feel comfortable forcing the update.

So last night I was snooping in the software distribution folder and decided to read the reporting events document and noticed at the end of the file something was repeatedly trying to do something and failing. So at this point I decided to check my update history and found that windows 10 had been trying to update but kept failing. After clicking on the details of this came up with a box that I should try restarting to try and fix this issue but to no avail - Listed with details were two Microsoft web pages. After clicking the top address:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I ran the 64 bit tool and within the hour I'm using Windows 10. 👍

And for me I love it I find that it seems to flow much better than Windows 8 and to have a 'Normal' start button again I hadn't realised how much I missed it

Its ok. Just follow my steps above.

Soo I kinda like it...

The notifications on the right look a lot like samsung ones for my phone, but that's not an issue really...

My issue is how windows photo viewer seems to be pretty dull on some of my images. Like, a lot of detail is missing from both the "photos" viewer and the "windows photo viewer"... As someone who like photography a lot and to see how crap my images look like on initial inspection is sorta dissatisfying... I can only think that it's cutting loading time to produce the lesser images, as it took a while on 8.1 to load my RAW files, and now it takes less than a half-second to do so...

On my PC that was running W8.1, the icons on the right of the start menu is now cluttered!

Damn. I had to unpin all of it.

JvM
Is it automatically activated if the upgrade is done through the update?
If you use normal method, then its done instantly. Click accept, next, etc.

If you use ISO, you need the activation code of your previous windows.

Anyway, the metro apps when close, now it is close. Previously it was just suspended, taking up memory and, if it has errors, it just kept there until you end task it on task manager.

Windows 10 is 2.711TiB in size?

Man what a large OS.

It fits on about 55 dual layer bluray discs or 320 dual layer DVDs

I know about the true size but since you said GB instead of MB I made the comment.

I'd given @FrzGT the benefit of doubt... could be a translation error between decimal indicators.. the first part of 2,711.4 GB can also be written 2.711,4 depending on the decimal style, APA style, all kinds of things. I once worked on a project in Mumbai where the lists of figures drove me insane... and they were supposed to be UK standardised :D

On-topic; just had a quick play with the Windows 10 upgrade, I think MS did a good job. All the things that should have been good about W8 now are good, all the things that should have been changed (imo) have been. Connection between apps on my mobile devices and my laptop now work properly, it's going to be a useful bit of kit I think. Seems to run a lot better too although I haven't done anything too heavy with it yet.

I like windows 10 but the one thing I don't like is that my scrolling isn't working.
I am going to see if there isn't an update somewhere or uninstall it and run a new driver

Installed Win10 yesterday, only problem I had is that I forgot I had switched my system language to English. As I used the Media Creation Tool (which installed Win10 in Italian) I lost all my apps. Not a big loss, but it's a bit of a pita to reinstall everything.

On the other hand, I'm madly in love with this new OS. There's nothing wrong I can find with it. Hell, even Edge isn't that bad!

Still not possible to upgrade to windows 10.
