Windows... 10?!?

Welp. I need some help regarding Windows 10.

So, when I saw that you can sign in for Windows 10, I instantly signed up as soon as I saw that the upgrade is free for Windows 7/8/8.1 users. But here's the thing: in Febuary my computer got infected with a pretty big virus, so I had to reset it completely. The PC was running on Windows 7, but since we've lost the product key, I thought that I had to get a new operating system. At the time I had my pocket money spend on something else, and I needed to do my exam on the PC (it was only one week left until I had to hand it to the teacher). Then I downloaded a cracked version of Win 8.1 Pro, everything worked fine. About a week ago my license expired, and the product key I used before to activate it doesn't work anymore. So, my question is: if I get me a new Windows, would I still get the upgrade to Windows 10 or not?
Yes. All Win7/8.1 gets free update as long as its genuine and you have installed any windows updates prior to the W10 update.

Still haven't had mine start to download yet, I wonder what the staggered release is like... are they doing a couple of million a day or just a few in which case mine will download August 2022.

I don't really want to try any unofficial method to force the download, the last time I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 my machine had to be replaced it was bricked so hard.
Dont worry. Sources says that the update timeline will be troughout 29 July at Central Time (worst case would be 30 July)

I'm loving Windows 10! Runs flawlessly on both my laptop and my tablet. Now I'll be waiting for the updates for my Xbox and my Lumia. :sly:

No update plus $BWindows something folder at C: yet. Look at SVChost. Its clocked at 1-2 MBps but my internet seems, fine. No noticeable lagging.

Thanks for that link. 6% done downloading at work so I can install from my thumb drive tonight. :D
+1

Just finished upgrading - the thing is pretty. Uses quite a chunk more resources at idle but maybe it's just it still doing it's things.

I'm going to do a clean install. :D

Downloading the ISO. I'm at 38%. I mean the download.

It's been suggested in various other places, that if you wish to make a clean install, you should perform the upgrade first [for legit activation purposes] and then follow up with a clean install. ;)

You can do both from the mounted ISO or a USB drive.

Status update: It really downloads! There is $Swindows folder! Gotta install when I wake up!

Still haven't got it here... come on Microsoft, I've got a Surface Pro.... surely that makes me VIP royalty or something...

Status update:

Laptop: 1 GB with 4G.

PC: 600MB with broadband

Gotta skip my online play for a while.

No install here yet either. Have had the hidden folder for a while though already I guess.

Gentleman, I've jumped on the train. I'm just hoping it doesn't buck me off into the nearest telephone pole.

The install file is on my thumb drive, ready to run when I get home tonight!

It would have taken me the better part of a day to download it at 1.5Mb at home but on the 1Gb connection at work, not so much. :D

I'm still on b.10240 of the tech preview.

The nVidia drivers are, thus far, garbage. They work, but when they don't... good lord.

Did you try right clicking on the icon and checking status?
That's how I got it to start on my surface pro. I seem to be the opposite as it is there on the surface (running fine BTW) but not yet for my desktop.

The desktop can wait anyway as that will require trying to explain to Mrs Shaun that it's different now.
Not an easy task.

Like I needed something else to make me cross my fingers.

Windows 10 wouldn't play a demo MKV file out of the box for me. #notsurprised

I did the upgrade and it was fine. Went out for about 2-3 hours, came back and it was ready and done. Didn't see any of it happening sadly but hey. I think it looks nice and everything I need so far works so there.

Excellent. The separate Iso files are on really quick servers. Took me a whole 4 minutes to download it.

In case anyone else is having the same problem here's a Solution for Windows 10 update error code: 80240020 that worked for me.:)

Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete all files in that Download folder. Do not delete the Download folder though.

Open Command Prompt as admin and type this command
wuauclt.exe/updatenow

Go to windows update and you should see it will begin to download Windows 10
