If you want to re install Windows 10 after obtaining the free upgrade you will find that you loose the free copy of the Windows 10 DVD player you were given for upgrading from Windows 8 Professional With Media Center or Windows 7 Home Premium / Ultimate.

However fear not, this simple guide will show you how to re-install the Windows 10 DVD player for free!

First download the Windows 10 DVD player for your version of Windows 10, either 32bit or 64bit:

The above downloads link directly to the Windows 10 DVD player on Windows Update, so you can be assured the file is safe.

One downloaded, use WinRAR to extract the cab file, this can be done by right clicking on either the windows10.0-kb3081704-x64.msior windows10.0-kb3081704-x86.msi depending on which file you downloaded, then select extract here:

Next you want to make two folders in the root of your C:\ drive called temp and temp2.

Copy either the windows10.0-kb3081704-x64.msi or windows10.0-kb3081704-x86.msi you extracted in to the temp folder you just created.

Now you need to open the Command Prompt, this can be done by searching for “Command Prompt” in the start menu.

Once the command prompt has loaded type the following depending on the edition of Windows you have.

  • 64bit: msiexec /a c:\temp\windows10.0-kb3081704-x64.msi /qb TARGETDIR=c:\temp2
  • 32bit: msiexec /a c:\temp\windows10.0-kb3081704-x86.msi /qb TARGETDIR=c:\temp2

Then you need to open PowerShell, this can be done by searching for “PowerShell” in the start menu, be sure to right click and select “Run as administrator” otherwise the next step will fail:

Simply copy and paste the following in to Powershell:

Add-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackagePath c:\temp2\InstallDVDAppxPackage\cd0c0ffe0ee94518833e70b1e931fcff.appxbundle -LicensePath c:\temp2\InstallDVDAppxPackage\cd0c0ffe0ee94518833e70b1e931fcff_License1.xml

The above will copy and paste on to one line in PowerShell, however if you have having trouble you can copy and paste from this text file: Windows 10 DVD Player PowerShell

Press enter and the Windows 10 DVD Player will be installed:

You should now see the Windows 10 DVD player under recent apps in the start menu, if not you should be able to find it by searching for “Windows DVD Player”.

Well, I don't know where else to go, but I'd guess I should at least try and ask for help.

This is probably an issue with the latest AMD Driver update, but when I upgraded to Windows 10, it downloaded the latest update (AMD Catalyst 15.17) for my graphics driver, which is an AMD Radeon HD 6300. The only issue that I seem to have is that my video files won't play, giving me these errors:

Sometimes, it would just play with a black screen while the audio plays. I've checked for updates and installed 2 updated versions, but the problem didn't seem to go away. I had this problem back in Windows 7 when installing the same update, which I resolved by downgrading to AMD Catalyst Omega 14.12. So, out of frustration, I did it. I used DDU to uninstall the drivers and installed 14.12, which went with no errors.

I went to sleep and it seems to have updated on it's own while I was asleep, causing the same issues I posted above and I don't know what to do now, so I'm here to ask you guys for help, please. Because I'm really irritated by this.

PS: On the Movies and TV app and VLC, sometimes it works and sometimes it looks like a broken VCR.

You dont need the Klite mega codec pack.
Mega is designed more for the encoder, standard does everything you will need

Download and install the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and try your files in MPC-HC to see if that plays them any better. 👍
I've installed the codec pack and then read that you said to play them in MPC-HC. So I went and downloaded it and installed it.
It just freezes when opening a video, but in Windows Media Player it's just a black screen with audio playing.

What format is the video?
Most of the videos that I play are .m2ts files when I record gameplay from PS3 with the Roxio HD Game Capture Pro and .mp4 files when I make a video.

Everything used to work perfectly until the Catalyst 15.17 update. I can downgrade to 14.12 again but only if I knew how to stop Windows Update from updating it.

OK, then try MPC-BE .. the latest version seems to work fine.
The download link you provided gave me an error when extracting it.

I uninstalled the drivers again and installed Omega 14.12 again. Hooray for having function again!

But I've noticed that when 14.12 installs, the checkmark is green, when installing the 15.17 and later updates, it's a yellow checkmark instead that mentions something about an error during installation.

Hello from Windows 7!

Yes! I'm back to Windows 7 due to something that I installed earlier (probably the codec pack because I doubt the Media Player Classic did it) installed something called "Deael Express"

After removing the program and using some malware removal software to scan the remainder, it found all the remaining pieces...until I pressed next for the program to do it's magic.

Screen goes black, the laptop restarts and during start up my programs wouldn't work. Content Manager Assistant for PS Vita transferring, MalwareBytes and Windows Media Player did not work at all, prompting an error each time.
Wi-Fi was permanently turned off, Firewall turned off and refused to be on even when using the manual option.

And thus...it was the end of my Windows 10 journey...I went to Settings and chose the option to go back...

I Upgraded my Operating System from Windows 7 and it is running flawless, i'm loving it, it's even more faster than Windows 7.

I upgraded from windows 8.1 pro and I dont regret it one bit... best windows in decades.
Had a few problems with some hardware not working properly (initially) like sound, wi fi, bluetooth, GPU, but went into the advanced system properties - devide installation settings - unticked - let windows download and update driver software automatically - then selected never install driver software from windows update. then I went and found the latest drivers for my hardware and installed them manually and voilá... very stable and very fast. especially start up and gaming.

Is anyone else running Windows 10 getting any strange tearing with a GTX 970? It's very noticeable when you're scrolling down a page very fast in Firefox or when there's any kind of fade-in or fade-out effect on the screen. I'm running the newest Nvidia drivers, version 353.62.

Just like when I installed Windows 8 then 8.1, Windows 10 automatically logs in the last user. A regedit and a few other tweaks later (thankfully I still had the fix bookmarked) and I should be back to selecting the user after startup instead of logging in the wrong person.

Other than that, I've have no issues with Windows 10.

Just installed today, all seems fine except for the tiny task bar icons. They were already small in Windows 8.1 and now they are even smaller! The only way to change them is some generic display option that zooms in on lots of other things and looks terrible.

@Huks All seems fine with my 970, maybe it's something to do with firefox?

I don't know how it is with you guys, but on Windows 10 Chrome has gone from being a RAM hog to a Processor hog. That is something I don't like on my laptop.

Edit.

That was a rather quick fix.

Disable the standard Google extensions and all is well.

Just got done capturing some configured/updated Win 10 images in OOBE. Got them ready for deployment via PXE with my server running Server 2012. I should be upgrading my system very soon.

So it seems rolling back from Windows 10 to Windows 7 can result in a BSOD upon booting.

Just putting this out there, cause i've had to spend the past 24 hours getting my Windows 7 setup back. Thanks, Microsoft.

There was minor tearing the last time I ran it, but that was a simple matter of updating my video card driver. Hadn't had the issue since.

Maybe some of the more tech savvy users can enlighten me on this: Microsoft have stated that Windows 10 is going to be the last major revision of its OS, but on this page (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle) it says Windows 10 extended support will end on Oct 14, 2025. It's still a long way away, but it doesn't seem like 10 will be the last OS ever.

What do people think?

Windows will be gone, but there will be a new thing called Doors®

It will be a Software as a Service, meaning that, like adobe, it will only be receiving updates rather than getting a new version in the future.

HOWEVER,

Be remind that some update may changed so much it may look like an update from W8 to W10. Plus this plan isnt really a final one.

It simply means the original version will cease support at that date. Service packs or 10.1 or sich is longer.
