I'm really confused as to why Ford is pulling out as a Works team. Next year will finally give them a chance for a champioship title, so why are they giving it up? M-Sport will still run, so we'll still see some Fiestas out on the gravel. But it's just really baffled me as to why they're giving up a chance for something they've wanted for so long.

Yes I don't understand the decision of Ford Europe 👎.
Next year Malcolm Wilson will work on the new bentley gt3.

No Loeb, no more publicity..ironically. Other than Ogier and maybe a couple of other drivers...is there any real excitement?

To be honest, I'm surprised Ford have stayed in so long without any championship title. Am I right in thinking they almost pulled out a few years ago? (I think before the new turbos came in?).

Presumably they want to focus on WTCC (which I don't understand either as its also a bit of a dying-a-slow-death series).

Personally I think more and more these days that race series should try to push some kind of rules preventing full blown factory efforts and focus on making things cheaper for the independents. Or at least prevent the kind of domination we see with Citroen (WRC) and Chevrolet (WTCC) - full blown factory efforts might be generally more attractive to manufacturers...but not when it becomes expensive and almost futile to beat the best. The balance needs to be shifted back to smaller teams...so that manufacturers can be enticed into backing an existing team..rather than having to set up their own operation each time.

Not to mention the WRC especially would be much more exciting if the smaller outfits actually stood any kind of chance. There is pretty much no chance at the title for them currently. There only has to be 1 factory team present and they're screwed.

Although there were other factors involved too, but look at the Prodrive - BMW partnership. One wonders if BMW would have maintained a factory MINI team if things were a bit cheaper...as that car clearly can fight for the title given the proper budget and development time. Its examples like that put manufacturers off, they have to invest so much just to even have a chance against Citroen.

I still blame the drivers a bit too for being too inconsistent at Ford. That really can't help - though its always going to be an on-going debate whether the problem was the car being too slow that they had to drive over the edge or if it really was the drivers making too many mistakes.

WRC continues it's downward spiral to nothingness. Lost interest in the sport a long time ago with the loss of Subaru and the domination of Loeb. At least when I did watch it I could root for the Ford teams. Looks that that's not gonna happen anymore either...

I kind of wanted for Loeb to stay one year more to take that 10th championship. I doubt we'd see someone take that amount of titles in the near future in this sport.

Ford are notorious for waiting until the last minute to make up their minds, and when they do, they usually only commit the bare minimum. I've heard that Citroen are paying their drivers more money this year than Ford is spending on their WRC programme.

Red Bull are promoting the WRC next year. This year they had no promoter, so that's what killed it. It should get some more publicity next year.

The only reason it can be as to why Ford pulled out is money. MINI have pulled out because BMW as a whole are struggling. MINI tried to make a big comeback last year, and that didn't work. No Works team this year. Seems to me like they're going home with their tail between their legs.

“At this time, however, we determined that it was better for the company and the Ford brand to reduce our commitment to the WRC and deploy our resources in other areas.”

I'm sorry, but Wut? BMW sales figures are better than ever.

That's what they want you to think. :sly:

Well, my dad told me that. Thinking about it now, you're probably right.

No, Mini pulled out because they couldn't find someone suitable to run their works programme.

Isn't the IRC more friendly towards Privateer teams? It seems that there aren't many factory programs in the IRC.

Money. Car sales is dropping drastically and Ford along with many other motor companies are cutting their costs.

And i doubt ford management would be happy to just take manufacture title without having any competition to race with. Ill respect that.

I must admit, that Ford WRC preview almost brought a tear to my eye. I'm certainly going to miss the team next year.

Could this lead to a possibility of a Ford entry into F1 or LMP ranks?

I think that a Rally team would probably cost only a fraction of an LMP1 team, much less a Formula 1 squad....

Do Ford actually do racing anymore? Theres a handful of Focus TC's, the Rally cars, and only one or 2 "Factory" NASCARs.

Edit: gutted for Ott Tanak. He was running pretty well.

Well, that wraps up the 2012 season. What an interesting season it has been. We've said a fond farewell to Sebasiten Loeb and the Ford World Rally Team. 8 weeks to go until the 2013 season starts in Monte Carlo, and a few new drivers and teams to look out for, and Red Bull promoting the series. 2013 should be an exciting season!

Because it is believed that Citroen spent more money on their drivers this year than Ford did on their entire works programme. In order to compete with Citroen, Ford would have to match them dollar-for-dollar. And even then, there is no guarantee that they could succeed.

Good news m-sport will be present next year with the support of the qatar with mads ostberg, petter solberg and nasser al-attiyah.
Citroen with mikko hirvonen and dani sordo.
VW with sebastien ogier, jm latvala and mikkelsen.
And mini (prodrive private team) with maybe juho hanninen and/or kris meeke 👍.

Tanak will go in ERC with the ford RRC.

(sorry for my bad english)

Rumour has it that Meeke might be going to Hyundai. I haven't heard if this has been confirmed or not, so feel free to correct me.

That's possible too 👍.
For the moment there is a lot of rumours, and I just said what I have heard.
I think we will know more about it next month.

Solberg has admitted that he probably won't be racing next year. Ford were reportedly very unhappy with him by the end of the season.

I haven't been watching this season, where's Loeb heading next year?

Jay
Yeah? Anything in paticular?
Just that they thought he wasn't living up to expectations. There's nothing specific - no sources, just chatter - but I have the feeling that they passed on a few promising drivers to get Solberg into the seat, only to find themselves regretting it because Solberg wasn't as good as they were expecting.

Been meaning to get back to supporting rallying as I did like the IRC when I first found out about it. It turns out that the IRC is going to merge with the ERC (European Rally Championship).

With Ford and MINI having pulled out and the the most successful driving probably ever having won the drivers title for the last 9 years, for me, doing a partial season as he has lately gone away from the WRC to do the Le Mans Series where his new Sebastien Loeb Racing team competed in the LMP2 class in the ELMS at Paul Ricard and also the French Porsche Carrera Cup at Pau, I am wondering if the merger of the ERC and IRC will take over from the WRC as the biggest rally series.
