Great story! 👍 Are you playing on PC or console? I somehow suspect the game should play great with a controller. Have got 5 hours in the game now, restarted a couple of times because of stupid decisions from my end. Definitely a classic on its own! :)

Well I started my game today. Classic ironman mode. What can I say. Loving it so far....................................

Me and Kaz to mop up? Who knows I left it till tomorrow to see if Kazanouri and myself can complete this mission.

Great game btw.
Nice story!

haha, great write up man. It's just that type of game. Really makes the things you go through stick in your mind. Visceral stuff, but maybe it being turn based adds to that.

I'm on PS3 mate. Works fantastic with a controller. I've read some prefer the Xbox controller for PC use, works fine.

I'm down to one experienced soldier now. Kazanouri was in sick bay so he missed the bullet lol.

Panic has risen across Africa and I can see them pulling the plug on finances.

Ironman classic is nails. I don't fully expect to win but I'll take humanity as far as it can go. I won't go down without a fight.

I plan to restart after my eventual defeat and learn from my mistakes.

Each mission is personal to each player. The stories and events can play out in multiple ways.
Just don't camp near to a burning car lol.

Man, this game is great, played it the whole weekend. Got a good squad setup, with two snipers with each a plasma sniper rifle with upgraded scope, headshot, squad sighting and double tap. One remains in overwatch while the other moves, alternate every turn. The use two supports with 3 extra tiles movement to flush out enemies and maps are cleaned out really quickly! Oh, and a couple of assaults to feature as fillers/redshirts. :D

Going to run in Classic or Ironman for my next run I think, game is getting a bit easy now.

^I saw you playing, wanted to play yesterday but did go down the Dishonored way.

Saturday I play for 4.5 hours in a row. (went to bed at 4am )

The game is excellent, compelling, challenging, absolutely lovable.

I also have the tuto survivor named after me, stands strong with 25 kills.

Did start with normal non ironman. Regret it.
Should have gone Classic Ironman. Plus I don't savecheat anyway,...

Had a very hard mission somewhere with the Starship troopers aliens which mutate humans into Zombies. Only one made it back....

Worst mission ever.

Generally I lose 1 guy per mission, with my squad as follow : 1 veteran (have 2), 2 experienced solidier and 2 noobs.

Love it. Need more time as too much games in a stroke again (this, dishonored and warZ today)

I lasted 91 days on Classic iron man.

My son who is 8 (not sure if he should be playing? Age rating says no) lasted 156 days on normal difficulty.
He is a bit gung ho with his tactics and base management was bit hit or miss for him.

What I can say about classic difficulty is that funds are very hard to come by. Try to get as many satellites up as early as possible.

Sell stuff on the Gray market for extra funds.
Maybe even resign yourself to the fact your going to lose nations and not try and thinly cover the whole planet but dig in at selected sites.

Engineers seem far more important than scientists and so far I've found them hard to come by. I tend to try to do mission that offer them as a reward.

What do I know I lasted 91 days lol.

I did download the original on steam for £2.99 and I can't stop playing that now. Lol.

My boy is 2012 and I'm 1997.
The original is fantastic. Would love to see that on the PS store for the vita. That would be heaven.

Lets start a classic ironman leaderboard.

I'm top

91 days.

I got started on my game on PS3 yesterday. I'm currently playing it on Normal difficulty. I have a belief that when difficulty options are available Normal/Medium should be the experience the developers intend you to have. So, this is my learning the ropes game.

My squad is now 5 units. We have one each laser rifle and laser pistol as well as 3 sets of nanotube body vests (why does this replace grenades, SCOPES, etc.?), 2 SCOPEs, 2 Arc Throwers, and a media it, with my support unit upgraded to use it three times a mission. I have autopsied three species of aliens and interrogated a live sectoid. I just shot down my second UFO and saved it at the beginning of the investigation mission.

I currently have two satellites up and am building a third, along with a new uplink facility.

I am beginning to think I should have gone Ironman this go, as I haven't gone back and loaded an old save. So far, I have only lost one man, not counting the three you are forced to stupidly use and get killed in the first tutorial mission.

The key to success is not to use both moves if you can. Keep well positioned soldiers in overwatch mode as much as possible. Place them to best support your soldiers making a tactical move. I'd say 25% of my kills are from aliens attempting to gain position on my primary advance units and being taken out by strategically placed overwatchers.

My greatest mistake was not getting my only sniper (who has experienced every mission to date)to higher ground and him getting critically wounded by a Floater. My Medic managed to stabilize him in time. After she was promoted that mission I upgraded her to be able to revive critically wounded soldiers. Saving my sniper felt good, but I still lacked a vital part of my team.

One strategy I use is customizing a similar appearance to each class. That way you don't even have to glance at the HUD to know what your abilities are. I went with the helmets for Assault, Heavy, and Sniper classes. My Support class has no helmet but a standout hair color, like bright red. Rookies are in standard armor in bright green.

I wonder if anyone else has just taken the given names for their units. I ask because I want to know if my sniper earned the nickname Cyclops because he is a sniper, or because I gave him the helmet with the thin red visor. Or is it a combo?

Anyway, tons of fun. Plays great and is just the way I wanted the game to be.

Finished my first playthrough (normal) last week, so I'm moving up to classic ironman now, see how that goes. I read that the difficulty increase is quite large between normal and classic, so I'll see how long I last then. On normal, I managed to win without any soldier dying and I lost only one country in the council, despite obvious errors on my part. Somehow I don't think I can get away with that on classic. :D

One tip for classic mode is to disable the tutorial.

The tutorial holds your hand too much, so much so that your in detriment. By the time you gain full control may nations are on high alert.

You need to build sat uplinks ASAP. With the tutorial on, your limited. It's really a juggle of base management on classic.

If you turn off the tutorial do you lose all those missions or does it let you play them unhindered? I'd love to play that first mission without entering the building like a raging bull and seeing if they still get the drop on me.

But losing those missions seems rough because you jump in with no base development and a squad of rookies.

You miss just the initial mission. Also, you can build your base on any continent, not just Europe or North America. Last, but not least: you can start engineering/researching whatever you want right away. And it turns off any hand-holding in the initial missions.

You miss just the initial mission.
Good to know but disappointing. I can't be the only one pissed at how base completely mishandled that mission.

One thing I forgot about is the sudden struggle of mission selection. I've found myself in a situation where I need to pick from three missions and one has a reward I need to get some necessities, like engineers to build uplink facilities, but the others don't have a satellite and will panic immediately if you ignore them and may already have a raised panic level. Satellites will allow me to help them later, but they need help now even though helping them now means they won't get them a satellite for much longer. I just want to march into the council meeting and tell them to drop the politics and let me stop the invasion unhindered.

That's X-com baby.

Sorry to sound off the cuff, I don't mean it. It's the standard answer amongst X com ites lol.

Not sure of your Full situation. I think it's almost inevitable to lose some countries.
You need at least Eight to stay in the game.
Try to concentrate on a strategy to keep at least the minimum required.

I've managed to last 91 days on classic (with tutorial enabled).
Recently started again (no tutorial) in Africa. I get 30% bonus funding each month.
I tend to accept missions that offer engineers as a reward as a general rule. I suppose if I'm needed elsewhere though I would forego that option.

It's a refreshingly difficult game that won't go easy on you if you want it. There's not many console titles that can say that.

That's why I liked the orignal and I'm enjoying this one. I like to need to think. It's why most FPS games do very little for me other than offer cheap escapism.

That said, having to make tough decisions is part of any strategy and being frustrated by something like politics makes it that much more engaging. But it is still frustrating.

Captured an outsider. Cost me injuries on all five units in the squad, requiring 10+ days in the infirmary for each of them. One needs 20 days. I'm currently doing an abduction mission with an assault sergeant and four rookies.

This is going to suck, but they all have laser weapons, so there is that. Oh well, I'll train up a new set of squaddies and then have my full tactical team back almost all at once.

And I am building a SHIV. Maybe that will serve a good purpose othe meantime.

If you lose a SHIV does it get a place on the memorial wall? And can I name it?

DLC sounds good, definitely getting it. Don't need the Elite soldier pack though, already got it for pre-ordering.

Started my game on Classic yesterday. Didn't dare to Ironman it yet, and boy was that a good choice! Now this is how the game is to be played, completely different experience from playing on Normal! Every error you make is punished, hard. Great stuff! 👍

Would it be a good idea to start off with hard although I have no previous experience with this game? Or will normal be challenging enough?

I would suggest playing on normal until you know the game mechanics. You can afford a few mistakes on normal, but much less so on classic.

So I finally completed my first play through on Classic difficulty. At first, the game breaks your puny spine over its knee, but after a couple of missions, I got the hang of it and managed to sit it out all the way through the end, without even losing a single country. :)

According to Steam, 5.2% of players so far have completed the game on Classic and only 0.4% managed to complete it on Impossible, which is my next goal. :D

Haven't dared to try an Ironman game yet, especially with the 'door bug' in the final mission, which I ran into once during my Classic playthrough (and was glad I had a save where it didn't occur yet). I guess that as long as you save often, Impossible shouldn't be too much of a problem either in the tactical part, but the strategic part could prove a whole lot more difficult.

Suggestions by players on the official forums are hilarious BTW. People wanting to have more Skyrangers, more bases or more units per squad fail to realize how much that would upset the games balance and would require a lot more to get the balance back than just those changes. The game is easy enough as it is. :D I feel the game is balanced pretty well, my only gripe is the focus on engineering, it's almost impossible (at higher levels) to use a research-based approach.

My point may be irrelevant because I haven't read the forums, but those were comments that have been made since before launch because that was how the original game was designed. It was balanced by much more death, so larger squads were the only way to maintain experience, and an unknown response time element, where you needed multiple bases and Skyrangers to reach a mission site before the aliens left. I remember having multiple squads going out on missions and even having to redirect way from returning to base to handle a new terrorization mission.

The aliens could also attack your base. That is when you really learned to despise the chrysallids. You learn how to avoid them when you go after them, but when your own base is compromised you don't know how far in/close to you they are.

I remember too. 👍 But I find it hilarious that people make these suggestions right now, because it obviously means they haven't played the new game (at least not far enough anyway). It's a whole different beast than the original. I for one am glad Firaxis didn't go for the 'carbon copy of the original with shiny graphics'. I would only like to see some small tweaks for this version. Save the big changes for a sequel.

EDIT: And judging from the not yet used achievements, there are some nice things in store for us yet. 👍

Small tweak #1: My guys quit wasting reaction shots because they can see, but not shoot, through walls.

I would love a PSN downloadable version of the original. Maybe even a HD upgrade to it.

Picked this up the other day via Green Man Gaming and their 25% off code, downloaded the game today and all I can say is 👍 👍

Lost two soldiers on their very first mission, oops.

Great! It was already possible to unlock some of it one the PC version by modding, but not everything was completely implemented, glad they finished it and patch it in. 👍

Well I just picked this game up on Saturday for $20 on Amazon. Already have quite a few hours in.:) Looking forward to that dlc. Is the first dlc worth getting beings I'm on PC?
