My favourite Group C car would have to be the Aston Martin AMR1 (not the new LMP AMR One). The sound of this thing gives the Mercedes V8 in the Sauber C9 and C11 a good run for its money. So nice.

For LMP I would say the Bentley Speed 8 even though its a GTP class car. So in keeping with the question, I'll go for the '10 Lola Aston Martin Coupe. The Aston Martin front just made that car.

The 905 - the last great Group C.

And the 908 - absolutely blitzkrieg speed, particularly at last years Le Mans.

for a LMP as in a "LE MANS PROTOTYPE" car ... I'll take this:

What's the name if that?

You are kidding me right? This is THE mighty PORSCHE 917, the ultimate Le Mans car, in many ways, even some you can't imagine. Steve McQueen helped a lot, of course, but wasn't needed, the car stands out on its own. A Beauty, and a Beast, in every livery, in every bodywork, in every version.

Can't resist. Another :D , and still not the famous GULF one:

To understand the importance of this car, read a litle. You can start by the text I found with this picture. Right here: http://www.autoconceptmag.com/porsche-917/

"THAT" is arguably the most dominant racecar in the history of motorsports. It set the track record at LeMans back in 1971 that still stands today.
Call it the X2010 of its day. Not to mention the all conquering CanAm killing 917/30.

917/30 Specs:
0-60 mph time: 2.1 sec.
0-100 mph time: 3.9 sec.
0-200 mph: 13.4 sec.
3.4 mpg / 105.6-gallon gas tank.
Weight: 1764 pounds
Max HP: 1580
Top Speed of 285 mph

Group C: Mazda 787B- Sound? No, not just that. It's because it's different. The pinnacle of rotary engines.

LMP: That electric LMP that I saw on some documentary. Not finished, though. Why? Again, its different.

Finished LMP: Pescarolo C60 Hybride.- It's just awesome.

My Favourite Le Mans Prototypes:

- Toyota GT-One race car

- Dome S102

- Audi R8, R10, R15 and R18 TDI

- Peugeot 908 HDI FAP and the 2011-spec version.

I saw this car in the flesh at the Goodwood Festival of Speed a few years back and although I'm really not into Porsches the one thing that got me about this car was reading it had a Flat 16 engine. I found that quite interesting.

Yes, Porsche did develop a flat 16 for the 917/30, but the twin turbocharged flat 12 made more horsepower so that was the mill that made this car virtually unbeatable, except by another 917/30. I am old enough to have had the privilege of watching these monsters race at Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca and Riverside International Raceway.

OFF TOPIC: In the U.S. what channel do they give these races on?

ESPN3.com will have ALMS... not really the same, but still. Also thats where you can watch all of the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 hours of Le Mans.

The TV Channel Speed usually has some of the race, but rarely all of it.

Have you completely forgotten the Speed 8?

👍

However mechanically the Speed 8 was very similar to this - in fact I may be wrong but wasn't the Speed 8 just a rebodied Audi basically?

Ah I see. Thats cool you got to see it at the time. Those cars are amazing to see now going slowly.

In 1999 Audi ran both an open cockpit and a coupe. The open car is what turned into the R8 which dominated for years and the coupe ended up being run as the Bentley Speed 8 which with some fairly major aero developments was able to win at Le Mans
