On June 22, 1978, astronomer James Christy identified Charon, the largest moon of Pluto. My choice of location is The Wave, about 200 km north of the observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona where the discovery was made. While the moon is named after the mythological ferryman of the dead, it also echoes Christy’s wife, Charlene, nicknamed “Char”. It’s presence helped support Pluto’s reclassification as a dwarf planet in 2006.
