my mistake, this was Westwood.. lotus 23s are super popular in vintage racing. My brother sold his for a measly $25k... it was a cosworth component factory car. Would bring in about $125k today... out of the original 130 cars manufactured. Only 200 remain.
I see your pit crew is messing with your math again Bear, lol

Lobban emailed this too me, not sure why he didn't post it here, it is really good. I think it is the first time I've ever watched a car go around here!
I met this drivers brother, David, earlier this year at the CDN round of the North American Rally Championships. He drives the factory US Subaru entry. Very talented!

@Aero: My MV Senna was an ‘02 F4 750 (#202 or 212 of 300...can’t remember now) and not the 1000. The 1000cc model came out in ‘06 I think. The black w/red trim stuck with me. Both of my current cars have that color combination. I got rid of it due to maintenance costs and being too nervous to ding it rather than just riding and enjoying it. That’s the thing that sucks about something that you believe will appreciate in value: it’s an investment and not something you use and have fun with - that’s the exact reason why I bought a 928S and not an air cooled 911. Our local dealership messed up some of my friends bikes (a Ducati and an Aprilia), so I had to take it Euro Cycle in Vegas for it to be worked on. I think you can still find one in the $12k to $15k range. And you were at Loudon right around when I was getting into it, but I wasn’t in your class. You’ve had some cool bikes. Never knew Can Am built a RR bike. A buddy had a 2-stroke “Harley” (I think they owned the other company during the AMF days) that was made in Italy by Aramicchi -spelling? His name is Bob Allison, and he was there when you were. It’d be cool if you two raced each other! And I met Hurricane at a couple of events and Malcolm numerous times. Malcom was a big draw at any T/R event because they bought out MSR, and I think Bob Hannah was into racing airplanes for awhile when I met him.

Hard to believe these cafe racers were built from a Yamaha Virago cruiser. I might try building one when I retire in a few years. Aero already has a donor bike with that old Honda, maybe you can start building yours and give me some pointers when I start mine. Or cafe out a V-Max. That would be incredible to ride when the V-Boost engages.

Anyone going to be on PCars Christmas Eve or Day? Send me invite if you’re on, can’t wait to try the Group B cars from the new fun pack.

Any MV would be awesome in my garage, especially an older one like this, one of my favorite motorcycles of all time! I took this pic at Sammy Millers museum in the UK.

The CanAm GP bike is really an Armstrong (also under the EMC name, UK). The chassis and body work was built by Armstrong and the front end is from a Yamaha TZ250B. It uses a Rotax 250cc engine which is basically two 125's conjoined by gearing between the two cranks. Lectron flat side carbs feed a crankcase induction design, so the engine proved very reliable for a GP bike in that class. Very few transfer ports in the cylinders meant much longer life for piston and rings. My model was only produced in '83/'84 and was the only one badged under the CanAm name. They then produced an aluminum chassis with the rest staying pretty much the same.
Here is a pic of that bike but it shows the motor very well (different carbs). This bike is also in Millers museum (an amazing place!).

I don't remember many of the US guys names from my days there. Don't remember seeing an HD racer either, that would have been interesting! Aermacchi was owned by AMF for quite a while before selling to Cagiva. They did make a pretty cool 250 badged as a HD-Aermacchi. That would be rarer than my CanAm!

I have a pic of an almost identical 920 in my files and have been considering doing up one. With the "cafe" movement back, people are starting to ask way too much for some of the stock machines though. I have been seriously thinking I should go back to building custom bikes instead of airplanes!
920 cafe.jpg

And the Hurricane has a business called Bob Hannah Aviation in Idaho, would be so cool to go buy a Super Decathlon from him!

So Steve, instead of selling that bike to some hipster for profit, why don't you have me come spend a few days at your place, and we build it for... oh... say... ME!!!

Sounds like a plan, though between you supplying me with scotch to do this, plus drinking some real beer, it might take more than a few days, lol.

No..".math is right....sarcasm in article... meaning many are trying to pass off a replica as the real thing.
The dead giveaway is the joints on the moly frame. They should all be braced together. ( brazing can withstand far more flexing than a weld can) .

@Aero Those are some awesome racing bikes you posted. I don’t know how you ever managed a 125. I rode one once and couldn’t tuck in, and it felt as light as a 10-speed bicycle. Blew the braking point because I was expecting some compression braking when I chopped the throttle off...and nothing! Got on the brakes, lifted the back tire and almost got hit by others out on the track practicing. Took forever to get back up to speed. Those bikes are made for riders who are smooth and can maintain momentum. That’s never been my strong point. I’ve always been blunt and brutal in everything I do, lol.

And @camel, I’ll look for you online so we can hit the track with the “Killer B” Rally Cars. Our DiRT Rally league is running Pikes Peak in them on the 3 Pikes courses available: full pavement, mixed gravel/pavement and my favorite version: full gravel/dirt. I’d invite you, but as fast as you are you’d probably break the record on your first run up the mountain!

I’ve asked my wife to start looking for old car and bike pics while going thru the boxes in storage. If I find any I’m going to scan them into the computer. Now everyone has a camera on their phone and can instantly see and share pics. I wish we had that when I was younger. Actually, that could end up being incriminating evidence so I’d probably still be in prison with all the stupid things I did when I was younger!!

Hey, just noticed that your lotus is running right close to the 914 of Bert Lackman of Bert's Automotive! Bert, my grandfather and another fellow named Charlie Godeckie all started racing in a Bobsey Formula Vee that my grandfather put together in 1968 so the three of them could take drivers training at Westwood in '69. Bert and Charlie ended up running 911's, and owned a few 935's as well... Strong ties with the Bert's automotive guys, my grandpa worked for them since the beginning pretty well!

Just had to comment on it when I took a closer look at the picture! If you have any more photos from Westwood Bear I'd love to see them, chances are I could tell you who what where and why

@bear: cool photos. A Camaro to a Karmann. You sir have ecletic tastes!

Update: Think about taking the photos out of the frames and having one of your sons scan them for you. That way you can make duplicates, and god forbid something ever happens to the original, you can print off a new copy.

Third car (somewhere around 70s-80s). Ford Cortina Ghia. Step up from the firetruck red Vauxhall Viva.
Long story short.....After a heady Friday night of liming in one of the popular pubs back in the day, on the way home in the wee hours of the morning fell asleep on the wheel and landed on the opposite side of the highway, ran straight head on into a lamp pole that came out of nowhere and landed in the ditch. Write off.

I owned 2 cortinas 71 and a 72. Both got hit, both written off. That 2 liter overhead cam engine hauled ass.
Plus the car was very light.

Yeah as I recall that 914 had a flat six in it. The extra weight made it a bit tail happy but it could haul ass down the straight.

You and David were lucky that you could get lightweight European cars. In high school we were stuck with late ‘60s V8 muscle cars as the only choice for affordable used cars. The closest we had was the Cosworth Vega a friend of mine had, or late 70s Honda CVCC.

Cosworth vega!!... worth a pretty penny today... the cortinas I owned in the late 80s.
I'll send a pic of my sons 76 Capri black cat when it's done...currently on the rotisserie. He's putting in new floor pans, fenders, rockers, and wheel wells.. it's a 2.8 liter v6 with an offenhauser split intake, 4bbl, with cam and headers.. intake is ported and polished as well as the heads. With a cam that comes on around 3grand.. it puts out around 225 hp.. it could lay rubber going into 3rd when it was stock and a bit tired. Now he surprises 5 liter mustangs.

I'll be online sometime around 4:30pm EST Gutter
I can't make that, but will probably be on after about 8 EST. Hope to see you guys.
Spending some of the day doing some deck repair...

Yes, an Olson 30:

We partnered in on it a few months ago - 'Speedy' is her name. It's mainly a racing boat more than a 'cruiser', and February - October there's a race every Thursday. We fell in love with sailing a year ago and so we partnered in so we can learn to sail. And so we can do deck repair...
That's me on the foredeck in this picture, wearing my baby-blue shorts...

Cooooolll!

Here’s an “educational” video for you to discuss with family members during Christmas dinner in case you run out of topics to talk about...

Probably one of my top 3 favorite things I've ever seen on YouTube. This and the Duck Songs have been my favorites for quiet some time (I know, I'm a dork). Always makes me smile though. And then I waddle away...
