1/64 Model Collectors Thread

It's a double edged knife, that. On one hand it does suck when nothing close has anything good, but having one of those specialty shops nearby will ruin you financially if you don't have any semblance of self-control.

It absolutely is. My local shop has all the major brands and is literally on my way home. I had to cut myself off for a few months. Self-control is a must.

And that makes me jealous. There's nowhere close to me that sells anything other than Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Johnny Lightning, and maybe a few Greenlight. But none of those are on the same level as POP RACE, MINI GT, KAIDO*HOUSE, Kyosho, Tarmac Works, etc.

To be fair, this shop is about 90 minutes away so it won't be a regular trip, but it's true that not having a local model shop sucks. My regular shop to visit is when I go on holiday to Spain once a summer, and I found another in Malta that sells older cars. The ones that were in my hometown and where I live now, all closed down.

You guys just need more specialty stores close to you. That way it’ll remove the inconvenience factor every time you visit one and consequently most of the FOMO. Helps keep prices and scalpers down, too.

No joking, though. There’re 5 stores specializing in scale models just several km from my residence, and they’re all just a bus and subway’s transit away. I’ve realized that I can take the time to think through most of my hobby purchases without worrying about them being sold out and nowhere to be found within a few weeks, and this helps to whittle it down to the ones that I really want.* I cannot imagine having to buy every one of these things online and the associated shipping costs, and that’s not including the time sunk into browsing the web on a hunt and into winning online auctions.

*There’re still exceptions, though, like this TLV Honda City Cabriolet. I’m usually not drawn into these types of cars in collecting, but when preorders opened I was attracted by the colour. I started regretting it some time after the deposit was paid. Nevertheless, seeing this dainty creature in the metal after picking it up today kinda justified my purchase decision.

Just got a shipping confirmation from something I ordered off of ebay. It's coming from Japan, so it'll take a little while to get to me. But it's something I'd looked for for a while. And I have another one that I bid on and I'm just waiting to see if I'm the highest bidder. The auction ends tomorrow morning. Normally, I don't do auctions and just do "Buy It Now", but if I'm the winner, the price couldn't be beat (imo).

The only store anywhere near me that sells premium 1/64's mostly just has TLV's, it is the Lane Motor Museum. No hobby shops around have nice diecasts, usually just plastic kits and R/C. At most maybe some hot wheels. Though I did find a couple Kaido House Tamiya inspired 1/64's at an R/C hobby shop I frequent.

Same here! There probably is a hobby/model store somewhere around my area, but otherwise it's Hotwheels from Big W or an online order I have to pay postage for. I don't collect a lot of Mini GTs though, so I'm happy with it like that

I have been getting rare 1/64 Kyoshos, TLVs, MINI GTs in a shopping mall just a walk away from home.

Said mall is a collector's haven since the 80s.

And when I go abroad, I splurge.

My wife bought a car and is keeping it a secret, but I'll find out tonight. My guess is: a SPARK - Cooper T51 winner of the 1959 Monaco GP.

My predictions were correct; my wife found it from a company that imports products from abroad. They were selling it for $15 because they didn't know its value, so she bought it right away. It's the perfect vehicle for me.

As I suspected, I was outbid with just a couple hours to go. I put in another bid, and was immediately outbid. I put in the max I was willing to pay and was immediately outbid. So that's it, that one's not for me. And I don't know if they had someone they knew doing bids to try and drive the price higher since I was the only bidder up to that point, but I'm not going to pay how much they probably really wanted for it. So the search continues...
