I still believe it's this "for a 'Vette" thing that's causing so much trouble. With respect, McLaren, it is making you sound like you don't really believe that the Corvette is an able car.

Perhaps this will help things: McLaren, do you believe that turning in a 7'42'9xx on the 'Ring is a respectable accomplishment for ANY car, regardless of its make and model?
For most cars, yes, that is.

I know the Corvette is a capable car. That time proved it. But what's not impressive is the the time it beat the Porsche by. It beat a Porsche, nice. 👍 But only by .10 secs which is more of a just barely won victory.

inferno
[EDIT]
The blue devil should be interesting.

What would happen if the Blue Devil beats alot more than the Z06 did? What if the Blue Devil sets an insane time? I still think the anti-American car bashes still wouldn't accept it.

I will say one thing, after owning a C4 and driven a C5 on a regular basis I can tell you that the Corvette's build quality and refinement has improved on just about everything--except the interior. The only good interior I've ever really liked are from Mercs or BMW's of about 5 years ago. Japanese interiors aren't that much better than American interiors...and some European cars have **** interior quality too. But it seems everyone forgets that.

There you have it. Fao, I'm now certain that your anger is misguided in this case. This man is no Corvette hater. 👍

Or a really exciting race. :)

I said that was an impressive time before.

In race, hell yeah, Vette against Porsche side by side. But this wasn't. It was a time trail to set a time.

No racing involved.

Yeah, but you could never say just that, which is why there a billion posts pertainning to nothing but irrelevant argrument.

Big whoop.
You just didn't like the fact that I said it wasn't an impressive victory over Porsche.

You can't settle for just Impressive time, and have to argue against people who thought it was great yet didn't think it was great over the Porsche.
You just want people to agree with you completely, not in one way or the other.

.....I'm just stating the facts and what has been proven already.
Yea, facts. Totally. Facts are good, but only in good context.

A 500hp Z06 beats the 'Ring time of a 375hp GT3-RS by 0.1 seconds.

heres more facts for us.....

A month ago, the LM1 Champion Audi R8 beat the GT2 Alex Job 911 GT3-RSR by 39 laps at LeMans.

Freddy Alonso and the Renault team beat both of the Jordans yesterday at the German GP.

Lance Armstrong beat a whole gang of people a couple days ago at Le Tour.

Tiger Woods went wire to wire to win his 10th major two weeks ago at St. Andrews.

You see where I'm going with this???? They are all great feats, nothing wrong with them. But, they are all very expected in that context. The time the Vette did is fantastic, great time for a great car. But, for it to only beat a car with a 125hp deficit by 0.1 seconds speaks more for the other car than it does for the performance of the Vette. Thats all.

And really, stop calling the RS a "racecar" just because it has a cage, a wing, no radio, and is lightweight. Its just a more lightened version of the GT3, that has a wing, and the GT3 optional cage as standard, thats all. You can get a cage on any 911 as an option in the "Clubsport" package, but that hardly makes them instantly a race car.

But that doesn't mean that Corvette fans can't be proud of their favorite machine for what it accomplished, regardless of the margin.

Corvette fans can be happy all they want and they should for a time like that.

But to beat a car with less than 100Hp by .10 sec. is not impressive.

Poor vette. It's like the 6'6'' 300 lb guy who gets in a fight with someone smaller than himself. If he wins, he's just picking on them or it's unfair. If he losses then everyone makes fun of him. It just can't win...

It's just that at least a few people appear to believe that the low margin invalidates everything.

No, you can be proud of whatever you want. Thats fine with me. All I'm saying is, looking at it statistically, its really expected, not exceptional. You put 500hp in a lightweight car, put a racing driver in it, and it will set fast times at every track you show up at. Its great for GM, and great for Corvette, for sure.

But, the way Fao keeps refering to the RS as a "racecar" is a little silly really. It didn't beat the time of a racecar by 0.1sec. It beat a high-spec streetcar. Now, if it beat a GT3-RSR by that margin, then I might be more impressed, and the "racecar" badge would be fitting. But, its just a high-spec street 911, not a racecar.

You'd be fairly surprised at the number of people who wouldn't have expected the car to turn in a time like that (mainly still believing that it can't take a corner and expecting it to lose massive amounts of time in the turns).

ill side with fao, once again all the touters are nothing but haters. and hate usually has to do something with fear.
fear that they're car on the high pedestal actually needs to prove itself to be on the pedestal.

btw the '01 corvette z06 with 385hp beat an '01 911 turbo around thunderhill, driven by the same guy: Steve Millen.

No, I wouldn't. I know what this whole thing is like. Haters are haters, they never change. I get crap from the domestic guys around here because my Talon is mostly Mitsu. Even though its very fast, they always have excuses. They never change.

Again, good for the Vette. We all understand that a Z06, any year, is great at the track. But, we're talking about a car with only 30hp less, and that weighs in at almost 500lbs less than the Turbo. The Turbo is a great car, and to beat it is fantastic. But, the Turbo is taller, weighs much more, and only has a fairly minimal power advantage. Expected, not exceptional.

Irritating, isn't it? :(

Still, I don't think that the Corvette deserves to be shoved out of the spotlight by the GT3, regardless of the small margin of victory.

Not really. In one ear, and out the other. I like the car, thats all that matters. They can hate all they want. I don't even drive it much anymore anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

No, the spotlight can keep on them. But, in terms of time, the light shines brighter on what Porsche did, than what GM has done. Absolutely great times by both cars. But, you have to admit, given what we know about both cars, the time by the Porsche is more impressive. Under 400hp and weighing 3000lbs, and it gets well into the 7 min range. Thats impressive, regardless of what badge is on the front of the car.

Thats what I'm sayin Elegy. But anyway, the majority of everyone here is saying the Corvette was impressive without question. I'm content. Everyone else just wants to argue, so I'm pretty much done with this damn thread.

Sorry Vette fans, some people just want to argue. This thread wasn't about the GT3 RS, just the accomplshment Chevrolet achieved with their Corvette. Thats my final word. I'm done.

heh, 2nd gen turbo talons/eclipse's are always cool in my book. When they work at least...

Peace, Fao. :)

This kind of sums up my own attitudes about the Dodge Viper. ^_^

The Porsche is due plenty of credit. I don't dispute that. It's just the attitude of "it's so much more impressive, who cares about the Corvette" that I disagree with.

Because the f'ing Vette easily outmatched both cars. What the hell kind of comparison is that?

You like to compare old to new which is downright stupid.
Yet, of course, the Corvette is also commonly lambasted for being "old technology" and "outdated". Which is it - old, or new?
I did give credit to the Vette.

I said it was impressive for a Vette. But not an impressive victory over the Porsche.
Talk about daming with faint praise. You might just as well say "well, that runner did really well - for the Special Olympics." It's clear that's implied in all you people have been saying.
That's fast for a Vette, yes, but to say it beat the 911 GT3 RS completely is stupid. By .10 seconds. But you can't accept that.

You want people to say its impressive time and victory, because you are a single minded Corvette fanboy.
Let's put it this way - what does a 911 GT3 Rs cost? What does a C6 Z06 cost? Then we can really talk about doing a lot with a little.

I don't approve of Faulio's attitude or his single-mindedness, but it's clear that you people are coming from the position of all American cars are guilty of sucking until proven innocent, and even then they're still just American cars.

Maybe I'm just sensitive to it as well, but you get that way after a couple dozen times of having Honda drivers tell me "it's still just a Neon" after my little American econo car has handed their Civic it's butt in a giftwrapped package. It's pretty damn frustrating to know that nothing you do will ever be judged good enough.

I don't believe all of them are. Definately not McLaren and JNasty.

Which is very rarely. I've owned 4 DSMs. All were tremendously fast with very few mods. But, all broke quite frequently. They are great cars when stock. They just aren't built with 500hp in mind. My Talon is very durable now, but its taken a while, and quite a large chunk of $$$ to get it that way.

I do as well. I think the C6 Vette is a great step for them. Is it the most technologically advanced car out there??? Not even close. But, for total performance and fun for your $$$$, a Vette is very hard to beat. They are great cars. But, you'll always have those people that just hate things for whatever reason. Like I said, In one ear, and out the other.

Once again, I have nothing against American cars. I wish people would quit assuming that. I love American cars d*mmit. I'm glad the S7 represents that America can build one bad-ass supercar. I'm glad America has one of the longest, if not, the longest running sports car who was reaching its 53 year old mark.

I love American cars, I love European cars, and I love Japanese cars. Just because I don't agree with someone on American cars doesn't mean I don't love them.

I wasn't singling anybody out. But I would be interested to know the relative costs of the GT3 RS - which is a great car; I've seen one up close but never seen it go - and the Z06. I'm a big fan of cost-effectiveness as opposed to less tangible things like specific output.

I heard the RS models where made in limited numbers and that they were all pretty much sold. Could be wrong though.
