I have to say Lotus have exceeded my expectations, though I did sort of expect them to make some leaps in performance when they started fitting more F1-spec parts on the car (stuff like carbon fibre suspension, quality hydraulics, developing their own gearbox, etc). From being at least 2-3 seconds off the slowest car at Bahrain qualifying, they are now getting close to 5-7 tenths off. 👍 There is still more pace to be found too, I never expected them to be getting so close to the pace so quickly this year. Clearly the basic design of the T127 is good, both in aerodynamics and mechanical. It appears to have a good balance too, as Kovalainen at least seems to find a good setup quite quickly.

Virgin have gone backwards since, HRT already had them covered with reliability amazingly and now they are close on their heels for pace. Chandhok's race pace at Monaco was actually fairly decent relative to everyone else and they too can only get better as they fit more F1-level parts. Its kind of a shame too, as Virgin did show signs of faster pace than the Lotus in qualifying initially, but as Lotus have developed their car, Virgin have had to bring out an entirely new spec car to fit the new fuel tank. In races, Virgin have been pretty terrible, reliability is quite frankly shocking. To be worse than a rushed Dallara run by a ragtag team is quite something. I don't know if its a CFD-routed issue, but certainly there has to be some questions about the design or the manufacture of the Virgin.

If the rumours about HRT purchasing Toyota's Cologne facilities are true, then teams like Virgin, Sauber and Williams are in real danger of falling behind both HRT and Lotus next year if they don't turn around their current forms.

I wanted Virgin to beat Lotus, but it seems like Richard Branson is going to have to start getting measured for his flight attendant uniform. But it's still a fresh season, maybe they will improve soon. Virgin needs to sort out their reliability problems if they want to get anywhere.

Yep :)

I think whilst Lotus have recently been able to add performance to their car, Virgin have been focusing 100% on reliability. The problems with the fuel tank, and the replacement chassis etc. looks to have had a detrimental effect on their pace.

They need to get their act together quickly.

But then again, all it takes is for Virgin or Lotus to get one point... It is doubtful they'll be able to manage more than that. It could go either way at the moment, as realistically neither of them are going to finish in the points unless their faster rivals run into problems, therefore moving them up the grid.

Qualifiing is on.
Jake Humphrey is holding an ipad.

I'm cautiously happy. My team, Red Bull maintains their qualifying record, with Mark Webber taking pole. But the McLaren's are breathing down Red Bull's necks. Hopefully we can still pull a win out of this one.

He had that at Monaco too :) The guy must've imported it from the US...

Glad to see Mclaren a little closer this time. It could be a 2-horse race for the championship if Mclaren can keep up with Red Bull throughout the season.

Webber again!

Randy Mandy obviously has an issue-Vettel is complaining of locking that doesn't roll afterwards-the tyre just stops turning.

I saw it, and thought grabby brake. The should be able to replace it on safety grounds in my opinion-it could turn rather sour.

Such a shame that Vettel's car got the better of him once again, I'm sure he could have got pole. But good for Webber, the Red Bulls are completely untouchable at the moment! It would be amazing if they got pole in every Grand Prix this year!

Definitely no pole for Red Bull at Spa or Monza. But everywhere else, not very unlikely.

There goes my prediction for Alonso 3rd . Where are Ferrari? Great to see Petrov and Kobayashi up there. Particularly after Coulthard and Brundle's comments on Kobayashi. People keep saying Kobayashi is over-rated and keep pointing to his GP2 results, but I think its quite clear he has the talent to be in F1. Its unfair to judge him based on retirements out of his control, when he has had the chance, he has made it to Q3 twice now. Hopefully he doesn't get nudged by Kubica or whoever like last time.

Again? Seriously? Is Red Bull the new Ferrari?

New Ferrari? I'm not sure quite what you mean by that. They don't have comparable history and they aren't exactly a national icon.
And if you're referring to the Ferrari domination of 2002-2004, well, Webber and Vettel aren't exactly streaking away at the moment in the championship are they? I don't think I can really say Horner/Newey/Vettel/Webber is comparable to Todt/Brawn/Byrne/Schumacher either. (though admittedly, it is a good team).

Definitely no pole for Red Bull at Spa or Monza. But everywhere else, not very unlikely.

Why do you think that? By those races they may have a working f-duct solution too to cover those long straights.

It would be very impressive to take 100% poles, that has never happened before. Newey has come close to such a record before in 1992 and 1993 though.

Today McLaren were close to taking pole, so I don't think Red Bull will always be fastest for the whole season, inevitably the other teams will catch up.

I just cringe everytime one of the BBC commentators slates Kobayashi like that.

He's made Q3 three times now by the way. Malaysia still counts even though Ferrari and Mclaren screwed up ;)

His only finish was in Spain (Where he made it to Q3) and he lost a few places off the line then a further 2 or 3 from the contact with Kubica. Hopefully he'll get a decent points finish tomorrow so that all the critics/pundits (Whatever you want to call them) stop writing him off before a race weekend even starts. The Toyota was a better car than the one he is in now, and I think it's a testament to his skill that he can make it into Q3 at all in the Sauber, especially when his experienced teammate De La Rosa hasn't made it to Q3 at all, not even in Malaysia. Consistency is a problem with all the new drivers we have seen the past few years, so people shouldn't be writing him off just yet. Same goes for Hulkenberg, who did considerably better in GP2, but people are already slating him despite the equally poor performances of his teammate Barrichello, the most experienced man in F1.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about Malaysia, good call. He wasn't doing too badly in that race either if I remember right.

Hopefully Sauber can turn the season around and Kamui can really prove himself, its easy to forget that he is technically a rookie still this year.

The F duct won't be enough on the straights to keep up with the faster Mercedes powered cars, which will also have F ducts. I'm seeing McLaren taking pole at both tracks, with possibly a Force India in a high position.

Kobayashi was so much slower than everyone else in Q3, he didn't look like he even had a fighting chance, any reason why? Was there something wrong with his car?

Also, will Schumacher be allowed to change his tires for the race tomorrow? That spin must have definitely flat spotted them, or caused some damage.

Kobayashi ran out of fresh sets of tyres for Q3. Schumacher didn't set his fastest time on those tyres, so no he isn't using them.

I woke up just as Q3 started, what in the world happened to Alonso? Went out early, did a few laps, and got bumped later on?

He just didn't have the pace, Ferrari have struggled all round, as Massa wasn't much better, only 4 tenths ahead. Pretty much Alonso just got caught out by the small margins into Q3, Kubica, Schumacher and Koabayashi were only 2 tenths faster in Q2.

Kind of

He went out later on but he lost control a bit after touching a white line during braking. The lap after wasn't enough to get him in.

Ferrari seems to be falling backwards as the seen moves on.

Also  @ Hamilton's earrings

They aren't earrings, you're not allowed to wear jewelry in the car. Those are just studs to keep the holes open. Michael Jordan has earrings, you laughing at him too?

He's the only one that can put a stop to the red bull dominance. I hope he edges out a win tomorrow. I think he can if he pressures Webber into a mistake. He didn't even set his best 2nd sector on his qualifying lap. Hamilton has looked fast all weekend, I think he can pull off an upset.

Ok then

 @ Hamilton's studs and yes I laugh at Jordan too

Ok, if I said I find Istanbul a boring track, I might take that back, probably confused it with another one.
After this qualy it looks rather challenging...
Other than that, one word: Kobayashi! :D

Alonso wears a couple of rings on his fingers.

Nice to see Petrov break into Q3! I knew my support of him wasn't misplaced.
Alonso wears a couple of rings on his fingers.
They're not a problem, though. Jewelry is banned because it can get in the way; the materials of the balaclava and racing suit can catch on ear-rings and necklaces. What would have happened in Hungary last year if Massa had his ears pieced and his balaclava kept getting caught in them?

Rings, on the other hand, aren't really a problem. Have you ever seen anyone try and remov a ring, especially a wedding ring? They're virtually permanent because they're tight. Ear-rings and necklaces, on the other hand, can be very loose.

Alonso denies that his mistake at turn twelve was the cause of his failure to make Q3.

I re-watched qualifying in slow motion. And he was at about the same place for the 2 passes at around the 1:10.8 mark. He just didn't have the pace.

But I was surprised that he stayed in the pits so long.

A grid girl passed out! Wow, never seen that before. Hilarious Jenson Button's dad took her place. Nice!

Why does SPEED Channel have to go to commercial break as soon as some action happens!

Rain is on the way. Will it hold out?
