It is being used. The DRS zone will be the main straight. The FIA has banned its use in the tunnel in practice and qualifying.

Oh right, the way some articles were worded (saying banned etc) made it sound like it wasn't happening, they should have been more clear and said 'relocated'. Damn sensationalist journalism! Still having it on the main straight is pretty useless, I guess its so they can just say there is a zone for the sake of it.

Robin.

If this is a Cosworth thing, then why have Hispania be the ones to protest? Surely it would make more sense to have Williams lead the protest. Or do you think they've stirred up too much trouble of late by vetoing the total DRS ban?

Hispania haven't protested yet, they have stated their intention to protest. For all we know Williams will protest too.
I think Williams are being a bit more quiet though (and Virgin) probably because they are part of FOTA and there are obviously going to be some behind-the-scenes talking going on.

But it sounds like a Cosworth issue to me as Williams have had trouble getting their throttle-over run to work too. We already knew from last year that Cosworth's major weakness is their inexperience with the progress made with engine electronics in F1 as they admitted as much. So it makes sense that they are still having trouble with this and other engine suppliers are not.

There's not really anywhere else that it can be put. The main straight, the run up Beau Rivage to Casino and Massanet, the tunnel and the stretch from the Nouvelle Chicane to Tabac are the only places it could resonably go. But the tunnel has been banned, the approach to Tabac is too short (and has never really produced any overtaking that is not the result of a driver error in the past), and Casino isn't an overtaking point. The front straight is the only place that is a straight with a braking zone (at Ste. Devote) at the end of it that could facilitate passing.

Why is it banned in the tunnel, if I'm allowed to ask? Were the drivers worried about differences in speeds leading to accidents?

I think this race will be just as exciting as all the others so far this season. The tire differentials will be so great I can see people passing in to Tabac, Mirabeau, San Devote and of course the chicane. The grid positions will of course still be important and if cars are on the same strategy as each other it will be hard to pass. It'll be interesting to see how quickly the super soft tires wear out as well.

I guess it could be considered risky as the tunnel is one of, if not, the fastest corner on the calendar. I can imagine many a car coming out backwards.

Definately not the fastest. Are you forgetting Eau Rouge, 130r etc?

The tunnel gives borderline grip and it's quite a tight corner. There's no room for error and it's blind for oncoming drivers. Small accidents in the tunnel usually turn into big ones (remember the Button sledge coming out backwards?).

'Don't use DRS' isn't an option - everyone's going to be looking for those extra tenths... I think the FIA have done the right thing.

@Interludes: The FIA haven't said the blown-diffusers are legal, they've simply agreed to give the teams more time to remove them pending a further decision.

There's a good interview with Charlie Whiting in Spain that covers the diffuser legality (when blown with overblow maps) and DRS in the Monaco tunnel. [Link]

Charlie Whiting Press Conference
Why does the FIA believe that the use of blown diffuser technology may be illegal when used with certain engine maps.

It became apparent to us, through examination of data, that what we thought was a fairly benign feature was turning into something that was being used, in our opinion, illegally. An exhaust system is there for the purpose of exhausting gasses from the engine and when you’re off-throttle, it isn’t doing that any more. Therefore it’s being used to influence the aerodynamic characteristics of the car. We think arguably, this infringes Article 3.15 of the technical regulations.

Why has the FIA revised its intention to ban the devices immediately

In light of what we’ve learned since sending the first note to the teams, we felt it needed more discussion. Having already discussed it with a few of the engine manufacturers, we felt it was not right to rush something through. We are always open to constructive debate.

We are going to discuss it on June 16th at the next Technical Working Group meeting. We’ll come up with an introduction plan after that. We’ve made it clear in a follow-up note that we still maintain these systems arguably contravene the regulations. We are not backing off on the principal, we are just backing off slightly on the planned introduction.

Why are the current diffusers not illegal per se

We accept the fact exhaust gasses have to come out somewhere, and teams are going to do the best they can to get a benefit from that. We have never had a problem with exhaust positions. This latest phenomenon is what we have a problem with.

Could there be a protest by teams not using a blown diffuser?

I’ve told the teams we have decided to postpone this introduction but this [a protest] could happen.

It’s always a possibility, and I’ve made that clear to the teams that it could happen. We would take it to the stewards in the normal way. We always maintain, in all of our technical directives that we have sent for many years now, that this is merely the opinion of a technical department, and anyone is free to challenge it in front of the stewards. It doesn’t happen very often, but has happened in the past.

I’d like to think that probably wouldn’t happen, but one never knows. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility. A protest is open to anybody. It would go before the stewards.

It will be interesting to see the pecking order in Monaco, especially as qualifying unfolds.

As usual the Red Bull's will likely be hard to beat, but I think Alonso will have a good possibilty of spoiling the party, as I feel the Ferrari should be fairly well suited to this track and Pirelli will be bringing the softer compound range which is more suited for the 150 Italia. Should be interesting to see who comes out on top between the two Red Bull drivers, and if Vettel can get his first victory at this legendary track 👍

I'll wait for qualifying before making any picks; maybe even the warm up lap before submitting my picks to the fantasy competition :sly:

It will be a busy race weekend; F1, Indy 500 (A Canadian on the pole), NASCAR Coca Cola 600 and Stanley cup finals maybe too! :)

I hope to see the first safety car of the season. The race should be the first of a few very interesting street races.

Some slight changes have been made to the circuit out of necessity. A truck caught fire at Ste. Devote, damaging the road and prompting the whole area to be re-surfaced.

From the sounds of things, drivers will be going across changing surfaces in the middle of a braking zone.

Action in Monaco and the cars haven't even hit the track yet... I have a feeling this is going to be a good weekend!

With the way things are spicing up and have been since the opening round, I'd like to say Webber as he pretty much dominated last year (even if Kubica had better precision hitting the apexes) I would fashion a thought of it being Rosberg, Alonso, or Hamilton.

Agreed, I love the junior categories.
Have you seen how close it has been in the last two qualifyings?

They drive like they're certifiably insane - fantastic fun :D

@interlude, good find, when did that happen?

@Hollidog - No, actually. We don't get the junior categories here in Australia, so I usually only have time for the highlights on YouTube.

@TenEightyOne - No idea. I found it on the F1 Fanatic round-up this morning.

Will be a test for the rules... If they work here, they'll work anywhere. I don't think they will though.

I can't see anywhere one driver will blast past another just because the tyres are better. This will put more emphasis back on qualifying (surprise surprise), with the pole sitter then winning so long as they are the first to pit each stint.

Prediction:
Vettel
Webber
Alonso

The most important news isn't told here yet?!?!?!?!

Finally it's going to be shown in HD!!!

Well I definitely think the track resurfacing after that fire will hurt the option tyres.

:D

Every race this season's been shown in HD, hasn't it?

OT: Here's the work in progress, I understand it's been finished now.

Not in the Netherlands, Monaco will be the first race shown in HD.

Ah, fair enough :D

FOA have broadcast an HD feed since the beginning of the season, it's a shame that apparently some country's broadcasters haven't been broadcasting it :(

You know what? MotoGp is now behind the decoder....Thankfully I have most of the sportchannels.

Awww. St. Devote is one of the exciting corners on the circuit and a possible overtake zone.

Why is practice on Thursdays?

Because Friday is considered a "holiday" or something like that. I don't remember exactly what they said on BBC.

Grand Prix racing is big business for Monaco so they hold a public holiday on the GP Friday. The shops and streets are open to the public.

GPs used to be held across the Ascension Day weekend, that practice ceased some years ago... although this year Ascension Day falls on Thursday 2eme June.

Inquiring minds wanna know ... is Vettel driving a Ferrari around "Cote d'Azur" in GT5, or a Red Bull around Monoco in F1 2010?
