STI has the six speed and stronger diffs (all three) as far as I know. Its more or less capable of being modified further than the WRX before something will break.

Superior to the WRX in what? With all those updates shoveled at the car back in 2009, and one more time for 2011, "apparently" the WRX is the superior product. For less money too. Too bad both are a shade of their former selves and would be near or at the bottom of my list of sport compacts that I would spend my hard-earned money on.

It would have been entirely different four or five years ago.

That must be one sad list.

Better drivetrain, bigger intercooler, better and lighter suspension, wider track... The STi versus WRX difference is much like the EVO versus Ralliart difference... it's not just power... there's a lot of other things going on that make the top dog a better handling car and faster on track.

Since it's kind of related, I'll post it here rather than make a whole new thread for a special edition. Remember that talked about Cosworth model? Well the stats are in, it's almost 400hp, 0-100km/hr in 3.7sec, 6-piston brakes up front, and fettled suspension, exhaust, pretty much the works.:dopey: It will be a very potent performer though.:scared:

The 2011 WRX will have the sti wide panels and wider track. However, simply putting on a wider set of rims and tires with a different offset, accomplishes the same thing.
The diffs and electronics in the STI make the biggest difference, both performance and price wise.

Not exactly. If we're going to bat around in the segment, its pretty simple:

1. 2011 Ford Mustang GT
2. 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Turbo
3. 2011 Volkswagen Golf R20

...Just to name a few...

Simply put, the current WRX and STi just don't do it for me. Lackluster interiors, rather ugly outward appearance, and just a general Toyota feeling drive me far, far away. All of which is a shame, because the mechanical bits and pieces underneath still make them excellent performance choices. Its not like back in the day when the Isuszu Impulse RS was so ugly you had to love it. These guys, no, it just doesn't work like that.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but certainly seems relevant.

Question for you, Brad. Have you driven a newer WRX yet?

All the negatives about the wrx/sti, yet your list has cars that do all the bad things, worse? The cobalt still has a very poor interior and the boy racer body style is not doing it for me anymore. I like the power plant but fwd and tq steer are not fun on a daily basis. Got nothing against the GT but the interior will again be poor and I suspect handling will be same ol' same ol'. Love the golf and the motor but again fwd and paying almost $30k for a golf is not something I would ever consider doing.
Truth be told, none of the car you mentioned would be in my considered list of cars to purchase, but neither is the wrx or sti.

Brad is quite the fan of VWs and General Motors products. So naturally the Golf and Cobalt would be on there. Interesting side thought: The Cobalt has an optional limited slip diff. What's the alternative? Sounds like a nightmare...

Although I'd probably cross-shop the WRX more with the GTI, MS3, Civic Si and Cooper S, not so much the R20 and GT. I think the R20 is something a little closer to the STI.

A friend has a 2007 gti with a GIAC chip, rs4 rims, h&r springs, milltek turbo cat-back. Nice car.

You can get a 260hp/260ft-lb Cobalt SS Turbo without an LSD? Good lord...

Unless you know of a local Subaru dealer that's willing to give a 23 year old guy who drives an ST204 and has no plans on buying a chance to drive one - No.

But, I've sat inside them. Tinkered with them a bit, read-up on them, etc. I'm just not particularly impressed.

One of my friends got to drive the newest WRX when his dad was buying a new Legacy, and he was very impressed with it.

When you do, you'll find it has nothing of a Toyota feel to it. The stiffness of the clutch in the WRX is something I have never experienced in a Toyota.

I was referring more to the interior (hard, oddly grained, ishy-plastics despite their tight fit) and body style (very Corolla-like) in the "like a Toyota" category. I realize I should have been more specific.

However, this is nice:

EDIT: Tree'd!

A return to normalcy. I like it.

....

:D < ---This stays the way it is tomorrow, rite?

Awesome. Should've been this way from the start.

Right, I'm just going to disagree with everything you're saying.
Thing is that when you go look at a car with the predisposed notion of dislike for it, everything about it will disappoint you.

That sedan looks so much more legit with that big wing. I like it a lot, but I'd still have the hatchback.

Seriously? I just went into a Subaru dealer dressed like a complete d-bag, said I wanted to drive one and we were on the test drive within a couple minutes. The salesmen came with me but didn't see to care that I was 22. I think the biggest thing is to dress correctly. I wore a sport coat, euro trash jeans and a button up shirt. It makes you appear older for sure.

Just tell the salesmen that the Celica is you project car and you drive something else that you have at home, I think I told him I had an Audi A3 or something.

The car was awful by the way.

I test drove something like 17 cars over the past month. Never once was turned down and I was in jeans and a tshirt or hoody every time. In these times, dealers can't afford to turn anyone down.

But they also can't afford to let anyone just go out and rag on a car they could potentially sell. I've been turned down for driving a new Mazdaspeed 3 four times now. Also the sales person can't be tied up with someone who probably won't buy the car because they might miss a sale.

I typically go early Saturday morning since most people aren't car shopping yet. I would hate to take away a salesmen's time when he/she could potentially make a sale.

"This is the first time that Subaru has ever offered an STI in two body styles."

Erm. Didn't they sell the sedan and wagon side-by-side or was the wagon limited to just the WRX trim?

Have you tried going on a weekday you don't work? Does wonders as the salesmen usually know no one's coming in unless they're scheduled to look at a car. Pretty much how I've been able to look at cars though I usually dress nicer & take the 5.

But, as you noted, appearances do wonders.

No, that was just the wrx.

No, that was just the wrx.

In Japan they also had the STi wagon...

I really like the new sedan STi. I still prefer the 2007 model, but if I had to buy a new car now this one is an option, the hatchback is not !

Oh and I'd like to see the new STi in WR Blue Mica, not that strange purple blue.

It is a bit of a minsnomer, isn't it? There always was an STi Version of the Wagon in Japan, (at least,) but not here. It's definitely the first time they've done it here, and the first time this generation.
