Superior to the WRX in what? With all those updates shoveled at the car back in 2009, and one more time for 2011, "apparently" the WRX is the superior product. For less money too. Too bad both are a shade of their former selves and would be near or at the bottom of my list of sport compacts that I would spend my hard-earned money on.
It would have been entirely different four or five years ago.
Better drivetrain, bigger intercooler, better and lighter suspension, wider track... The STi versus WRX difference is much like the EVO versus Ralliart difference... it's not just power... there's a lot of other things going on that make the top dog a better handling car and faster on track.
That must be one sad list.
Question for you, Brad. Have you driven a newer WRX yet?Not exactly. If we're going to bat around in the segment, its pretty simple:
1. 2011 Ford Mustang GT
2. 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Turbo
3. 2011 Volkswagen Golf R20
...Just to name a few...
Simply put, the current WRX and STi just don't do it for me. Lackluster interiors, rather ugly outward appearance, and just a general Toyota feeling drive me far, far away. All of which is a shame, because the mechanical bits and pieces underneath still make them excellent performance choices. Its not like back in the day when the Isuszu Impulse RS was so ugly you had to love it. These guys, no, it just doesn't work like that.
All the negatives about the wrx/sti, yet your list has cars that do all the bad things, worse? The cobalt still has a very poor interior and the boy racer body style is not doing it for me anymore. I like the power plant but fwd and tq steer are not fun on a daily basis. Got nothing against the GT but the interior will again be poor and I suspect handling will be same ol' same ol'. Love the golf and the motor but again fwd and paying almost $30k for a golf is not something I would ever consider doing. Not exactly. If we're going to bat around in the segment, its pretty simple:

When you do, you'll find it has nothing of a Toyota feel to it. The stiffness of the clutch in the WRX is something I have never experienced in a Toyota.Unless you know of a local Subaru dealer that's willing to give a 23 year old guy who drives an ST204 and has no plans on buying a chance to drive one - No.
But, I've sat inside them. Tinkered with them a bit, read-up on them, etc. I'm just not particularly impressed.
I was referring more to the interior (hard, oddly grained, ishy-plastics despite their tight fit) and body style (very Corolla-like) in the "like a Toyota" category. I realize I should have been more specific.
However, this is nice:
EDIT: Tree'd!
A return to normalcy. I like it.

Seriously? I just went into a Subaru dealer dressed like a complete d-bag, said I wanted to drive one and we were on the test drive within a couple minutes. The salesmen came with me but didn't see to care that I was 22. I think the biggest thing is to dress correctly. I wore a sport coat, euro trash jeans and a button up shirt. It makes you appear older for sure.
Just tell the salesmen that the Celica is you project car and you drive something else that you have at home, I think I told him I had an Audi A3 or something.
The car was awful by the way.
I test drove something like 17 cars over the past month. Never once was turned down and I was in jeans and a tshirt or hoody every time. In these times, dealers can't afford to turn anyone down.
Have you tried going on a weekday you don't work? Does wonders as the salesmen usually know no one's coming in unless they're scheduled to look at a car. Pretty much how I've been able to look at cars though I usually dress nicer & take the 5.But they also can't afford to let anyone just go out and rag on a car they could potentially sell. I've been turned down for driving a new Mazdaspeed 3 four times now. Also the sales person can't be tied up with someone who probably won't buy the car because they might miss a sale.
I typically go early Saturday morning since most people aren't car shopping yet. I would hate to take away a salesmen's time when he/she could potentially make a sale.
"This is the first time that Subaru has ever offered an STI in two body styles."
Erm. Didn't they sell the sedan and wagon side-by-side or was the wagon limited to just the WRX trim?
No, that was just the wrx.
