Great race overall. The best race so far at that track.

He drove into Bruno Senna and damaged his front wing. He drove into a trackside sign while behind a safety car and wrecked his front wing - blaming Daniel Ricciardo for it. In his frustration he overtook Romain Grosjean by driving completely off the inside of the track - and had to give the place back.

He made a really very good pass on Jenson Button three laps from the end (though Button kept him at bay for 6 laps before that) but it was far from "excellent" - or even "good" - driving to that point. He acquired his position through the actions of others - Hamilton's mechanical failure and the Perez/Di Resta/Grosjean/Webber incident bringing out the safety car just after he'd pitted from the wrong call on his tyres. Let's face it, the Toro Rossos wouldn't hold him up (either time) and Webber was told not to and then brought into the pits so he wouldn't.


Everyone needs luck - nothing wrong with inheriting places through luck - but luckiness doesn't equal goodness. He did well to get where he was, but it wasn't an excellent drive and it wasn't his best. It was his luckiest.

I'll admit that Vettel did a good job today, but he was helped a lot by the carnage and safety cars. Absolutely ridiculous first few laps, though.

Alonso/Kimi deserve driver of the day. Kimi had a great start which put him in the position to win, and Alonso hauled himself from 6th to 2nd. Vettel did a good job, but it was incredibly lucky.

Yeah, Seb had some decent moments, but he had many more in the bonehead category.
 
Haha! Sebastian Vettel is the best driver on the planet! He can not be stopped on his way to his third consecutive driver's title. And I may get to see him clinch it live and in person! :D

It's also worth pointing out that Alonso benefitted from the second safety car too. People benefit and lose out from safety cars all the time. During the second safety car, Kimi lost a 7 second gap to Alonso. It's the only reason he was close enough to have a chance of winning at the end.
 
Seb was so lucky, but he's deserved this luck after all of the bad luck in Valencia. McLaren failing Lewis, (Kimi knows how that feels....)

Another consistent Fernando. Seb's driving was scruffy, his strategy was only decent but the timing of the safety cars helped him but every champion gets their bit of luck we don't even have to mention Lewis in Brazil 08.

This championship has been amazing and whoever wins it, truly deserves it.

Yes. Yes he did. You'll notice that I didn't, in fact, say anything contrary to this.

Yet at the same time you seem to have only noticed these two numbers (and he started 23rd - Pedro de la Rosa failed to start the parade lap and started from the pits behind him) at the exclusion of every single fact in my post. So which part of my post full of facts is it that you disagree with in particular?

Which three guys are you talking about? He was already ahead of Grosjean, Webber and Perez when they had their accidents. Sure, Webber screwed up his own race prior to that and made a mess of Massa's and to a lesser extent, Maldonado's, but that's all I can think of atm.

Grosjean, Webber and Hamilton. Webber basically took himself out of the picture with the incidents, and pulled Maldonado out with him. Which worked to Vettel's favor.

Never expected him to have trouble with Massa, the Mercs (honestly, those cars are garbage on end-of-race pace) or anyone else up there... but expected him to have trouble with Button... he lucked out on pit stops and tire difference there.

Are you really disregarding all of the points he made? :odd: Vettel made some boneheaded moves in this race, and he was lucky to get away with those, much less everything else falling into his lap.

He gave credit where credit was due. And he's entirely correct. Sebastian made a whole lot of bad mistakes in that epic run.

Personally, I think that just makes it a bit more special that Vettel had to make up for those mistakes by doing it all over again. Given all the carnage and safety cars, if he hadn't had those incidents, he might have actually... won.

Like seriously how is that pure luck? You still need to be a brilliant driver to make the most of the car's pace to climb up the order. Just look at Webber this race, he failed to make use of his car to maintain/improve his already strong place.

Anyways, on another note, great driving from all the world champions in the top 4. From looking at Webber's and Perez's scrappy battles VS the hard but fair battle between Button and Vettel, you can really see what separates the champions from the ordinary. 👍

Best race thus far in 2012, finally an Iceman win for Lotus yeah :D:tup: Love his typical ice cool attitude, just Kimi being Kimi :sly:

Well, I was right in that Kimi would win at least :-D

I couldn't have been more wrong about the others. Very good race for Vettel. The safety cars helped him out a lot though by keeping the field bunched up, I don't think he could've done it if the race progressed normally.

Yeah, but he suffered all of Mercedes' mechanical failures and his improved pace (I get the feeling he isn't giving it his all since he announced his retirement) has been hindered by his car's horrible end of race pace. I agree, though, not the smartest move at Spain and Singapore.

Anyway, Austin is next. Will the hype live up to its expectations?
 
Default quick opinions of the racers:

Kimi - LEAVE ME ALONE, I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING... yup, he certainly did

Alonso - Good result from a car that looked patchy on pace

Vettel - Excellent result and certainly did the best with a bad situation. Still can't help feeling that until the decisive pass on Button (who is one of the few who will be fair enough to yield in that situation*), Vettel's passing was very scrappy. He can pass, but in the mid-field he's not a natural at it.

Others, in no particular order:

Button - Oddly lacking in pace still, but got decent points

Perez - Idiot

Webber - Idiot

Hulkenberg - Idiot

Grosjean - Unlucky. Victim of others this time, IMO.

Rosberg - Very unlucky to crash, very lucky to get away with it

Maldonado - Quick, but seemed to disappear from view a bit

Massa - Unlucky to be bumped by Webber, but a bit of brain-fade flooring it over that harsh kerb and sealing his own destiny...

Race overall:

Fairly exciting for an Abu Dhabi race. Most of that was crashing of course, but Alonso closing down Kimi at the end was a bit nail-biting...



*Not just my opinion: Vettel said it himself post-race.
 
I'm happy to see Kimi win. I really have to give a hand to the people at Lotus. They've improved quickly since returning.

After what happened to Lewis Hamilton this race, I really can't blame him for leaving McLaren now.
