2012 Rolex 24 At Daytona - Race Finished!

So apparently the Grand-Am rules mandated the Audi using a racing-modified road-style clutch, instead of a full-on racing clutch (similar to the GT3-spec Audi). Thus the problems experienced by both cars minutes apart. The Oryx car has starting issues (combined with team driving issues) and now the APR got nudged into the wall.

Honestly, give them some credit. Both teams are new to the series, driving cars that are new to the series by a manufacturer who's new to the series and their first race is one of the most challenging in the world. So far so good, but I think if Audi wants to find a lot of success quickly, they need to sort out the technical regulations and then hook in another team that has far more Grand Am GT experience to run some R8 while the Oryx and (especially) APR teams grow. Otherwise it might be awhile until the Audi's start showing off their chops.

Oliver Gavin will be coming out in the 90 from the garage. He usually is the clutch player for the team when they need to come from behind, and Magnussen also does well in that role. Let's see what happens this race has a long way to go still.

I wouldn't mind the 8 winning if a Corvette can't, at least than we can see McNish complete the endurance triple crown.

Yeah I've only been able to start watching about an hour and a half ago so didn't know. Only got to see the 90 go to crap, and I really hope the #5 can do it. I really don't want to see a Ford Riley win this.

And I don't wanna see a BMW-Riley win this, so I'm rooting for whatever is in front of those Ganassi boys.

I agree, look at the Corvette Daytona Protos they're not much to rave about as far as the race has gone.

I have to agree with you, now I've got a headache since you and Snapper have brought me back to rational thought. I'm a big McNish fan but I can't stand AJ there are only a few drivers in Nascar that drive me up the wall on the same level of the Busch brothers and he's one of them.

Now I can see you're most likely a Chevy man and I understand that car culture is an irrationally biased curiosity... so I'm confused when you say that we're bringing you back to rational thought and then you go on to mention your dislike for inanimate car brands. You make it sound like Ford pee'd on your lawn once and BMW teepee'd your car! They make cars! They make good cars, too! There's two choices you have here in my mind: One, accept that this is irrational thinking and relish in it or two, think rationally as to the reason's for your general dislike over something which I can guess has never done anything with the sole intention of offending you.

Just so we're clear here, I'm not saying you should like everything, especially BMW and Ford. I respect your opinion. I'm merely saying that I think it's a bit over the top to go out of your way to hate something like a car brand. For example: I generally dislike BMW owners and I dislike the stereotypes that are associated with the brand, which is unfortunate as BMW makes very find driving automobiles. But that doesn't mean that I hate them.

When a person starts talking about companies that sponsor them, it's not bad when someone is subtle about it, Waltrip is about as subtle as a cast member from Jersey Shore though so it's more annoying than anything(and also the main reason I will never shop at Aarron's other than it being a complete rip off).

Edit: Flying Lizard got a stage-1 weight reduction.

Good point. I do prefer to pick an underdog, that way if or when they do start winning, I can feel a sense of hipster pride and say with joy "I liked them before they were winning." Then if the team becomes boringly dominant, I'll find another team to latch onto so I can follow their progress. Similar to how you might treat your B-Spec drivers.

I do like Ganassi's team though, as it is a concentrated example of what the Daytona 24 Hours is. What makes the race unique from any other.

On the face of the D24, it looks like any other sports car endurance race. But when you just scratch at the surface, you see that it is one of the most complex races in the world. What other races combines that many drivers from that many different types of disciplines on the track at the same time?

Ganassi's team currently has sports car and GT car pro's, NASCAR stock car drivers, an ex Formula 1 driver and several Indy Car drivers as well. The same can be said for the rest of the field with teams and drivers coming from various other series both overseas and right here in the USA (Flying Lizard, Risi Competizione) just to race in this event due to it's prestige. You have NASCAR drivers, Le Mans Champions, IRL Champions, Rally champions and many other disciplines all on the track right now. Not to mention musicians and actors.

It's one of the most diverse and greatest races in the world that is match by no other.

On top of that, it's raced on a track that (in my opinion) is one of the few circuits in the world that holds two prestigious marquee events for the two major respective series that race there. The Daytona 24 hours being one, the Daytona 500 being the other. Few other tracks can easily say that they have two historic and prestigious races on their grounds. Sebring has but one, Le Mans has but one, Indianapolis has but one, Monaco has but one... and it goes on.

I've always liked the Ganassi cars in DP, in GT my favourite were the Risi Ferrari's but the Porsche's have a huge advantage on this track.

I must admit I haven't given the GT class much love, I usually only do that for Le Mans and ALMS. As far as Daytona Proto go, I want that #5 to bring it home.

GT is just a Porsche cup in this race, in ALMS and Le Mans they're actually battles all race, most of the action has been in the DP's in this race.. #5 looks ok at the moment (top Corvette I think) but other Vette's had problems, reliability is as important as speed in these endurance races.

Well we all know that Corvette knows that, but this is different then Le Mans. I also agree the GT2 races are quite exciting.

On a side note the commentators must be quite tired (understatement obviously) to be talking about race ending moment at this point. I never liked when a commentator started talking ill or jinx like speaking, because when things go wrong I always blame that commentator(s).
