Denny Hamlin fined 25,000 for... something.

Hamlin fined for Phoenix post-race comments: NASCAR has fined driver #11-Denny Hamlin $25,000 for comments he made following the March 3 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. NASCAR determined that Hamlin violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the 2013 NASCAR Rule Book. NASCAR issued the following statement regarding the penalty: "Following the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event last Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway, Denny Hamlin made some disparaging remarks about the on-track racing that had taken place that afternoon. While NASCAR gives its competitors ample leeway in voicing their opinions when it comes to a wide range of aspects about the sport, the sanctioning body will not tolerate publicly made comments by its drivers that denigrate the racing product."(NASCAR)
Comments: NASCAR did not announce the specific comment that got Hamlin fined, but the following appears to be his primary complaint against the car after the race (per Toyota PR):
Q: How much did you learn about the new race car today?
Hamlin: "We learned a lot. I don't want to be the pessimist, but it did not race as good as our generation five cars. This is more like what the generation five was at the beginning. The teams hadn't figured out how to get the aero balance right. Right now, you just run single-file and you cannot get around the guy in front of you. You would have placed me in 20th-place with 30 (laps) to go, I would have stayed there -- I wouldn't have moved up. It's just one of those things where track position is everything."(3-7-2013)

So apparently saying they are still learning the cars is a horrible thing to say.:odd::rolleyes:

I really want this either to happen at Dega or at Michigan.

And I thought a certain member here had irrational conclusions, I forgot about this "Church".

Also, you actually want them to picket a race?

"Actions detrimental to Stock Car racing"

Once again, its another way of saying "You not allowed to speak your mind at all". No surprise to see Nascar denying its drivers freedom of speech.

Makes me wonder if NASCAR even wants these guys to do any interviews the way their fines are coming out with little explanation to the public.

It's one thing to give a suggestion to NASCAR on how to change the car.

It's completely different to.. oh 🤬 it.

Kyle Busch won first COT race and said the car sucked and got no penalty for it.

Supposedly the comment that got Hamlin in trouble-

Hamlin responds to penalty-

"Ultimately, I'm not OK with it," Hamlin said of the penalty. "This is the most upset and angry I've been about anything in a really, really long time anything that relates to NASCAR ... the truth is what the truth is and I don't believe in this, I'm never going to believe in it. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not going to pay the fine. If they suspend me, they suspend me. I don't care at this point."

I think NASCAR is going to lose this. Hamlin is too big name wise to outright suspend- least they want a horde of angry Virginia fans (Still a very big state for NASCAR) to protest and not watch races or go to races anytime in the future.
You saw what happened when Jr. missed 2 races last year- how would the Hamlin fans react to him missing a race or two because of NASCAR being petty?

Except Jr was injured, this is not injury related. Hamlin said NOTHING wrong. All he said was that its back to the drawing board, which wasn't really anything mind-blowing (well, maybe to NASCAR it was).

I hope he stays to his word and refuses to pay it.

I have heard far worse things by drivers and they never got penalized. I also think some blame should be thrown at the reporters who basically set athletes up for comments like that.

That's kinda my point, Blitz. Denny might not have the following Jr. has but he is more or less the king of Virginia- when I went to Martinsville he actually beat Jr. in loudness during driver introductions. If the JOUNYA! fans want to scalp their tickets because Jr. isn't racing because he's injured, imagine what happens if they suspend Denny for his very informed and non-bias opinion.

I'm pretty sure Virginia fans won't be the only fans in anger about this. The fact that nothing in that comment suggests anything seriously malicious is pretty much going to upset many people as they will consider this unnecessarily harsh.

I think it's interesting that they are fighting to make the drivers as transparent/marketable as possible... except when they actually say anything.

I can get freaking out about the Daytona tweet thing, because that was a pretty ill-advised comment after that horrific wreck in the Saturday race; but this is ridiculous. All they are going to do is draw more attention to it by doing it anyway.

Maybe if Hamlin gets suspended for not paying the 🤬 fine, the other drivers might stop being NASCAR's slaves and actually speak out about a driver getting suspended for expressing his honest opinion on the Gen-6 car.

Then again with that idiot running ruining the sport, he might suspend all 43 drivers. :scared:

Hmmm so whats worse, having one family idiot run things or having the entire family of idiots running things?

Well, I guess NASCAR needs to learn its lesson:
NASCAR penalized for Denny Hamlin fine: outlaw4rc has penalized NASCAR one LVMS race ticket purchase for fine assessed to Denny Hamlin. outlaw4rc determined NASCAR violated Section 6-3 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the 2013 NASCAR Fan Rule Book. outlaw4rc issued the following statement regarding the penalty: "As a race fan, I do not tolerate NASCAR fining drivers for constructive criticism, especially if they are done in a respectful matter. NASCAR should learn that it is in their best interests to remedy issues regarding the racing product through mutual cooperation with drivers, teams, and track officials rather than hand out penalties, as it compounds the problem with bad publicity."
:sly:

Honestly this is going to be rather interesting. If Hamlin does get suspended from NASCAR because of this, I doubt all of the spin they would put on TV would be louder then the millions of people on Twitter boycotting NASCAR- people they need watching now more then ever with the TV deals for everyone but FOX expiring soon.

It would lead to this question- can you really fine drivers in NASCAR? Sure, a guy like Carl Long won't exactly have a lot of people behind him (Which he didn't when NASCAR fined him an insane amount of money he couldn't afford), but if a guy like Tony or Jr. get handed a fine and refuse to pay it......... what can NASCAR really do without turning a lot of fans off the sport?

Interestingly while watching Racehub, guess what I read:

"Nascar says Hamlin can Appeal the the fine"

Willing to wager that will be taken advantage of.

I'm glad Hamlin isn't paying the fine. Everything he said was true about the racing. Drivers should be allowed to have a personality. NASCAR always makes the most stupid fines, just like them suspending Clements for what he said off air. I hope the race this weekend is exciting or I think I might just watch the final 20 laps or so. Rant over

Has anyone made a "Scumbag Mike Helton" picture yet?

Don't think so, but expect a "Scumbag Brian France" one to come out soon and hopefully, posted front and center on Twitter.

Well, if he's already going to refuse to pay the fine, what difference would an appeal make if it fails? Might as well try. If they suspend him all it's going to do is blow up in their faces anyway.

Did you bother to read any of the block quotes posted in here today?
