Italy better win their other matches
 
I have to say I enjoyed watching England play these two matches. Granted, it's a very different England (very young and unexperienced), but I believe they're creating something there. It's a shame they most likely won't get to the next round.

On the other hand, Uruguay really sucked. In both matches. Obviously they have many good individual players, but it simply doesn't work as a team. In fact, they remind me a bit of Portugal with that "look at me, I'm amazing" attitude (when they're really not).

Actually, if Costa Rica beat Italy, England are out. No AND about it. Costa Rica on 6 points would be out of sight for England, and since Italy and Uruguay play each other, one is guaranteed to have at least 4 points, which is more than England's maximum of 3.

England need Italy to win out to have any chance now.

There are bigger issues than Rooney in my opinion. As good as the Premier League is, the National team is bad.

I really need Japan to win this.
 
Japan are playing it safe. They have possession but not really going for the goal that much.

I think Japan will win but it will be slow.

And the Greek captain just got sent off.
 
I want Japan to win this... but man I don't know about this... Greece is playing like they are out for blood. :scared: :eek:
 
Starting to get very impatient now. Only a matter of time before Japan score.
 
The Greeks are such dirty players. Every time Japan tries to counter-attack they trip them.

The Greeks have accepted the best they can do is draw. They are wasting so much time.

How did the ref just ignore that small fight?
 
The Japanese attacks are so ridiculously slow. The Greeks have plenty of time to get their defenders in place.

I also wonder how many final passes actually were completed by Japan.

Dreadful, absolutely dreadful. Same goes for Greece.
 
And it ends as a 0-0 draw.
 
That means Colombia are guaranteed through

As for the others:
Ivory Coast need to win to get through (or a draw, if Japan lose to Colombia)
Japan need a win to get through (and for Greece to win by 2 goals or less)
Greece need a win to get through (and for Japan to not win)

I've decide to remain irrational in the face of what we've seen so far and assume Japan will destroy Colombia and glide into the second round. :D

I think the biggest problem with England is a lack of passion. Starting with Hodgson, who always quietly sits in his chair and never gets up to give instructions and motivate his squad midway through the half, to the players, who look like soulless robots most of the time.

I don't know if this is the English school of football or just the current crop of players. But either way, if you don't play with your heart, no matter how much talent you have you won't succeed at this level, especially when you're up against fiery, emotional squads like Italy or Uruguay.
 
A few years ago we had some top English players leading PL clubs which were doing brilliantly in the CL, Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand, Terry, Ashley Cole, Carrick, Rooney, Carragher and now we have much less and our teams aren't doing aswell in the CL. I do however think we are playing better than we were 4 years ago and our qualification will come down to whether Uruguay can get something against Italy.
 
For anyone else who stayed awake, I actually thought the Japan 0-0 Greece game was very interesting to watch. Not just skills, goals and famous names, I appreciate good honest football and Greece gave a masterful demonstration of inching a game out when down to 10 men. They defended brilliantly and Karagounis in particular was outstanding.
 
Disappointing result for England but not unexpected. To add insult to injury, my mate organised a lads get-together to watch the game in the pub last night, but had to leave before kick-off because his house was broken into. Fortunately nothing was stolen - the intruders apparently found his old laptop and didn't bother taking it.

Italy now must win both of their other games otherwise England are toast.

The Italy game gave hope regardless of the loss. Costa Rica's win over Uruguay even more so, Suarez's knee injury further still.
We lost 2-1. What other team would do that?

Rooney was easily Englands best player last night for me and it was his best performance for them for ages, happy for him to get that first WC goal, must feel like a big weight of his shoulders...
 
Ray Wilkins has said that England should have been more physical with Luis Suarez and should have 'made a couple of tackles within the rules of the game to see if his knee was legit.' See you next Tuesday, Ray.
