Can someone please tell my why so many DNFs? Was there a huge wreck like in 2011?

Some were engine failures and some were contact with barriers. There wasn't a crash that involved more than one car other than Kimi and Ericsson in the hairpin.

Edit: I think it was Magnussen not Ericsson.

Bianchi was listed 9th in that official FIA graphic so I think that confirms it. He'd have been listed provisional 8th or 11th if they hadn't already done the penalty or given him a larger one. 9th confirms they only added on 5 seconds.

Lot of small ones, and a few mechanical problems like with Vettel
Nooo Vettel :(

Thankyou for the information :)

No geez, you can look this stuff up it comes out like right after the race finishes as well as in real time. There were several engine losses.
I slept through the race (:ouch:) and already checked the F1 app, and F1.com, thank you very much.

I'm pretty sure Bianchi faces a 20s or 30s time penalty for missing his stop-go, not just the 5s itself. If it's 30s that'd drop him to 12th and move Marcus Ericsson into 10th for Caterham...

Nope, they've already added on his 5 seconds which puts him 9th.

Lot of DNF is usual at Monaco. I remember a race (end of 80's I think) where we ended with no more than 6 cars on track.
I still get visions of that Lotus airborne on the backstretch a few years back,

Just saying it was impressive, had Hamilton started P1 it probably would have been a very different result.

Well yeah it would have, because Monaco is impossible to pass on, we saw this with Ham on Ros, and Ric on Ham. And unless you pull something like Kimi tried it just not going to happen and even then it's risky.

That's really weird...

Yeah this bit -

In the case of all three penalties, a driver has three laps from the time his team is notified in which to enter the pits. Failure to do so may result in a black flag and the driver being excluded from the race.

Is wrong. That isn't the case with this new 5 second penalty, they can take it any time. I think that is referring to the 'normal' 5 second S/G from last season.

Nor is this bit:

where the driver must not only enter the pits, but must also stop for five/ten seconds at his pit before rejoining the race. During this time the driver’s team are not permitted to work on the car or change the car’s tyres.

With this new penalty they can stop, serve the penalty then start work on the car.

 I like Kimis "Screw it I'm going in" attitude. :)

That page needs updating is all. It's not taking into account the new version of the penalty this season.

Or indeed not at all

Still, either way ends up with the first new team point, so hurrah.

Indeed. I guess in essence it really is just a 5 second time penalty that they can either take before a pit stop or added on the end of the race. Either way, it's a net 5 second penalty total, not more like the others.

The thought occurs there's also a Button/Perez incident being investigated, so we're not done with position rejigging just yet...

Edit: And a Magnussen/Raikkonen one?

That seems a mite unnecessary in all senses.

Well it doesn't seem to make sense why you're pushing the topic is all. I mean if we knew why the FIA says one thing and operates another way, we'd have a better answer for you. Just glad that Marussia have done this and I hope it helps gain them more funding. Also I feel it's probably somewhat safe to say they've pretty much wrapped it up in WCC against Caterham

Ricciardo was 1.5 seconds quicker a lap than Hamilton but couldn't pass him, well done to Hamilton for sticking to the back of Rosberg nearly all race and whilst using less fuel.
If you ever get the chance, watch the last 10 laps of the '92 Monaco race. Mansell was running away with the race & 45 seconds or so in the lead. He picks up a puncture, has to stop & that allows Senna into 1st. Mansell caught Senna at 3-4 seconds a lap & could do nothing about a pass due to clever car placement by Senna.

Bottom line: track position is king.

Monaco is unique as a modern F1 track & if the driver in front places his car strategically, he won't get passed.

Wonder if at this point both of those will be just grid penalties for Canada. If either one is a position drop (more thinking Magnussen than Button) then Caterham scores a point.

With the 5 second penalty for this year, it is not necessary to serve the penalty until their scheduled pitstop or if not scheduled to pit the 5 seconds get added after the race.

16.3 The stewards may impose any one of the penalties below on any driver involved in an Incident:
a) A five second time penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane, stop at his pit for at least five seconds and then re-join the race. The relevant driver may however elect not to stop, provided he carries out no further pit stop before the end of the race. In such cases five seconds will be added to the elapsed race time of the driver concerned.
b) A drive-through penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane and re-join the race without stopping.
c) A ten second time penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane, stop at his pit for at least ten seconds and then re-join the race.
If either of the three penalties above are imposed during the last three laps, or after the end of a race, Article 16.4b) below will not apply and five seconds will be added to the elapsed race time of the driver concerned in the case of a) above, 20 seconds in the case of b) and 30 seconds in the case of c).
d) A time penalty
e) A reprimand.

Well we know that, but I think @Samus made it more clear. I only saw the graphic, but did he refuse to S/G?

No he didn't refuse S/G they did it under safety car and the rules state you can't do that. Thus it is as if they didn't serve it because they took an easy route that pretty much makes the penalty void and obviously defeats the purpose of it. That's how it reads to me from everything I found after looking for it.

Ah. Well that's interesting... Lol
