With turbocharged engines, air density doesn't matter quite as much as with naturally aspirated ones. Aerodynamically, I'm guessing it might, but I don't know as much as I should about that. Someone more educated than I can chip in.

They would need to change how lean or rich the setup is to eliminate the lag that would occur due to thinner air, hence why these things become a bigger and bigger factor in hill climbs like Pikes.

Well, somebody has brought some upgrades, Hulkenberg in 4th is nearly 2 seconds off over a 1 minute 20 something lap with barely any corners.

Mercedes could just troll around and lap the field at this rate. Hamilton was half a second off his pole last season (but on the same tyres), so it'll be interesting to see the soft times.

Hamilton is dressed more like a pricked finger than ususal. Good lord.

Also pleasantly surprised that the FIA, in clearing Pirelli of any negligence re: Spa Tyres, said "they welcome any future recommendations". I should bleeding well think so! They're your tyre supplier; going against their advice is reckless and mortally dangerous.

Ugh, Lewis, you're from Stevenage. You're not a rapper.

Who says he's trying to be a rapper? It's a bit old that people take the wind out of him for every little thing he does because the media does it. This is his image and if he wishes to dye his hair blonde because he thinks it will give him double the WDC tally like his rival once dyed it, why not (seriously not the reason I'd guess). If he likes wearing that chain as he's done for the past few years...why not? It really seems that this is an authentic Lewis Hamilton and not some one that is controlled by Anthony Hamilton or Nicole Schezinger, which is good. The guy seems far more mature than seasons past and though some may still want to harp on his paddock looks and claim that it doesn't, how he chooses to look isn't indicative of who he fully is.

The guy is performing well and doing a better job at outing his weaknesses and going for broke to make sure he can win a third and perhaps more titles down the road before hanging up his helmet.

It looks like someone who's been moulded by Nicole Sherzinger. The tabloids are following him everywhere now that he's started dressing like an arse (and is allegedly dating Rihanna of course). He's never been one to keep his personal life to himself, but now he's dangling it in front of everybody as if he's some big Hollywood star, when really no-one would care if he didn't have connections to Sherzinger and Rihanna. The previous Hamilton, while still hot-headed (and probably less mature because this year he has much pretty much nothing to complain about), felt more genuine, and humble to me.

How? Because he has a style and image he's created, no one held a gun to his head and said be some Hollywood mogul. He just happens to like some of the people in the crowd and seems to have a mutual respect and understanding of their success similar to him, which is why him and Jay-Z have been seen together for example and so on, but that doesn't define Lewis. It doesn't make him forget who he is as an F1 driver.

And what's wrong with him not keeping his personal life to himself as you've said the tabloids follow him, it seems like too much work to have to pretend otherwise when they're just going to follow you and expose you. If people are going to find out about him he might as well do it himself and show the world who he is rather than be robotic and try to hide because some fans think F1 drivers should be a cut from the same. He likes his fans being involved(social media), likes having his own image to build on as someone who F1 will remember like other greats. I see a guy that is being who he feels most comfortable being and it doesn't seem like it's forced on him, just those who can't put up with it.

Well said 👍

Edit...

Not sure what people expect sometimes. The majority of teams/drivers we see and hear are decked out in full corporate entertainment garb and spout endless corporate PR drivel. LH wants to be an individual, with his style... we might not necessarily make a connection with that style, but at least he's not another 'robot'.

If the p1 standings is anything to go by, this will be a rather boring race for anyone that isn't a Lewis or Mercedes fan. A 1,6 second gap isn't exactly something you close over the weekend.

More penalties announced:
  • Kvyat: 15 places
  • Ricciardo: 25 places
  • Sainz: 10 places
  • Alonso: 10 places
  • Button: 10 places

How does the placement after penalties work? Lets assume that all 5 drivers qualify in positions that result in penalties that add up to position 20+. If Kvyat goes out and places 8th in quali and Sainz 13th, they are both nominally 22nd on the grid. Does Kvyat get the higher grid spot for a better time, or lower because more penalty?

Do you know how we know everything about Hollywood stars? Because of the media always swarming around them like flies on ... who insist on telling us about it repeatedly.

When you go out for dinner, paparazzi are there. When you go out on your bicycle, paparazzi are there. When you go to take a poop, paparazzi are there. Every time they will be snapping hundreds of photos and exaggeratingly documenting every little thing that happens. You can't escape them, so why bother hiding from them? Do people go around in public vocally criticizing each individual who has dyed their hair, wears some jewelry, wears different clothing, enjoys certain company...? No. It's the cool thing to hate and/or criticize those in the media just because.

I say let the people live their lives however they want, like every other 'normal' individual does, as long as they are not harming anybody.

They still sort by highest qualified I believe.

True, the race behind though seems like it will be pretty scrappy.

FP1 people. Testing and development. The two drivers in each team will be running different work loads and each team is doing their own thing. Times in this session are irrelevant.

An "abnormality" with Button's McLaren. With the way that team has been this season, that could be anything.

They apply the penalties in the order that they are given. So if McLaren change Button's engine at 10:00am and Alonso's engine at 11:00am, then Button will be demoted down the grid (probably all the way to the back) and then Alonso is demoted (probably now taking the back of the grid slot from Button, promoting him to 19th in the process).

Verstappen just spun and backed into the gravel trap at Asari, then just managed to drive out like it was grass. Lucky boy.

He nearly hit the barrier as it rolled backwards. Him not locking the wheels up is most likely the thing that allowed him to drive out of the gravel.

The Mercs will walk this, but looking forward to Ferrari trying a crazy strategy call to make an effort infront of the tifosi but Ferrari are not enough Rapido
