Just to bring back up the fan vote thing, do you think they would have selected two fan votes if Danica Patrick wasn't 2nd in that?

If the All Star is any indication, Logano, Larson, BK, and maybe Jr. will be serious players in the 600. Penske was on point all night and Larson has been on fire for the past few weeks. Jr. was hanging around most of the night too, but with how dominant the Penske cars and Larson were, Jr. looks to be a longshot.

Larry, no... just no

The format isn't that bad, it's the fact that NASCAR boned everyone by not having a wave around at the end of Segment 1, if half the field is on old tires in front and half are on new tires in back, it's gonna be fun to watch. I say keep it next year but make everyone on the lead lap at the end of each segment

The irony of this is that Dollar General (or atleast the one I went to during an RC race) feels like one of the most "NASCAR" stores I've ever been in. I guess they either needed a change, or the Brian France-ness got to them.

There's new management at the top of the company this year. Youd be surprised how big of a difference it makes if the people running the company are fans or not.

Edit: and I have nothing against the all star format. The whole ****ery was due to the 20 team not pitting and the 1 car spinning at the very end. NASCAR should have just waved around the lapped cars, and not scored them so they would still be a lap down then just restart the race as normal.

Ah, that'll do it. Here's hoping they go to the NHRA or GRC or something

The goal is to always have at least 20 cars in the field. With only fifteen drivers eligible based on the existing criteria, they needed to add five drivers from the open race.

In years past, they have usually needed to add less drivers. Had Jeff Gordon not retired, we would have probably had one less segment winner, or only one fan vote winner.

And it looks like that'll be happening again with Stewart retiring.

Next race for Cup is the Coca-Cola 600, which I often call NASCAR's version of Le Mans. Only that there are no driver changes, racing in the rain, the race not lasting THAT long, and not on a road course. There is a certain strategy to running a 500-mile race while also lasting 100 extra miles. You can really think of it like NASCAR's version of the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. You have to play this race strategically going from late afternoon to evening and eventually night. It is an endurance race. You can race 500 miles, but can you do an extra 100 miles on top of that 500 on one of NASCAR's finest tracks?

I know this is the NASCAR thread, but Memorial Day weekend is perhaps the best weekend to be a racing fan with marquee races like F1 at Monaco and the Indy 500. That's breakfast and dinner for us fans in the Western Hemisphere. The Coca-Cola 600 is a darned good dinner for a racing fan. Go enjoy this weekend to the fullest with races such as the Coca-Cola 600.

It's a good thing McMurray qualified as a past All-Star Race winner from the past 10 seasons (2014), or we would have needed six drivers to add this year.

I think next year will be better as guys like Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney are bound to start winning soon. HMS and The Wood Brothers (via Penske) are just too good to not be winning races, even with talented, but raw, rookie drivers.

Even Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson should win a race here and there, despite being at lesser teams (RCR & Ganassi).

Hell, Clint Bowyer might be able to get back to his winning ways once he gets out of HScott and into an actual Sprint Cup level race car next year.

Sadly I'm going to have to listen to the Coke 600 on the radio seeing as I'll be camping in Indianapolis. Which means I'm going to miss all the cool paint schemes in action.

I remember back in the day when only 1 driver got in via the Open. One chance. No fan vote.

Also I don't necessarily think the format was that bad this year. NASCAR royally screwed the pooch by putting half the field a lap down. If they wanted to be fair, they should have waved them around and let 'em pit with the others. At worst, wave them around and have them pit amongst each other, with those who were already on the lead lap staying ahead of them, regardless if they got beat out of the pits or not. It would have made the third segment the way it was intended. Of course, another downside of the format would have been if there was a large wreck taking out a good chunk of the field before the final segment. There would have been a similar scenario with only a couple of cars on old tires. Who knows though. They change it every year anyway.

To be honest, I would have done the format like this:

Sprint Open:

Segment 1: 20 laps (Winner gets into the main event)
Segment 2: 10 lap sprint (Winner gets into main event)
One fan vote winner.

Main Event:

Segment 1: 50 laps (1 mandatory pit stop before lap 35) Drivers 15th and below or a lap down are eliminated.
Segment 2: 25 laps (Inversion of the field. Mandatory 2 tire stop before lap 10) Top 10 advance to the final segment.
Segment 3: 10 laps (10 drivers + 10 laps = $1 million. Gets no simpler than this.)

Any scheme that calls back to Steve Park is a good scheme in my opinion

I smell Scott Dixon scheme 👍

I'm kind of surprised that it's a "Thunderbolt" Target car because of Charlie Kimball's Novo Nordisk Indycar running Larson's number in the Indy 500... But this might look good.

I smell JPM Indy 500 shoutout...
Fun fact: he actually ran that scheme in both series. And came close to winning both races with this scheme. So cool that they're bringing it back...on the most powerful weekend in motorsports.

From Jayski...
Cup crew member suspended 2nd time for violating substance abuse policy: A crew member in the Sprint Cup Series has been indefinitely suspended a second time in his career for violation of NASCAR's substance abuse policy. Kelly Johnson, who most recently worked as a jackman with Tommy Baldwin Racing (#7 Chevy), was indefinitely suspended Tuesday for violation of NASCAR's substance abuse policy. It's his second violation in less than two years. Johnson was indefinitely suspended for violation of the policy in November 2014 and reinstated in January 2015 after completing NASCAR's Road to Recovery program. (Motorsport)(5-25-2016)
