Wow.. That's tragic, I don't know what to say, wow... RIP Dan.

They should really take these monsters out of the ovals and on proper road courses only (excluding Indy).

:(

The problem isn't ovals in general, it's ovals that are designed for stock cars which are slower.

Really is bad taste for ABC to keep showing the replay.:yuck:

I've always felt like these cars were way to fast for oval racing.

ABC was handling it just fine for a while there, but now they are back to showing it again. :/ It's on Youtube if people want to see it.

I am having a very hard time holding back my tears right now. I just can't believe it. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch another race again, I just witnessed someone lose their life in a crash and its never going to leave me.

I watched Senna die as well. Even if it was on his own, it was the most important event to make me look at racing incidents in a different way.

I didn't see Senna die but I did see Dale Earnhardt die and now sadly via replays I have seen Dan Wheldon die. This is a terrible day for all of motorsports.

They should just take Indy Cars off of the mile and a half tracks. Put them back on the 1 mile ovals, and make them slower in the corners.

Didn't realize there were 34 cars in this race. How did ICS management let this happen? I thought the cap for the field was 26 except for the traditional 33 at Indy.

So heart breaking for a series that wanted to celebrate so much. --- Randy

That was the first time I have seen anyone die in a race car before. Seeing his head and body controlling his car on the ABC feed mere seconds before he met his fate sent chills up my spine for almost 30 minutes, it just reminds you how fragile and precious life is. I pray that he didn't suffer. Rest in peace, Dan. May you be remembered and missed.

:(

I couldn't watch the replays on ABC, we will all miss you Dan. I watched you win your final race. God Speed

On a day that there would have been the crowning of the series champion and rookie of the year and the celebrations for them.....

There are no winners.

Indeed - the BBC have a policy of not showing replays of accidents until they know a driver is okay. I didn't even know about it until Felipe Massa's accident in Hungary; I was following it on the F1 Fanatic live blog and everyone was demanding a replay of it. Not showing a replay of an accident is a good policy, one that every broadcaster should adopt.

Especially in this day and age with replay's and slo-mo's from every angle. They really should show more responsibility when someone's life is in question.

I'm very sad over the terrible accident which just took the life of Dan Wheldon. In my opinion, he was one of the greatest drivers ever to race at the Indy 500. His record speaks for itself. He was extremely fun to listen to and watch as an announcer on the VERSUS coverage of Indy car racing earlier in the year. No more positive, cheerful, and skillful driver existed in the realm of Indy car oval racing. I will miss him, as I have so many since I cried a river of tears when my boyhood hero Jim Clark was killed in the trees at Hockenheim.

Wheldon's accident was unsurvivable since he went open cockpit into the catchfence. Did anyone review the tapes enough to tell at this time exactly what happened which led up to this fatal impact?

Respectfully,
Steve

"Many people ask me why I always sign off with 'Till we meet again.' Because goodbye is always so final. Goodbye, Dan Wheldon."
- Marty Reid

I can't put it into words, really. Indescribable.

Given how quickly they showed the first replay, I suspect ABC had no idea Wheldon's life was in the balance. There were so many cars involved that it would have taken information a long time to trickle down, especially since the on-board camera (which I just saw on the morning news) showed that Wheldon didn't appear to be injured at all. He kind of launched off the car in front, rolled slightly in mid-air, and hit the outer wall at an angle. It was a big hit, but he didn't appear to be in any immediate danger because the survival cell of the car did its job.

To ABC's credit, they focused on the cars and drivers who escaped relatively unscathed - the first person they showed was Townsend Bell, who coasted to a halt on the opposite side of the circuit and was able to climb out of the car.

There has to be a better safety system than metal catch fences about the exterior track walls. Especially at tracks that hold races for open wheel series. There's always a slight chance that a crash like this could occur, as it has before. Last one I can remember is Kenny Brack's horrific crash at Texas about a decade ago.

This is so unbelievable. I had the same feeling when I was watching the CART race the Greg Moore passed away in.

Dan will be missed. He is for sure on my list of great drivers
