Other way around, Montoya wins by 4. Dixon was 4th and 1st in double points races, JPM 1st and 6th; Dixon loses more points.
Wait, how does Dixon lose when he finished 4th at Indy and Montoya finished 6th at Sonoma? I'm pretty sure 4th place pays more points than 6th place regardless of double points.

Does anyone want to do the math with a spreadsheet program to see how the championship race would've ended without double points for the Indy 500 and Sonoma GP?

It'd also be nice to see how it would've ended with double points only for the triple crown races (Indy 500, California 500, Pocono 500). I at least agree with awarding double points for the longest races of the season.

And just for fun, why not calculate it using the old CART IndyCar World Series points system?

Thanks in advance!

By the way, for those complaining about double points, Montoya got the benefits of double points from Indy. Take double points away from Indy and Sonoma, Dixon's still champion, 482 to Montoya having 478.
Except that Indy is the only event that actually deserves to have double points. There's absolutely nothing special or significant about Sonoma that makes it worthy of those. Let's face it, this was IndyCar trying to mimic the outrageously horrible F1 idea of increasing the value of the season finale no matter what track it's on.

I think the thing here is that people just like Dixon more so the stupidity of the double points finale is getting glossed over.

I don't think that double points are really the issue here. JPM made a mistake, as did Power. Due to that, he would have lost the championship either way.

Double points add to the excitement of a good finish. Why knock it for making things more interesting?

Quoted from Autosport:

WHAT DIFFERENCE DID DOUBLE POINTS MAKE?

Actual championship standings:

1 Dixon 556
2 Montoya 556
3 Power 493
4 Rahal 490
5 Castroneves 453
6 Hunter-Reay 436

Montoya's assertion that Dixon benefited from the Sonoma double score is correct, as the Colombian would have held on to his championship lead otherwise.

Standings without double score for Sonoma:

1 Montoya 528
2 Dixon 506
3 Rahal 478
4 Power 467
5 Castroneves 438
6 Newgarden 422

Montoya himself benefited from double points when he won the Indianapolis 500. Removing that advantage brings Dixon closer, but Montoya hangs on.

Standings with no double scores at all:

1 Montoya 478
2 Dixon 474
3 Rahal 448
4 Power 426
5 Castroneves 412
6 Newgarden 399

Source.

Dixon 3 wins, 2 poles, 7 top 5's, 12 top 10's, 306 laps led
Juan 2 wins, 0 poles, 9 top 5's, 13 top 10's, 145 laps led

"Dixon had a 🤬 season all year and had one good race, and we paid the penalty."

I have always been a fan of JPM since his rookie year but he is wrong and it was his mistake of not lifting when Will chopped him that cost him the title.

Yeah, he is wrong but he also had just lost the championship and emotions were running high.

I have felt since the beginning of the year that Montoya was hanging on just because he did well at the beginning. On that level, I am not at all upset that Dixon won.

Maybe next year, JPM can win legitimately. We shall see.

I said it on Twitter, so I'll say it here. I want to see Aleshin and Simona back in IndyCar. They deserve to be here

Wasn't she a paying driver?

She's getting paid to drive a V8 supercar this year at Bathurst,

She had massive sponsorship until Sauber F1 happened. Even now, she has pretty good sponsorship. Andretti is hurting that bad apparently.

Well Dale Coyne always seems broke, why not take the money to where its appreciated?

That would be like stepping back to HVM. It's an idea, but likely one that would be last resort.

That maybe, but Coyne seems to be getting some good people working on those cars now, and after Connor Daly took it for a spin around Long Beach those cars haven't been way off as usual, so the right money, and right driver could see those cars further up the grid,

Question the concept of double point races? That's a valid argument but even so, JPM and Penske knew the rules of the game when the season started. Don't want to lose a potential championship at Sonoma, build up a larger championship lead or have dominant cars at Sonoma.

Just caught the race replay. Bourdais is a clown. Punting Rahal square in the hairpin and then proceeding to cut the chicane multiple times after that.

Would have been nice to see Rahal claim the championship but I guess the French had other plans. 👎

Rahal admitted that he wasn't having a very good day before that, but that punt did cost him 3rd in the championship. It was pretty satisfying to hear Rahal tell Bourdais that he was "driving like a 🤬", though.

Yeah, was something amiss with the handling of the car.

I'm not even bothered by Dixon winning his 4th championship. He did exactly what he needed to do to win the title, even if it came from some help of the Penske team screwing themselves out of it after having it for 98% of the season.

And Bourdais... he cuts the chicane, race control immediately calls for a drive-through and he does the same thing on that very lap. They should have parked him for a minute instead of the drive-through.

The commentators said that he looked a bit out of control, though, so I won't say that he cut the chicane COMPLETELY on purpose.

Once is understandable, twice in a row isn't. On top of that he punted Rahal right in the back which is completely inexcusable contact. If he had any issues he should have been slowing down sooner to avoid them.

Kinda interesting when you consider that earlier in the year, the place was ALL sold out for the Cup race (or was that the Glen?)
