Yeah, I think Danica Patrick placed 15th in a test session at Homestead. 16th fastest was... the Venezuelan femme Milka Duno. Speaking of Danica, I think now is the time she tries to win some more races to really establish herself. She got her first win at Motegi last year in that historic weekend. Now she needs some more wins to build confidence and maybe play the dark horse role for a championship. I'll be pulling for Danica Patrick all this season. Maybe not to win the championship (she's not there yet), but to win and consistently finish high.

During an interview following the first open test at Homestead-Miami that aired on Speed TV's Speed Report last night:

"It was pretty encouraging and I think in six weeks time it's going to look a lot different to what it is now. So it was pretty encouraging and I was quicker than Chip's *second car, so he'll be really happy about that one. :D "

- Dan "The Weasel" Weldon

* For those few who may not know, Weldon lost his seat in that car to returning former champion Dario Franchitti

The only problem with his comment was that he was actually slower than both of Chip's cars. Dan needs a new watch and attitude. ;)

One of a few reasons why Ganassi let Wheldon walk instead of extending his contract.

Here are some pictures of the 2009 Homestead-Miami Open Test @ Homestead-Miami Speedway. You may notice a new piece of bodywork on top of each sidepod. I believe those are the new standard mufflers. Based on the video I've seen of the test, the mufflers make the current naturally-aspirated IndyCars sound more like past turbocharged IndyCars.

So it looks like nobody plans on giving Paul Tracy a seat. It really grinds my gears to see Milka Duno with an outfit like NHL while Tracy is out of the sport.

Last year's re-united IndyCar Series featured great competition. The future is looking brighter with the IndyCar Series moving towards an even 50/50 mix of oval and road/street racing. More powerful turbocharged engines for the next generation IndyCar. If the economy recovers sooner rather than later, the next generation IndyCar will debut in 2011. Dallara will build the chassis which will hopefully be powered by turbocharged Honda, VW, and Fiat engines. Note that VW and Fiat haven't settled on which brand they will promote. Personally, I'm hoping VW chooses to promote Porsche and Fiat chooses to promote Ferrari in the 2011 IndyCar Series. If all goes well, the 2011 IndyCar Series will be like the CART IndyCar World Series of the early 1990s.
I'm hoping we not only see a variety of engines, but a variety of chassis as well to chose from. Maybe Panoz would be willing to have another go with an open-wheeled model? And how about Ford trying a comeback with their Cosworth engines? :)

Graham Rahal now has the equipment I'm anxious to see if he can provide the results

Graham was with the same team he was with last year, different paint scheme (yay sponsors), but still N/H/L racing.

I don't know, that's like saying Christain Fittipaldi had the same car as Michael Andretti when they raced at Newman Haas or 88 and 5 have cars just as good as the 24 and 48 in NASCAR.

He is the team leader now, #1

My thoughts and prayers go out to him, his friends, his family, and all who have known and loved him. How will you remember Lloyd Ruby? by the way, speaking as a native Texan, it's sad to see one of my fellow Texans (he's from Wichita Falls, TX) pass away.

True.

Seeing red

The digital clock displays 3 minutes left in the Firestone Fast Six session. There's a point for the pole and a sizable check awaiting the winner of the 10-minute shootout - the culmination of three knockout rounds of qualifications. Ryan Briscoe is third - a split-second behind - on the lap time chart. OK, time to break out the reds?

That's a no-brainer to the Team Penske driver.

"You need to put on what's going to be fastest," says Briscoe, the only driver to earn a spot in all six Firestone Fast Six sessions in 2008. "You want the pole and want that point. That's what qualifying is all about."

Utilizing Firestone Racing's alternate tire concept might get him - or anyone -- to the top. The red-sidewall Firehawks are identical in construction to the primary racing slicks, but feature a softer tread compound that yields more grip for ostensibly quicker overall lap times. The program makes its IndyCar Series debut at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg April 3-5.

Three sets of the reds will be provided per car, with each team required to use at least one sticker set for at least two green flag laps in the seven road/street course races. Their use in the three knockout rounds of qualifications on road/street courses is a team option. Teams are allowed to use the reds in practice sessions, providing they reserve a sticker set for the race.

"A softer tire has more grip, but they go away quicker," Andretti Green Racing veteran Tony Kanaan says. "We add another thing to the rule. Our races are so competitive already; this will make it even better."

It will be a fine line for teams in determining when to implement the alternate tire plan and its duration -- early in the race for a potentially quick advantage, the final pit stop if they're in contention for the victory or both? Bridgestone Americas Motorsports pioneered the alternate tire concept and introduced it to competition at the 2004 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

"I think it adds a whole different level of competition to the sport, because it's so different - a lot of times the engineering is a lot different," says Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing's Graham Rahal, who rode on the reds in the 2007 Champ Car season. "For instance, in the Champ Car the handling was completely different from the reds to the blacks. It's a completely different car, completely different series. It's going to be a new challenge."

In addition to black, red and rain tires for the seven road/street course events, Firestone Racing is charged with continued development and delivery of tires for the variety of ovals on the schedule.

"It's quite a task to develop, test and approve for use a second Firestone Firehawk tire compound for seven very different racetracks," said Al Speyer, Firestone Racing's Executive Director. "But we believe, and many agree, that the alternate tires will contribute another element of excitement to IndyCar Series racing.

"The alternate tire program also gives us another forum in which we can develop and implement new tire technologies that we hope someday will improve the performance of our company's world-class street tires. Using racing to develop better passenger tires continues to be an important element of Firestone Racing's IndyCar Series program."
Thank you IRL and Firestone for bringing back Champ Car's red tires!

Wow... the option tire deal is going to be VERY interesting. I still fancy the sweet Champ Car sounds from ten years ago (when I first started following (then) CART), but that's a nice crossover from Champ Car. If they do try out turbo cars, I wonder if Push to Pass makes a comeback.

Before all of this, I've still fancied the Panoz DP-01 as a crossover into IndyCar.

^ here's the exact quote I posted on YouTube:

"Let me tell you something. Barber Motorsports is one of the most beautiful tracks in the United States. It's a European-style race course deep in Alabama (actually not extremely far from Talladega). I wish more series here and internationally should race at Barber Motorsports Park. A rumor I heard was that the IndyCar Series COULD race at Barber Motorsports Park as a championship race in the future. And really, I'd LOVE to see that happen because this is a wonderful track." -by "JohnMarineTube" (me)

Word has it that it COULD become a future championship round. So if you want to see great racing in Alabama, you can either go to Talladega... or you can go see action at Barber Motorsports Park.

So what do you think we'll be seeing next?

Maybe standing starts for non-oval races? :D;)

So I was reading MyNameIsIRL yesterday, and there was a story on there that Ryan Hunter-Reay supposedly having signed a deal with Vision Racing to race this year and that we may see Tomas Scheckter racing as well.

This makes Robin Miller happy to see Ryan Hunter-Reay return. I respect fellow Texan (a Dallas boy) Ryan Hunter-Reay. Also would be great to see the South African Tomas Scheckter return as well.

But I'm most happy to see Ryan Hunter-Reay return.

Congrats to Ryan Briscoe, but that was a terrible whack Danica Patrick took. She's tough. Just have to make ready for the first Long Beach Grand Prix with the unified IndyCar Series. We're almost coming up on the one year anniversary of Danica's first win. I didn't see all of the race, but I did like hearing Bob Jenkins call down the action, though I'm not really a Bob Jenkins fanatic.

I was rooting for Ryan Hunter-Rhey during the last few laps. Briscoe did a good job holding him off though. As for the incident with Danica, I didn't relize she was involved with Matos until they showed it. I only saw Mato's car at first, but in the replay that was a really hard hit. I think I saw the Fence collapsing inward.

Yeah, Bob Jenkins is cool. I would love it if Paul Page and him did commentating together on these races.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes-Benz to IndyCar Series?

Given the fact that both reigning Formula 1 Drivers Champion Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes-Benz have threatened to quit F1 over the FIA's over-zealousness to punish them, Team Penske and the IRL needs to go after both Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes-Benz ASAP.

Team Penske has the best shot of signing Lewis Hamilton because Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon which already sponsors Penske's IndyCars and NASCAR stock cars. If Vodafone/Verizon throws in a few extra million, I can definitely see The Captain running 4 cars with Castroneves (if cleared), Briscoe, Power, and Hamilton. Team Penske is also Mercedes-Benz's former IndyCar factory team. They could be Mercedes-Benz' factory team again if Mercedes-Benz decides to build IndyCar engines again.

Let's make it happen!

You can never rule out any possibilities as far as Hamilton coming here to the states to race Indy cars.Penske does have some pull.It would be cool to see, only time will tell.
