Is this just as bad as when they went to Texas the first time and had to abort or is this worse?

This is worse. Almost the entire field was packed up like it was a NASCAR restrictor plate race.

When they did testing, Dario said the track wasn't going to be good for the cars and it was going to be potentially dangerous.

Was it CART in 2001 when they went to Texas and ran 15 laps in a test, and Michael Andretti was getting vertigo?

I just don't understand the complexities of the Indy Car they use at all. I wish I did. I would assume that the track, which I believe has been used before for Indy Car, wouldn't have brought such a problem.

It was Texas. I didn't remember if it was ICRS or CART.

Taking a long time to get Dan Wheldon's condition, but confirmed he was taken to the hospital.

Wheldon airlifted, JR Hildebrand and Pippa Mann taken to hospital via ambulance.

Its not just the car or the track per se.

Its a combination of the track being too short, the cars being open wheel and doing 230mph, a big field of cars consisting of several rookies or drivers that don't run very often and finally the fact that a lot of these drivers were already taking risks driving close to each other. The exact same accident almost happened with Tagliani and Briscoe a few moments earlier.

Basically the problem is the pack consisting of lots of cars, bunched together on a relatively tight and narrow oval track. Its a recipe for disaster for any type of car, but for open wheel cars its even more worrying due to the obvious risks with the drivers being more exposed and the wheels launching the cars.

Not surprised Pippa is getting further evaluation. She looked a bit out of it when she got out of the car.

I don't think I've ever seen such a violent accident in all of racing. I believe about four or five cars got airborne and slammed the catch fence. Another three or four cars caught fire, and Dan's was massively destroyed. I hope he's okay.

Looks like there's a drivers meeting going one with officials. Probably to determine if this race should be resumed or not.

There is a report (I am NOT sure if it is true), that Dan Wheldon has been decapitated. I have no idea how that would be deduced or how anyone would know that.

Lets not speculate and wait for news.

Somebody posted this on fb:
‎@Ashley Judd "Thanks everyone for prayers. No update on Dan yet except unconscious but vitals are good. Everyone here very scared. Pray for medical team."

Lets hope its true

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have bothered to air lift him to a hospital if that was so.
