Im happy for Barrichello. Remember, Nigel Mansell was 39, the same age as Barrichello, when he won the Indycar championship.

A championship is a long shot as his equipment isnt top tier, but a race win or two from pure speed is possible with the pace hes shown so far

Agree; I mean this guy drove for Ferrari at the height of their powers in F1. He's no slouch.

Today's cars are much faster through the turns but slower down the straights, as confirmed by Mario Andretti when he drove Indianapolis again in 2003.
Today's IndyCar isn't the old 2003 IndyCar so why would you even bring that up? Chevy, Honda, and Lotus haven't even finalized their engine specs yet, and teams aren't going to practice at Indy until May. No team is going to risk wrecking their brand new cars and blowing up engines pushing max speeds in March when they have 4 road/street races before the Indy 500 in May.

The sweet spot in age for a racing driver is 25-35 years old. That is even true in motorsports like NASCAR that may not be as physically demanding as others. Take a look at it, you will see all the greats achieved most of their success and dominance in that age bracket.
The ages of last year's IndyCar race winners: Dario Franchitti (38), Dan Wheldon (33), Will Power (31), Scott Dixon (31), Ryan Hunter-Reay (31), Ed Carpenter (31), Mike Conway (28), Marco Andretti (25). Why did you even say that IndyCar is full of "washed up has been drivers in their late 30s" when 7 out of those 8 race winners were 31 years old or younger? If you're going to criticize IndyCar, then at least get your facts straight.

The problem is none of those drivers really have a car capable of contending for the win. Allmendinger got a ride with Forsythe that allowed him to shine and challenge Bourdais. Its a shame a driver of Graham Rahal's talent is stuck in subpar equipment. Andretti-Green (Is Green still part of it?) hasn't had competitive cars in years.
Graham Rahal races for Chip Ganassi Racing. The same Chip Ganassi Racing that won 4 straight IndyCar Championships from 2008 - 2011. I don't think they won 4 straight championships with subpar equipment.

And Andretti-Green Racing is now Andretti Autosport. And they won 3 races last year with Mike Conway, Marco Andretti, and Ryan Hunter-Reay. This year, James Hinchcliffe (2011 IZOD IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year) will race alongside Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay. Looks like a competitive team to me. Again, please get your facts straight.

The current 2012 schedule does look very good. A nice mix of ovals and roadcourses. If they add Road America and Portland to the schedule along with St Louis Gateway oval or Twin Ring Motegi it would be near perfect.
Agreed. I'd love to see those 4 tracks back on the IndyCar schedule.

I'm going to have to wait to see the cars in action on track in race conditions before I judge the DW12. It looks something like the NASCAR COTs looked in their first season, boxy and ugly, but hopefully like the changes NASCAR made, with the help of aero kits etc, the cars can start to look better over time.
I really hope you do watch the races this year. I personally think the DW12 looks way better than the old car, and I too am looking forward to next year's aero kits. A word of advice, try closing your eyes and listening to the sounds of the new turbocharged engines. It will bring back memories of the CART IndyCar World Series.

Well, I stand corrected.

With the new car and addition of Barrichello, I will follow this year's Indycar season much closer then in recent years.

The first layout of the Qingdao street circuit has been released, and it's a doozy. And not in a good way, either:

It could be even worse - it's 6.2km long, which means the straights around the perimeter are going to be flat out and at leat two of them (on the north and east sides) are going to be a kilometre long. A quick check on Google Maps shows that the circuit is run around the Qingdao Zhongneng FC football stadium, and the perimeter roads are all about eight lanes wide, but I don't think that's going to be enough run-off. So I would not be surprised at all if Baltimore-style chicanes are inserted into revised designs.

Seems like they just wanted it to go by the stadium and that clam shell thing than just hit "Auto-Complete".

Designs like that are what makes people hate street courses.:yuck:

Practise underway. Very neat that we have a track map with real-time positioning of the cars.
You can check it here: http://racecontrol.indycar.com/

PS - Off topic but the F1 2012 iphone app isn't free anymore, greedy buggers spoiled that one also :grumpy: Farewell, live timing on the go, I'll stick to the ESPNF1 iphone app this year. Quite cool.

I'm surprised to see Barrichello struggle so far. I'm chalking that one down as being unfamiliar with the track.

Last year's pole time was a 1'01.9, they are just above that, disappointing a bit to me, I had hoped the cars would be much quicker then the old dog Dallara

Noticed Barrichello was down the time sheet. Most likely is due to not knowing the course.

1.3 seconds isn't that much of a gap on a street circuit though. It would be different if it was that large of a gap on anoval.

I don't see Rubens being competitive until Detroit probably, just him needing time to assimilate really.

Lotus however, is cause for concern.:nervous:

Oil leak in the first session and an unidentified mechanical problem in the second session.
Bumpy street track + brand new engine manufacturer = reliability trouble.

Probably a dumb question but 1) What time is the race UK time? :)
and 2) Is it on the Sky Sports F1 channel? :)

Except that by Sunday the UK is no longer on GMT but on GMT+1 for daylight savings, so for the UK the race starts at 17.30pm.

And yes its being shown on the Sky F1 channel.

5:30PM (I think)

Couldn't tell ya. I don't think you have ABC.

Aw man that's awesome! I didn't realise Sky F1 were covering IndyCar, this has made my day!

EDIT: Just did some digging and looks like they're not planning on broadcasting any further races. Hope they change their minds.

Although actually, their website shows broadcasting dates for other upcoming IndyCar races and it looks like they'll be live judging by the GMT times.

APRIL 2012
Sun 1 - Honda Grand Prix of Alabama - 8.00pm
Sun 15 - Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach - 9.00pm
Sun 29 - Sao Paulo Indy -5.00pm

All on either Sky Sports 2 or 4.

Christ, these cars are ugly. Tagliani's Barracuda car isn't bad, and I do like the Fuzzy's livery, but the actual cars themselves are hideous. 2013 and the customer aero packages can't come soon enough.

Wasn't aware of those problems, hopefully they get them sorted out, I'm not really cheering for them but the more cars contending for the win the better.

!!:grumpy:. How come every driver I root for is constantly sabotaged lol..
First Kubica(out of f1...)....then Raikkonen gearbox. now Pagenaud engine.
I think I am bad luck....MAybe I should start rooting for some other drivers out there :trouble:

I hope he runs well in the race.

prisonermonkeys
Start cheering for Bruno Senna, then. And Sebastian Vettel.

Don't forget Franchitti and Power.
