Yeah forcing the bodywork is dumb, they should allow stock bodywork as well so if a manufacturer doesn't want to break the bank, they can just stuff an engine in a stock LMP2. Hopefully this won't ruin the class before it even starts.http://www.racer.com/more/viewpoint...ing-the-veil-on-imsa-s-2017-p2-class?showall=
I think that IMSA is dropping the ball here with mandating the requirement that manufacturers have to produce the custom bodywork in order to have their engines in the class. Adding that cost to the fee they have to pay just to race is silly.
I would find it much more sensible to at least open the door for cars to run the generic bodywork in lieu of the manufacturer bodywork, and instead restrict to each engine to a single chassis at least (I.E. You can only run the Cadillac engine in a Dallara, with or without the bodywork). But straight up saying that you have to have custom bodywork to run really kills the potential for this class to shine.
Course that was just entry fees to allow selling of GT3's, the ransom I mean.I think much like the GTD class this year it's a little too early to make a call on the future of the class.
This is a regulation thing, but it may indeed turn out the same yes.
Admittedly I'm trying to be glass half full about racing since lately the sanctioning bodies of pretty much every series have lost their collective minds.
Caution Clocks. That's something to worry about since the France family does indeed have a hand in IMSA. I fear that sooner or later they will get their stupidity in NASCAR to transfer over to IMSA events. Hopefully, smarter heads prevail as they currently are, but since NASCAR is going to hell.....

I love the idea of just calling up Ferrari or Porsche and ordering a GT3 engine to stick in a new P2 car but the reality is this isnt the Gas Monkey garage. Without a OEM's support and $$$ a team would go broke trying to make it work. The variety of the GT3 engine field is great but that variety will also be a huge headache trying to make it work because there is no standard spec. The only two cars that share anything alike are the Audi and Lambo which share the same V10, everybody else uses a different engine package and none of them were designed to fit into the back of a Oreca 05.
MP makes a point about the option of using a Judd,HPD,or Nissan now and the only restriction is your wallet but he missed the fact that the new spec P2 cars are being designed with one engine in mind, the Gibson V8.
The strangest thing about the OEM body/engine deal is if they want to go to Le Mans they will be allowed but have to switch back to the original bodywork so the engineers better make sure they plan ahead and make sure the car will not melt down running stock side pods. My guess is that once the rules are announced there will be a option for the OEM's to run w/o the body kits if they choose to.
To go to Le Mans, Dont the teams have to run the Gibson power plant as well?
Easy there freedom fries. No but it will likely be BOP'd in quite the negative fashion.
I'm sorry but that reminded me of this.Easy there freedom fries.![]()
I'm sure it'll be the same in the states, can't have a generic spec car beating the Manufacturers we're so desperate to have.Easy there freedom fries.![]()
At least all of the races are live this year and not tape delayedTV info. http://sportscar365.com/imsa/ctscc/fox-sports-iwsc-ctsc-broadcast-schedules-released/
All Gibson powered P2's have to run the stock chassis designed bodywork (FIA spec), but the Elms will allow Imsa spec engines to race in P2 but only in the stock bodywork (FIA spec).
We need a chart to keep track of this stuff...
Probably about the only piece of good news. ;_;At least all of the races are live this year and not tape delayed.
It all depends on when the race is aired and what was on before or after the race. For example, the Formula E Putrajaya race only had 60,000 viewers on FOX when aired live early in the morning, but when it was shown tape delayed on FOX after an NFL game, it got a 1.2 overnight rating (over a million people watched).I am curious to see how much of an improvement the ratings would be if they were shown on Fox instead of FS1 and FS2. I doubt that it would be much (and it wouldn't happen anyway because Fox), but there is a chance that they would be higher in theory because more people have access to the regular channels.
Worst Viper ever.
I can't believe how different it is from last year. Last year's grid was amazing, and now look at it.At least you'll be able to pick that out quickly. Sad to see the CTSCC roster look so slim...hope that's just due to missing the first race. We went from 60+ to 30+. Not surprising to see the Cayman take over half of GS and most of ST...not much manufacturer diversity. Also sad to see one Multimatic mustang instead of two...
They really culled that field unless some folks are just too late to enter...damn. My favourite series too.
