I think since Speed Channel's demise, I haven't really followed many different racing series as I used to. So I can't say I've had the same level of anticipation to view and follow racing events as I used to. It hasn't dulled my interest in various motorsports, though. I still will watch the USCR regardless. Maybe I'll have to follow more with streaming media and social media. That's probably the way of the world now.
Since Speed's demise, NBCSN and CBS Sports Network have definitely picked up the slack. I don't have MAV TV, but even that has picked up a bit of the motorsports TV slack for those of us still watching cable and satellite TV rather than exclusively turn to streaming and social media. It can sometimes be scheduling or television commits that can ruin the appeal of certain motorsports. Look at least year's IndyCar race at California, for example. Some of you may remember that epic rant (and well said rant) Robin Miller made in regards to that race in it trying to compete with the NASCAR event at Sonoma Raceway on the same weekend. I do feel the most bit shaky on the whole FOX Sports 1/2 deal and how they'll be televising this race. The race will still go on and still be great, but the whole television package is the only variable.
Now on to the notion of commentary. The coverage will stink without the likes of Bob Varsha. I've even told Bob himself on social media- if I ever become a motorsports journalist, he's my main inspiration. Heck, as much as I like Leigh Diffey, F1 coverage isn't the same without Bob Varsha; but that's another story. So I can't really say whether or not I think the coverage from the commentary position is good or bad based on how this whole thing plays out.
