As they said in the press release:


I expect "later this year" to be the Rolex Monterrey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca in August, when BMW's 100th anniversary is celebrated. This is just building hype for whatever big news they have planned for that event.
(Is anyone here going to that? I may road trip down to check it out)

Seeing as the program is run by BMW North America, I'd expect Monterrey over Goodwood. Monterrey also tends to be more open to manufacturers using it as a promotion tool than Goodwood. It could also be revealed at their century celebration in Munich:
The BMW Group will celebrate its rich history and promising future throughout the year officially starting with the Centenary Event in Munich, Germany on March 7th.

It looks like Pumpelly was in the car so I doubt it was driver error.

From looks that picture thats entry to the pits? Guessing he just lost back end off of NASCAR 4, locked wheels and gently into the safer barrier - damage doesn't look too bad.
 
I just looked at the timing sheet...HOLY ****. :odd:

Only 1 P car in the top 5, even at Daytona. That tire really does suck. :crazy:

Yeah it sounds like they were on the installation lap too.
 
I'd say it was just not knowing how the car is, and being in the wet doesn't help with learning the characteristics of the car. Add to that coming off the banking in turn 4 and it's a recipe for a spin.

Those Contis are not so good in the rain. If the 24 ends up being a mostly wet race, I wouldn't be surprised to see a GT car win it.

Dang...I honestly want Conti' to be embarrassed and have their spec tire on the top tier classes upstaged by the Michelin's on the GTLM's.
 
Well, at the moment the picture was taken, the car was still in one piece, so nothing? :sly:
 
GTLM have more power than last year as well :D
 
IMSA should allow GTLM to fight for the top by cutting power on the P cars. #GTmasterrace :p

Ozz Negri and the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ligier JS P2-Honda maintained the team's impressive pace from the Roar Before the 24 test to lead Free Practice 1 at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Drivers were greeted with a wet track but dry, overcast skies for the 60-minute session, Negri's fastest lap (1:54.807) was nearly 15 seconds shy of the best turned at the Roar.

Second overall went the brand-new No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTLM (1:55.078) (above). Toni Vilander and his Michelin tires led the session until the MSR P2 moved ahead, and third overall went to another GTLM car, the No. 912 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR (1:55.267) piloted by Fred Makowiecki.

Ryan Lewis led the PC contingent (2:00.221) in the No. 26 BAR1 ORECA FLM09-Chevy, and Matt McMurry topped GTD in his No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R (2:02.249).

A red flag was required with five minutes remaining in the session after Spencer Pumpelly crashed the No. 16 Change Racing Lamborghini Huracán GT3 exiting NASCAR Turn 4. Pumpelly was evaluated and released from the infield care center.

Kinda misleading when it says "maintained the team's impressive pace". There's nothing impressive about being 2 tenths of a second faster than a GTE car at Daytona in the wet. Continental tire is hilariously outclassed in anything but bone dry conditions. But that's what you get with a (this) control tire. PLM last year showed exactly that.

It's in reference to the pace of the rest of the P class.
 
Continental didn't even get their new wet weather tires out until this week. I had seen some things on twitter were there was worry over whether or not Conti actually had their wet weather tires ready.

That's even worse...how did they ever get a contract with IMSA?
 
Their wets are still the old spec, new tires wont debut until Sebring.

Of course... :banghead: Oh well, at least for GT fans (myself included) this means the chance for overall victory is going to be around for a while.
