2017 F1 Constructor technical info/developmentFormula 1

Why are people saying the W08 is boring? some really intriguing stuff hidden there, liking the new livery as well.

It is intriguing the livery is so plain and well done in that manner that it hides how extreme the car is. I feel the new touches to the green Petronas colors on the side pod, were to confuse people viewing the car. Thus you see a simple and boring car based on livery, it isn't until you spend thirty minutes analyzing it that you realize, the car is beyond those seen so far.

So it's full name is Mercedes-AMG W08 EQ Power+. That sounds like a something you'd buy to unblock your drains.

Yeah it does sound like colon medicine, with daily vitamins and minerals to help you. Just be glad there isn't the Petronas in the title like previous years, then we'd be getting to some ground breaking lengths in naming a car.

What I don't get is why teams don't copy that nose style. Obviously it's better functionally and aesthetically. Do they really just not want to have the exact same thing so they have to be different?

Maybe somebody's hoping to have something better. If more people copied Red Bull's or Mercedes' nose the grid would be much prettier.

No, the thing is Mercedes have found for a few years now a way to design this nose and pass crash tests, others have claimed to try and not be able to. Then you have other teams that like the fork/thumb/Pinocchio style nose, because it is a smaller cross section but still adhering to the rules as far as how long the nose needs to be when viewed from the size. With a smaller cross section there is more opening for air flow under the nose (think of the new force india VJ10). This allows better flow, which teams lost greatly when the higher nose of 2012/13 were no longer allowed after.

Here is a visual of what they're trying to achieve but more so with the ugly noses most of you hate.

The flow from the back of the wing to the start of the plank where you see that anvil like shape is what is trying to be maximized so the rest of the flow around the car is tidy.

Redbull has the same nose that many are complaining about...RBR has the same Sauber/Williams nose.

Because it makes the car look like a mess. There is a way to do them right, and Red Bull are an example of that (like the only 2014 car to be worth looking at). The blunt way most teams do them is tragic. *coughWilliams/Force Indiacough*

Not really seeing your point here...

If anything RBR are the reason more teams opt for this type of nose than the Mercedes one.
Yes you can, they de-highlighted by making it black. :P It does look better, as the way its shaped at least makes it slightly less pointless looking like the other designs.

Did you read it, they said it was unfortunate because it was the best solution to exploiting an area of the car that prior was restricted to such. Thus in their eyes it is the best solution to get the maximum out of the rules for this year. What's unfortunate is that to do so they had to sacrifice looks which they would have probably like to have themselves as well.

As for Mercedes in general, I now see why Lewis called the car a boat, it's long and it almost reminds me of how the 2010 Saubers looked like high speed trains when first introduced. I think the lack of a real color scheme does it no favors in looking like a long piece of kit. It's not bad as I said, but considering it's much of what we've seen and then long as well...it gets boring even if it looks nice.

Sure you have.

Nice and "simple".

My first impression when I saw the W08:

I seriously don't get why some people are saying the Mercedes looks boring or crude. If you look at the details on this car, it's clearly on another level to the other cars we've seen so far. I really dislike the enormous length of it, but even with my basic understanding of aerodynamics, I can see why they've gone for the extra length. The really interesting bits are around the bargeboard area in this launch spec, but I'm really interested to see what they do with the front and rear wings once we get into testing, as clearly these launch spec ones are just modified 2016 designs.

I quite like the new Merc. I'm not a huge fan of the side pods, but most of the rest of the car has nice lines. I actually really like the new version of the livery, with the stripes. It's subtle, but adds a certain "pop" to the look.

I have to say, on all the cars, I'm not really liking how wide the front wing is. I think it looks out of proportion compared to the rear wing, and it makes the front tires look small.

25 pics of the new Merc, with some nice close up detail shots. Some of the aero treatment on this car is really stunning.

That snake thing coming out the sides of the nose, the extra winglets by the mirrors. The fact that the engine air hole is angled forward... So many little things.

Yeah the horns on the side are interesting let's hope things don't get too crazy with development...

We don't know this type of stuff or the Y/X wings

Yikes, did that even work? It definitely didn't help visibility. The T-wing (what I'm calling it) on the new Merc looks so flimsly, like it'll sway a helluva lot.

"Suffering from a fiery blow-out? Don't be like me - treat your system daily with Mercedes' all new F1 W08 EQ Power+! It's gentle on your colon and your crankshaft. I'm Lewis Hamilton and I'm wondering why the hell I agreed to do this advert, but I'm starting to appreciate why Nico retired. Also, there were two glasses of the stuff here. One for me and one for the car. Are you guys sure I drank the right one? Guys? Guys? What do you mean I wasn't supposed to swallow it? Should I be tasting purple right now? Guys ... ?"

Carbon fiber is a magical thing

A great way to end that advert is an image of Roscoe drinking the other cup

So, Ferrari are launching their car a mere 2 hours before McLaren. Seeing as the two leading motorsport news websites (autosport and motorsport) ate both owned by the McLaren boss, we all know which of those two launches is going to be the main article. Ferrari have done a great job of scheduling, just as we're used to...

I don't think Ferrari will care too much. They're doing it more for the benefit of the Italian media. Anybody else who shows up is welcome, but if they don't, Ferrari won't bat so much as an eyelid.

I dunno, I think Ferrari's image won't be too good if its launch has much less coverage than that of, say, Sauber.

But I think you hit the nail on the head - don't care. This is something Ferrari should care about, as their brand is global, but the past few years have been a managerial joke pretty much, and this is another case of incompetence coming from Maranello.

Ferrari launches at 8:45am GMT (6:45pm AEST)
Wow, that's awfully considerate of them. But then again, I suppose they have to dash to Jerez afterwards. But I don't mind - I have sushi, iced coffee and two car launches. I'm a happy man.
