I don't think the Cit€h goal should have stood, as although it has been explained that it was a 'legal' goal, the player was only in a position to get the ball because he was in an offside position the second before Mings (mis)kicked the ball.
If they just simplified the offside rules to where they were years ago, if you are beyond the last opposition player (minus the keeper) when a pass is played forward by the opposition, you were offside. No debates about 'interfering' with play or anything else. In the situation tonight, as soon as the ball went forward the player was so obviously offside that the flag could have went up, no need to get VAR involved.
I very much doubt they would go back to a simpler system, but this could, with a more cynical manager/team/player, lead to a very sneaky tactic of deliberately having someone offside, the flag not going up, and the player offside quickly closing down the player with the ball who will continue the game to try and hurry them into a panicked move as they are about to touch the ball, similar to Mings, though I think that was just poor control rather than being rushed, and as long as they got to the player fractionally after he kicks the ball, it would be seen as a 'new phase of play'.
Hopefully this is just a one off, but I would not have been happy if that happened to my team, legal or not.
A lot of the commentators and media I have seen were against it, but just seem to shrug the shoulders and, "it was legal" with a 'nothing you can do about it' attitude.
I thought both games were pretty good, with all the teams trying to win, and not much between them.
I think I have cursed Fernandes by putting him into my Fantasy Football team btw, (you're welcome Utd fans
) as he is not playing well as before. No doubt he will have a blinder on Sunday, because it is not in the league, and of no benefit to my FF team.
