Looks quite funky! Silhouette reminds me of the Mazda 2 with a hint of Peugeot 208 in the rear light bar. Standard models come with 1.5 Hybrid powertrain. Expect GR Sport and a high performance GR variant as these models have been spotted testing on the Ring.

Yes. The Mazda 2 rear hatch area. It's like a 2 with rear over-fenders.

I like this front clip better than the out-going model. Like the rear lights as well.

Overall, a decent package. Still can't see how it sells well with that small cargo area(seats up). Sure, pay a bit more and buy a Corolla.

Digital instruments and a HUD!

That awkward moment when you ordered the current-gen Yaris GR SPORT and they show you the next one. X)

No thanks, Toyota. I'll probably wait for the new Honda Fit that will be unveiled in the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

The GR Yaris has been spied and it is looking dummy thicc

Should be all wheel drive too. The level of want is strong with this one!
The Euro version will probably have a different front. The design on the photo is typical to Japanese models.

I was liking this car until I saw the interior, My Mazda 2 has been out awhile now but it still looks the most mature in this class.
But if the Yaris GR is to be believed, that is very tempting.

Many more details on the car here.

Drove a prototype last week and spoke to a bunch of the engineers but couldn't mention anything here as it was embargoed until today!

Super excited by it though. The drive wasn't informative enough to get a complete impression of the car, and it's not quite finished anyway, but there's a hell of a lot to like about the engineering behind it.

First in-house Toyota sports car project since the last-gen MR2 and Celica, so all the engineers are really excited to be working on it too.

This is shaping up to be a Celica GT-Four for the modern age and I am so on board with it.

Given how many bespoke parts it has, I can't imagine affordable being one of the words to describe the GR Yaris. The most expensive B-Segment hot hatch on sale right now is the Mini Cooper S JCW GP at £35k so I'm expecting it to be somewhere in that range.

I think that's a realistic ballpark. Given its output and technology, it'll likely be more in the C-segment range (Megane, Golf etc) than B-segment.

For some trivia, I've just grabbed a 1996 copy of Autocar. A Celica GT-Four was £31,289 in 1996, which is over £57,000 today. So the Yaris is at least likely to be better value than that...

lol none of the EU or NA news outlets have broke the news yet

Learning from competing in the WRC, Toyota developed the GR Yaris together with Tommi Mäkinen Racing from the ground up to be a WRC winner, as an original model of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's sports car lineup.

The GR Yaris employs a sports 4WD platform based on the TNGA approach. Taking feedback from real WRC experiences, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing built the GR Yaris from scratch to achieve a high-rigidity body of highly refined balance while also optimizing front and rear suspension geometry. By combining its platform with the "GR-FOUR" sports 4WD system, efforts were made to achieve a high level of dynamic performance. Furthermore, the upper body, in addition to using aluminum for the hood, trunk lid, and door panels, features a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic roof panel formed using the sheet molding compound method, which accommodates a high level of freedom in shape design. The firm three-door-type cabin points to excellent aerodynamic performance, while light weight is still achieved.

Among the GR Yaris' available engine variations, the 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine is a newly developed compact and light high-power unit. In addition to the high-speed combustion of a TNGA engine, by increasing engine revolutions through the use of lightweight moving parts, and by optimizing the turbocharger and other elements of the air intake and exhaust system, efforts were made to achieve the world's highest maximum output for a three-cylinder engine of 200 kW (272 PS), as well as to achieve continuous provision of abundant torque over a wide range of engine speeds. Combined with a six-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission), which makes rhythmical gear changes possible, this engine provides overwhelming acceleration and allows users to experience an increase in engine revolutions that feels good.

Furthermore, the newly developed "GR-FOUR" sports 4WD system, which uses a front and rear variable driving force system enabled by a multi-plate clutch, transfers the power of the new engine to all four wheels with minimal loss. Freedom of driving force distribution between the front and rear wheels has been increased, making possible delicate control that matches road surface conditions. These advancements have resulted in a higher level of stand-out driving stability.

Not even the first month of the year has passed and the GR4 looks like a strong for my favourite car of the year. There is something so bespoke and appealing about that compressed rear end.

I hope used prices on these drops fairly quickly, I'll never be able to afford a brand new one but it will be slightly used by the time I'll be in the market for a new car. It needs to be lowered though.

This is what Ford should have done with the First-gen Focus. I was so close to buying one due to their presence in WRC. The USA missed out on the Escort Cosworth. An AWD Focus RS would have been the right move back then.

Ford has also missed an opportunity to do the same with the Fiesta RS. Glad Toyota has made this.

Small displacement 3-cylinder engines are also becoming common nowadays.

Speaking of which, the G16E-GTS in the GR4 has now taken the crown from the BMW i8 to achieve the highest power output from a 3-cylinder ICE in a road car, if I'm not mistaken.
