I don't have the answer but believe I read that the cars you have purchased can be sold. Some of the special cars can not be sold though. Like the Anniversary cars.

Maybe they have to be in the garage to sell and not the stockyard?

You have 42 carts? Woooow lol. Well what I do is transfer from the stockyard and and just sell from my garage. As stated above you cant sell the Anni cars.
